NEW DISCOVERIES FROM THE PAST
Few discoveries are as dramatic as finding the Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic or Machu
Picchu in the mountains of Peru. But that does not mean that studying history and cultural relics is boring or slow. In fact, exciting new discoveries from the past are made every year. Read the news reports below to learn more about a few recent finds.Relics from Ancient Greek Ship Rescued
Athens, 8 October 2014. Relics on a Greek ship that sank more than 2,000 years ago have been
rescued by an international team of archaeologists and divers. Several artefacts, including a large bronze spear, were found. The ship, which rests 55 metres below the surface, was first discovered in 1900 by local divers. Because the water is so deep, it has been very difficult to examine the
ship. Earlier this year, scientists were able to use a robot to photograph and make a map of the
wreck. The cultural relics which were then rescued by the international team are among the most important to date and will help answer some of the questions about the history of the ship. “A lot of work has to be done at this site to uncover its secrets,” said the leader of the team.Han Dynasty Treasures to Visit the Capital
Beijing, 25 February 2016. Beijing’s Capital Museum will host some 400 rare cultural
relics from the Han Dynasty that have been found in Jiangxi Province during the last five years.
The relics were chosen from more than 20,000 pieces and include objects made of gold and other metals. Visitors will have a chance to see beautiful works of art as well as pottery and horse
chariots. The relics were found in the tomb of Haihunhou, where experts have been digging since 2011. According to one of the experts, the find is very unusual, and special measures will be taken to safeguard the objects: “We will make sure they are not damaged.” The exhibition will open in March and last for three months.

Jaden Anthony, a boy from Brooklyn, New York, was born with a disease called diabetes (糖尿病), a condition that often leaves him feeling thirsty. Deeply aware of the importance of clean water, he became concerned when he learned of the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.
In 2014, the city began using water that contained dangerous levels of lead (铅), which is harmful to all, especially children. Even small amounts could cause diseases and affect learning abilities. Therefore, Jaden wanted to do something to help the kids in Flint.
Being a comic book fan, Jaden decided to create his own to raise awareness about clean water and donate funds. “Kid Brooklyn,” he explained in an interview, “aims to make both kids and adults recognize global dangers.”
In the first book of a series, the main character Kid Brooklyn and his friends are given an
unusual Sun Stone that helps them develop super powers. They use those powers to keep the
planet clean and safe. Jaden works with illustrators to bring the characters and stories to life. Jaden was twelve years old when his first book was published in October 2017. A dollar from every
book Jaden sells is donated to Green for All, an organization to bring clean, fresh water to the families in Flint.
Future issues of the comic will promote different environmental causes. Jaden wants to
encourage children all over the world to become scientists and engineers who can fix the problems caused by climate change. He also has a message for the kids of the world who don’t have the
same access to clean water as he has. “Don’t get sad. Don’t lose any hope. We got you.”

If you’re reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh — ohs. The 21st
century. That would make you young, creative, connected, global, and no doubt smart. Maybe good — looking, too. Right But what do other people think about your generation
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face — down generation” because you use your phone so much and they wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies to become successful in real life — or “IRL”, as you would
say
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoilt (宠坏的) and don’t want to face the
challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter
parents” who were always there to guide and help them with a busy schedule filled with
homework and extra — curricular activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today’s youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face — down generation need a heads — up Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be enthusiastic (热情的) and willing to become leaders. More young people than ever
volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you’re one of the oh — ohs, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face — down generation. Chances are that you will do GR8 (great) and LOL (laugh out loud).
8 .According to the passage, what is a common concern among some adults about the “face — down generation”
A .They lack creativity and intelligence.
B .They are too focused on their phones rather than the real world.
C .They have no interest in extra — curricular activities.
D .They are unwilling to use modern technology.
9 .The underlined phrase “helicopter parents” in Paragraph 3 most probably means parents who
.
_________
A .work as a helicopter pilot B .often travel around by helicopter
C .are overly involved in their child’s life D .encourage their child to be independent
10 .What can we infer about the writer’s attitude towards the younger generation
A .Worried and critical. B .Hopeful and positive.
C .Indifferent and neutral. D .Doubtful but curious.
11 .Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A .The Rise of Helicopter Parents
B .Challenges Facing Today’s Youth
C .The Face — Down Generation: A Reason to Be Hopeful
D .How to Deal with Teenagers’ Phone Addiction
D
Throughout history, trees have played a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance.
They absorb CO2 and transform it into oxygen. But one of the challenges with this traditional
carbon absorption is that the CO2 trees store can be released back into the atmosphere when they die.
However, the discovery of certain trees in Kenya adds a new dimension to this natural
process. These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO2 into calcium oxalate. Then bacteria present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), a primary component of limestone and chalk. The unique
process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends. This finding was emphasized by Mike Rowley from the University of Zurich at the Goldschmidt Conference.
While the scientific community is optimistic about these findings, several challenges
remain. The primary concern is determining the exact amount of CO2 that these trees can
transform throughout their lifetime. Without this accurate data, it is challenging to assess the full
impact of this method globally. Understanding the ecological balance and ensuring the
preservation of biodiversity are crucial before worldwide planting of these trees. Cooperative research efforts are needed to explore these aspects and develop a comprehensive strategy for using these trees as a natural solution to climate change.
This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the potential of natural processes in
addressing environmental challenges. While technological solutions to climate change are vital, integrating natural methods offers an alternative approach. The unique ability of these trees
presents a promising method for exploration.
The journey to fighting climate change is complex. As we dig deeper into understanding natural phenomena like the Kenyan trees, we must ask ourselves: How can we make the best of the power of nature to create a sustainable future for generations to come
12 .What is special about the trees found in Kenya
A .They help turn CO2 into solids. B .They can absorb more CO2.
C .They can release oxygen quickly. D .They live in harmony with bacteria.
13 .Why is the accurate data on CO2 transformation of the trees important
A .To grow more trees in Kenya quickly.
B .To carry out more cooperative researches.
C .To keep the ecological balance and increase biodiversity.
D .To evaluate the global impact of the CO2 transformation.
14 .What does the author try to explore in the last two paragraphs
A .The method of green development. B .The role of nature in climate solutions.
C .The prospect of scientific approaches. D .The seriousness of global climate change.
15 .What does the passage tell us
A .Kenyan trees are a natural carbon lock.
B .A defensive strategy in nature is found.
C .Tree planting is a key to ecological balance.
D .A recent advance in CO2 research is achieved.

Milo was a third-grade student. One morning, with the school bell due to ring in just
minutes, he was running desperately through the grocery store parking lot. His teacher Mrs. Grant
had warned him the day before that if he was late one more time, she would call his parents.
Halfway across the lot, Milo froze. Sun beat down on a silver car. Inside the car, a little boy was tied in a seat. His small hands waved weakly. His face was red, and his cheeks had lines of
tears. The window was closed tight. Sweat shone on the boy’s head. Milo was terrified, but when he looked around, there was no one else. Milo’s stomach turned. Heat could kill faster than
anyone imagined. He dropped his backpack, ran to the car, and desperately pulled at every handle — all locked. He hit the window again and again in panic, but the parking lot was still empty. No one came.
Milo looked around wildly, and then he remembered the security guard’s booth (小隔间) near the store entrance. Without another thought, Milo took off running, shouting as he went, He burst into the small booth, breathless, and poured out his story to the surprised guard.
Within minutes, the guard was on the radio, and a store manager came rushing out with a
special tool to unlock the door of the car. As the door opened, a blast of hot air escaped. The boy’s cries, now loud and clear, filled the quiet lot. Milo watched, his own fear fading, as the manager
gently lifted the sweating boy and held him close.
A few minutes later, a young woman came hurrying out of the store, her arms full of bags. Her face went pale when she saw the crowd around her car. She dropped the bags and ran forward, tears springing to her eyes as the manager placed her son safely in her arms. She had only run in
for medicine quickly, she explained, her voice trembling with regret. She never meant to be more than a minute.

challenging to assess the full impact of this method globally.(人们最关心的是确定这类树木在其生命周期内可转化的二氧化碳精确量。
This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the
potential of natural processes in addressing environmental challenges.
As we dig deeper into understanding natural phenomena like the Kenyan trees, we must ask ourselves: How can we
make the best ofthe power of nature to create a sustainable future for generations to come (当我
However, the discovery of certain trees in Kenya adds a new dimension to this natural process. These trees, also found in several other countries, have been
observed to transform CO2 into calcium oxalate. Then bacteria present in the trees and
surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), a primary component of
limestone and chalk. The unique process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much
longer, even after the tree’s life ends.(然而,在肯尼亚发现的一类特殊树木,为这一自然过程增添了新维度。
A“Kenyan trees are a natural carbon lock(肯尼亚树木是天然的碳锁。)” 故选 A。

When Milo rushed to his classroom, he was fifteen minutes late. Mrs. Grant was very angry and stared at Milo. Her face was serious. She reminded him of her warning about not being late again. She said this time, she had to follow the rule. She told Milo that he must bring one of his parents to school the next day to meet with her. She wrote a note for him to take home and give to his parents. Milo took the note, feeling very worried about what his parents would say.
At break, the young mother came to the classroom together with Mrs. Grant. She was
holding her son, who was now safe and calm. The mother explained to the whole class what Milo had done to save her son from the hot car this morning. She called Milo a little hero and gave him a big hug. Mrs. Grant walked to Milo’s desk and took back the note. She told Milo he didn’t need to bring his parents anymore because he had done something very brave and right. The whole class clapped for Milo.
