Summer presents a collection of festivals that combine fun, charity, and awareness. Here are four special celebrations happening in June:
National Go Barefoot Day (June 1)
Established after the 2004 tsunami, this day promotes barefoot walking for health benefits like stronger muscles while supporting Soles4Souls, a non-profit that has provided 19 million shoes globally. You can join barefoot activities or organize shoe collections. By simply taking off your shoes, you can improve your own health while helping children get the shoes they need.
World Oceans Day (June 8)
Oceans cover 66% of Earth and provide 50% of our oxygen, yet 8 million tons of plastic waste pollute them yearly. This day honors the ocean’s irreplaceable roles while inspiring worldwide participation. People can get involved by cleaning beaches, reducing single-use plastics, and watching educational films — turning awareness into action for a healthier planet.
Be a Kid Again Day (June 12)
This lighthearted day encourages adults to relive childhood joys — whether sliding down playground slides, building sandcastles, or rewatching classic kids’ movies. Beyond personal enjoyment, the celebration also supports meaningful causes like A Kid Again, a US non-profit organization that provides fun-filled adventures for children with life-threatening illnesses.
Helen Keller Day (June 27)
Held every year on June 27, this day honors Helen Keller (1880-1968) who became the first person with her disabilities to earn a college degree and wrote 12 books. While celebrating her amazing life, the day also recognizes all those who support the blind and deaf community through events like charity fashion shows and public readings of Keller’s inspirational works.

We find the owl at the very edge of our woods the morning after the storm. Wings flight-frozen and round eyes glassy. I touch its feathers lightly with my fingertip and I’m surprised because they still feel real even though the owl has slipped away somewhere else and Dad is already digging a hole for it in the rain-soaked earth.
I lift its body and it’s huge in my hands but the hollow bones do most of the work for me and I almost think the owl might shake the stiffness from its feathers and fly away. I really don’t think this one should go into a hole in the ground. I say that to Dad and he says that it’s the circle of life and that now the owl will become part of nature again. Feeding the soil with its flesh and growing the roots of plants from its feathers.
Dad shifts the last of the dirt with his spade and sits down at the base of a tree with a huff of air that smokes around him. I put the bird in the hole and mark it with a smooth pebble (鹅卵石) so I’ll always know.
After we’ve buried the owl, we walk all around the woods and clear the worst of the damage from the winds and the rain. The damage isn’t as bad as it’s been before and it feels like the storm has cleaned everything back to being new and fresh. I use my hawk eyes and search the ground in flicks and sweeps and I find treasures in the rain-raked earth just like always. Pieces of pottery and something that could be a Roman coin. I slip them into my pocket and they bump against each other to tell their stories to me, but I’ll listen later.
I help Dad load the best of the fallen branches on to the trailer so we can cut them for fire wood or maybe a bonfire, and then we drive over the muddy paths and back to our house.
4.What do we know about the owl when the author finds it
A.It is already dead. B.It is hidden in a hole.
C.It is to stiff to fly away. D.It is trying to flee the woods.
5.Why does the author mark the hole with a pebble
A.To make future visits convenient. B.To show sympathy for the owl.
C.To keep the site clear of plants. D.To draw the attention of passers-by.
6.What message does the author want to convey by mentioning the owl
A.Storms make trees take deeper roots. B.In nature’s embrace, time stands still.
C.The darkest hour has only sixty minutes. D.With every leaf’s fall, a new life rises.
7.What does “I’ll listen later” in paragraph 4 reveal about the author
A.Money-driven. B.Wonder-seeking.
C.Artistically talented. D.Emotionally sound.
It is no surprise that the English language contains such a wide variety of expressions and phrases including dogs, which have been constant partners with people for thousands of years. The observations of dog behaviors have inspired us to take their individual characteristics into our language.
Did your roommates make a terrible mess of the dorm room while you were gone You could describe this terrible state as “a dog’s breakfast”. This British phrase means a disorganized state of things or a bad mix of different things. It appeared during a time when people would feed their dogs leftovers from last night’s dinner or other food items they happened to have on hand for breakfast. The phrase creates such a powerful scene showing a complete mess if you truly picture it. Interestingly, the phrase “dressed like a dog’s dinner” is quite different — “someone who is overdressed or improperly dressed”.
You would be “barking up the wrong tree” if you are following a mistaken or misguided thought or action. This term dates back to the hunt of raccoon (浣熊) with the help of dogs. From time to time, a raccoon fools the dogs, which crowd around a tree, barking loudly, not realizing the quarry has taken a different way.
Many people even describe the weather by using the image of dogs. The “dog days”, dating back to ancient Rome, refers to the hottest days of the year in which we feel lazy or unable to make great efforts. It was the Romans who first noticed that the burning heat of the summer seemed to come with the appearance of Sirius, the so-called “dog star”, which was a part of the Canis Major (“big dog”) constellation (星座). But even the coldest nights have interesting idioms (习惯用语) and history with them. One Australian idiom describes the practice of sleeping alongside a dog for warmth during cold evenings — a very cold night might need more than one dog, so it is a “three-dog night”.
While dog-related idioms are common in use in many people’s everyday language today, the stories and history behind the idioms may lead us onto a new exciting journey of exploration.
8.Why are there a large number of dog-related idioms in English
A.People summarized the ways dogs cooperate with humans.
B.People’s constant observation of dogs inspired the idioms.
C.Dogs are animals with special features favored by humans.
D.Dogs’ characteristics are the main source of English idioms.
9.Which of the following may be described as “a dog’s breakfast”
A.A delicious meal. B.A messy kitchen.
C.An unsatisfactory ending. D.An improperly-dressed person.
10.What does the underlined word “quarry” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.The raccoon. B.The tree. C.The hunter. D.The master.
11.What was the origin of the idiom “dog days”
A.Dogs liked to hang out in summer.
B.The heat in summer got dogs barking.
C.Dogs were Romans’ favourite animal partners.
D.A star with “dog” in its name appeared at this time.
Sargassum is a kind of floating seaweed (海草) that has been growing in size every year. It looks pretty in the ocean. However, sargassum can almost completely block out sunlight. Important kinds of seagrass suffer when light is blocked by seaweed. As sargassum piles up on beaches, it makes it hard for mother sea turtles to lay eggs, and nearly impossible for baby turtles to return to the sea.
So much sargassum piles up on beaches, and it breaks down slowly, giving out a bad smell like rotten eggs. “Even when governments clear the seaweed from beaches, they face problems of getting rid of it. Heavy machines can put turtle nests in danger. Some people have thought about using sargassum as a fertilizer (肥料), but it contains harmful heavy metals. So far, removing these harmful metal s costs too much to make it worth doing,” said the scientist Steven Kelley.
Sargassum grows faster in warming oceans, so climate change is definitely part of the problem. But scientists believe the unusual growth of the seawood is also caused by huge quantities of fertilizers washed into the ocean from farmlands.
Scientists and students are working hard to figure out how to deal with sargassum. Some suggest using sargassum as a building material, or possibly a fuel. One unusual solution is to drop it deep in the sea by using robots. Sargassum takes in huge amounts of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) as it grows. Removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is one important part of fighting the climate crisis. Sargassum could deal with this carbon dioxide in the deep ocean. Scientists are still testing this idea to see if it will work.
For now, scientists say the quickest solution is to stop filling the ocean with fertilizers. It is wise for farmers to change the way they farm. Moreover, the seaweed’s growth can have serious effects on islands that depend heavily on tourism and fishing. Island communities play a role in cleaning up the seaweed and promoting responsible tourism. At the same time, officials have to work towards changing policies to solve the issues.
12.What can we know about sargassum according to the first paragraph
A.It affects the ecosystem negatively.
B.It adds to the variety of life in the ocean.
C.It causes a shortage of food for sea animals.
D.It creates a good living environment for seagrass.
13.What does Steven Kelley mean in Paragraph 2
A.Reusing metal s from sargassum is a wise choice.
B.Fertilizers can help sargarrum break down quickly.
C.Dealing with sargassum safely is challenging work.
D.Practical ways have been developed to remove sargassum.
14.How can the unusual solution mentioned in Paragraph 4 do good to the environment
A.By spreading sargassum widely to increase sunlight.
B.By changing sargassum into a renewable energy source.
C.By employing sargassum as a cleaner for ocean pollution.
D.By making use of sargassum’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide.
15.What is the text mainly about
A.Public attempts to recycle seaside sargassum.
B.The change in sargassum’s living environment.
C.Challenges and approaches concerning sargassum.
D.The influence of sargassum’s growth on climate change.

It was a cold, snowy evening. Tommy was running as fast as he could, focused on nothing but his destination----the shop on the street corner. Two weeks ago he saw figurines(小塑像) of Marvel superheroes on the shelves and felt he had to have one. He’s been walking the neighbor’s dog ever since then to earn money to fulfil his little dream. He was so excited and barely noticing the world around him. Maybe that’s why he tripped over the legs of a homeless woman, who was sitting on the pavement, her back against the wall. He murmured(低语) "sorry" and moved on to his destination.
Once he entered the shop, he went straight to the shelves with figurines. Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and many more----all of his admired heroes. With his heart pounding like crazy he reached for Spiderman.
“You like these, true believer ”
Tommy turned around. An old man was standing behind him with a wide smile on his face.
“Y-yes, …Yes, they’re awesome!” answered Tommy. “They’re strong and fast and help other people a lot ...”the boy looked at figurines in admiration. “I wish I could be a superhero too.”
“Then become one!” said the old man.
“How ” Tommy asked in surprise. “I don’t have any superpowers.”
“And why would you need them ” the old man smiled. Seeing the confusion on the boy's face, he squatted(蹲下) and put his hands on Tommy's arms. “Did you know that shopkeeper lady over there has a disabled husband She’s been working hard and taking care of him for years. I’ve never heard a word of complaint from her. And this person ---” he pointed at a redhead man, who just entered the shop. “He’s a firefighter; he’s saved countless lives. He never gives up, no matter how dangerous the situation seems to be.”
The old man looked Tommy in the eyes and smiled. “You don’t need a superpower to be a hero for someone else. The path of a superhero starts not in the mind, not in the muscles, but in the heart.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Tommy lowered his head and looked at his shoes thinking intensely.

Dear Chris,
I’m thrilled to hear about your upcoming winter trip to Hangzhou! For your first visit, I highly recommend a self-organized tour though package tours offer convenience.
Hangzhou is a city with excellent public transport, including metro and bike-sharing systems, making it easy to explore independently. Key attractions like West Lake and Hefang Street are well-connected, so you can linger at places you love at your own pace — whether it’s sipping tea by the lake or strolling through ancient streets — without the rush of a package tour. With your adventurous spirit, a DIY approach will allow you to fully immerse yourself in the city’s beauty.
I’d be happy to help you plan a detailed route. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Yours,
Li Hua

Tommy lowered his head and looked at his shoes thinking intensely. Finally he raised his head. "So I am supposed to...” he stopped mid-sentence when he realized that he was alone. He turned his head left and right, but the old man was nowhere to be seen. His eyes lit up---- he already had an idea of what he should do. He looked at figurines for the last time and moved towards the counter. "Two sandwiches and a cup of tea please, "he said, and then returned, food in hand.
The homeless woman was right there, where he saw her last time. Tommy came closer and carefully gave the woman his buys. Her eyes opened wide in surprise, then filled with tears. “Thank you," she whispered. Tommy bowed his head, turned around and went back home. He was moving faster and faster and finally he started to run. Strange energy filling his body made him feel like he could fly. When he finally stopped, he was breathing heavily, but he didn’t feel tired. He smiled happily --- it was a wonderful feeling. And nothing could stop it.
