help you too much, at least while doing these things you won't have time to think of your
problems. You win anyway!
To start with, you can spend time with people and think about good things. It's very hard,
because usually when we feel sad we lock ourselves at home and try to think about all the bad 38

Meeting a positive (积极的) person should be very 41 ______. Just try to keep your problem
off the conversation. The idea here is to get out of your shell and talk to people. Get involved with
someone else and your mind will take a turn as well.
If you have too much time—volunteer it. We usually think that the problems we have are huge,
although if you'll try to go to hospital, you'll see that there are a lot of people who have more 42
______ problems. Moreover, you'll see that people are still working, smiling, and laughing. This
kind of work will help you understand that your problems are not worth 43 ______.

A service of love
Delia was a young pianist with a kind heart. Her husband Joe was a hardworking painter.
They lived in a small apartment in New York. Both were taking expensive lessons—Delia with a
famous German pianist, and Joe with a well-known art teacher. They didn't have much money, but
they believed that when you love art, no cost is too high.
Soon, however, their savings ran out. One afternoon, Delia told Joe she had met a man whose
daughter wanted piano lessons. She would earn $50 an hour teaching the girl. Joe wasn't happy
7
about it. “I'd rather you continued your lessons,” he said. But Delia insisted, “When I've made
some money, I'll start again.” Hearing this, Joe decided to stop his own lessons and try to sell his
paintings instead.
A few days later, Joe came home happily with $200. “A man from Vermont bought one of
my paintings!” he told Delia. Delia became very pleased, and for a while, their money worries
disappeared. They missed their lessons, but life seemed easier.
Then one evening, Joe noticed a bandage on Delia's hand. “What happened ” he asked.
Delia explained, “My student Sally asked for coffee, and I accidentally spilled it. She bought this
bandage for me.” Joe looked into her eyes and asked her to sit down. “Tell me the truth, Delia.
What have you really been doing these two weeks ”
Delia tried to stay calm, but then tears filled her eyes. “I couldn't
find any students, so I took a job as a waitress. Today, I burned my
hand with hot water and lost my job. I'm sorry… But at least we still
have the money from your buyer in Vermont, right ”
Joe held her hand gently. “There is no man from Vermont,” he
admitted.“I didn't sell any paintings. I've been working at a drugstore.
Today, someone came in to buy a bandage for a waitress who burned
her hand. When I saw your bandage, I understood everything.”
For a moment, they were silent. Then they both smiled. “So we
both told lies,” Joe said softly. “But when you love your art…”
Delia touched his lips.“No, Joe,” she whispered.“Just‘when
you love…'”
