My hometown is a small village in the mountains of Fujian Province. It is famous for its tea gardens, and almost every family here grows tea. My grandparents have a tea garden on the hill behind our house, and I spent most of my childhood there.
Tea is the most important part of the life in my village. The tea picking season usually comes in early spring. When the weather gets warm, all the villagers get busy picking tea leaves. They have to get up very early in the morning, when the leaves are still wet with dew(露水). My grandma says that the best tea leaves are picked before the sun comes up.
After picking the tea leaves, people will take them home to process. There are many steps to make good tea, like drying, roasting and rolling. My grandpa is a famous tea maker in the village. He has been making tea for over 40 years, and he knows exactly how to make the best tea. He often teaches me the skills of making tea, and tells me stories about tea.
In recent years, great changes have happened in my village. New roads have been built, so it is easier for people to sell their tea to other cities. Many young people come back to the village to start their own tea business online. They sell tea to people all over China through the Internet, and they also teach others about our tea culture online.
Although the village has changed a lot, the love for tea has never changed. Every time I go back home, I will walk around the tea garden with my grandparents, drink a cup of fresh tea, and enjoy the quiet and beautiful life here. This is my hometown, a place full of the sweet smell of tea.
