Silver Spring, Maryland is a center for immigrants (移民) and refugees. Manuel Vera, now known as the “Bike Dude”, found some unique and creative ways to support his community.
At first, Manuel Vera just wanted to do something productive during the COVID-19 lockdown (封锁). So he offered to fix people’s bikes for free in his neighborhood.
“Then I started thinking about all the bikes people have at home that never get used,” says Vera, 74, who is retired from the local power company. Soon he asked neighbors to donate bikes collecting dust after kids had outgrown them or adults had upgraded to new models. Then, in his tidy little backyard shed, he’d get to work. Since space is so tight, Vera prefers to work alone
though not for lack of volunteers.
Vera repairs the bikes and gives them away at parks with a “Free Bikes” sign. Then he pairs people up with the perfect new ride and watches them pedal away happily. His first giveaway saw six bikes go in under 30 minutes.
But Vera wanted to reach those who needed help the most. Making life better, one bike at a time. In addition to helping the adults and kids he meets at his Free Bikes events, eager customers also come from local resettlement agencies. The agencies provide Vera with the height, gender
and age of a rider, and he delivers a fitting bicycle to their door. He’s happy to make the trip.
Vera recalls that an Afghan man needed a way to get to his new job as a night security guard. Vera provided him with not only a bike and helmet but also lights and a reflective vest. Lbrahim Alashe’s new bike cuts his travel time in half.
“When I sought bicycles, it was very expensive, so when he does this for people, it makes them so happy,” says Alashe. “It was one of my dreams to get a bicycle. So it’s very good.”
So far, his simple offer to repair bikes has grown into an engine of kindness, providing wheels to over 700 people and fueling the entire community.
24 .What did Manuel Vera first offer to do for his neighbors
A .Donate bicycles to refugees. B .Fix their bikes without charge.
C .Collect unused bikes from them. D .Teach bike repair skills online.
25 .Why did Vera choose to help people through resettlement agencies
A .To get more volunteers for his small shed. B .To earn a reputation as a community leader.
C .Because giving bikes in parks was not successful. D .To help people with the greatest needs
more directly.
26 .Which words best describe Manual Vera
A .Strict and serious. B .Kind and thoughtful.
C .Shy and quiet. D .Ambitious and proud.
27 .What does the story mainly tell us
A .How bicycle recycling benefits the environment.
B .How a retired man spent his time during the lockdown.
C .How a small act of kindness can power a community.
D .How immigrants face challenges in Silver Spring, Maryland.

There is a famous story about how Walt Disney was inspired to build Disneyland. The story goes that during an afternoon visit to Griffith Park located near the Burbank Studios, Walt took a seat while his two young daughters rode the merry-go-round. Walt thought there should be a place where both children and their parents could enjoy spending some time together in an environment that would be both entertaining and pleasing to the eye, so with this thought came the idea for
Disneyland.
Walt’s original plan was to build an eight-acre park located near the Burbank Studios that would be a place for his employees and their families. Those plans were put on hold because of the start of World War II. By 1952, Walt had created a special department to build the park.
Finally in 1953, the first steps in building the park happened when Walt hired the Stanford Research Institute to make a survey to determine the best possible location for the future park.
Considering population growth and the future freeway construction, they finally found a location in Anaheim and 160 acres of land were bought for the site of the new park.
The building of the park was very expensive and to create funding for the project Walt
developed the idea of the “Walt Disney’s Disneyland” television show. It turned out to be a
marvelous idea — not only gaining the money to build the park but also presenting the park to the American public.
Construction officially began on July 21, 1954, and it was an ambitious
building schedule of less than one year to complete the new park for the projected opening day.
Walt watched over the park’s construction and progress continued with just a few minor hold-ups. Finally, the park was ready for the Opening Day on July 17, 1955.
28 .What inspired Walt Disney to build Disneyland
A .The special design of Griffith Park.
B .A trip to a park with his daughters.
C .Requests from his family and employees.
D .The idea to build a park for his daughters.
29 .What is mainly considered in choosing the location of Disneyland
A .Walt Disney’s personal preference.
B .The natural environment.
C .The advice of the public.
D .Local traffic.
30 .What does the underlined word “marvelous” in Paragraph 4 mean
A .Funny. B .Wild.
C .Wonderful. D .Imaginative.
31 .What can we learn about the construction process
A .It was smooth generally.
B .It was affected by World War II.
C .It was completed later than expected.
D .It was influenced by a shortage of money.

All good things must come to an end, and the astonishing life of the International Space Station (ISS) is no exception.
First launched in 1998, the ISS is used for a wide array of experiments and has hosted
nearly 300 astronauts from 26 different countries in an impressive display of international
cooperation. However, after a quarter century in action, the ISS is wearing down. Life in orbit has subjected the station to a type of wear-and-tear beyond what any earthly object could handle. Not only that, but in a world where technological advancements are coming at a fast pace, the
technology built into the ISS is becoming outdated.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and its partner agencies debated multiple approaches to decommissioning (终止使用) the ISS. One early idea was to move the ISS to even higher orbit, but that would be very risky because, without consistent maintenance, the
station could break down and leave behind parts that could rain down on Earth, causing serious
destruction. They also considered taking apart the station in space and bringing it home piece by piece, but this process would be too expensive and complex. The only realistic end to the ISS is to bring the whole thing crashing down to Earth at once.
Fortunately, Earth’s atmosphere will help to reduce the danger by incinerating a large part ofthe ISS as it goes downwards. This will happen because the speedy fall from space will create enough friction(摩擦) between the station and the surrounding air to start a fire. However, many parts ofthe ISS will survive this breakup, and those are expected to land in a point in the South Pacific Ocean called Point Nemo, which is considered the most remote location on Earth, a
technological graveyard.
NASA has announced that it will not create the replacement for the ISS. Instead, a new
order is set to be established, in which private companies operate space stations. China’s Tiangong Space Station was launched in 2021, and it seems clear now that the future of space exploration
lies in multiple stations, not one central hub like the ISS.
32 .What is the current situation ofthe ISS
A .It lacks research investment. B .It is nearing the end of its service life.
C .It requires technological updates. D .It is undergoing a cycle of performance tests.
33 .What concerns NASA and its partner agencies about decommissioning the ISS
A .Safety and expense. B .Techniques and policies.
C .Pollution and criticism. D .Responsibilities and risks.
34 .What does the underlined word “incinerating” in paragraph 4 mean
A .Sweeping away. B .Crashing into. C .Cutting off. D .Burning up.
35 .Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A .Where Will the International Space Station Go
B .How Far Can the Tiangong Space Station Reach
C .Is the International Space Station the Final Frontier
D .What Awaits Beyond the International Space Station

How to Feel Better About the Way You Look
If you feel insecure about the way you look, you aren’t alone. 36 They can easily contribute to feelings of insecurity. If you would like to become more confident about your body and looks, there are steps you can take to change how you think about your body.

yourself down a lot. You may engage in negative self-talk, which means you find yourself saying things to yourself like, “I can’t believe how fat you are” throughout the day. Try to replace
negative self talk with positive self talk. 38
Provide your body with nourishment (营养). Many people with low self-esteem (自尊) try dieting or healthy eating as a means to change their bodies. 39 Think of healthy eating as a way of nourishing your body instead of a way of forcing your body to change.
40 If you’re feeling poorly about yourself, support is important. Seek out friends and family members who are positive. Try to spend time with people who feel good about their bodies and are generally positive.
A .Turn to people around you for help.
B .Surround yourself with supportive people.
C .People have things about their bodies they dislike.
D .Eating aims to give you a good mood instead of making you look good.

Sumi is a single mother, whose daughter Anna has always been called “Number 23”. Every time the school published exam results, Anna would always end up in the 23rd position among 50 pupils. Always 23, no matter what topic or term. Every time Sumi heard that moniker (绰号), she became concerned.
Sumi ran a service firm planning small events — outdoor short journeys for staff and their families or weekend parties. The discussion nearly always focused on their children as most of her staff were parents. You know how it goes — one parent discussed their child’s piano honors,
while another boasted (夸耀) about math Olympiads or leadership responsibilities. Sumi would simply sit there, softly nodding, feeling uncomfortable. While others were honoring these great youngsters, all she could think about was Anna and her moniker, Number 23.
One day, Sumi and Anna were invited to a nice get-together. The adults gathered around a big round table, and as the lunch came to an end, someone playfully asked the youngsters what they wanted to be when they grew up. One after another, the children gave their bold, ambitious answers — to be a pianist, to be a famous actor, to start a business and make tons of money. The
adults clapped and praised each one.
Anna didn’t answer. She was more interested in quietly helping out — bringing cups of soup, handing cookies around. She was just in her own little world, gladly helping.
Then the same person who raised the question looked at Anna and added, “Hey, our Anna hasn’t told us yet. What do you want to be when you grow up ” Anna paused (停顿). Then she smiled and said, “I want to be a teacher. I love little kids. I love singing and playing with them.” And suddenly, the whole room just…became quiet. It hit Sumi hard. It was like her heart got
caught in her throat.

merry-go-round. Walt thought there should be a place where both children and their parents could enjoy spending some time together in an environment that would be both entertaining and pleasing to the eye, so with this thought came the idea for Disneyland.(故事是这样的:有一天下午,Walt去了 Burbank Studios 附近的 Griffith Park,他的两个小女儿在坐旋转木马。
Considering population growth and the future freeway
construction, they finally found a location in Anaheim and 160 acres of land were bought for the
site of the new park.(考虑到人口增长和未来的高速公路建设,他们最终在 Anaheim 找到了一个地点,并购买了 160 英亩的土地作为新公园的所在地。)”

根据第一段中的“All good things must come to an end, and the astonishing life of the International Space Station (ISS) is no exception.(天下没有不散的筵席,国际空间站的传奇历程也不例外。)” 以及第二段中的“However, after a quarter century in action, the ISS is
wearing down.(然而,经过二十五年的运行,国际空间站正在老化。)”
One early idea was to move the ISS to even higher orbit, but that would be very risky because, without consistent maintenance, the station could break down
and leave behind parts that could rain down on Earth, causing serious destruction. They also
considered taking apart the station in space and bringing it home piece by piece, but this process
would be too expensive and complex.(一个早期的想法是将国际空间站移至更高的轨道,但这会非常危险,因为如果没有持续的维护,空间站可能会损坏,其部件可能会坠落到地球上,造成严重破坏。 故选 A 项。
根据第四段中的“Fortunately, Earth’s atmosphere will help to reduce the danger by incinerating a large part ofthe ISS as it goes downwards. This will happen because the speedy fall from space will create enough friction between the station and the surrounding air to start a
通读全文,根据第一段中的“All good things must come to an end, and the astonishing life of the International Space Station (ISS) is no exception.(天下没有不散的筵席,国际空间站的传奇历程也不例外。)” 故选 A 项。

Knowing that you’re preparing for a “China Travel” video series, I’m writing to recommend Beijing as a suitable filming location to you.
For one thing, Beijing is home to numerous world-renowned historic landmarks like the

another, in Beijing, you can not only sample the local cuisines, but also experience a great variety of cultural activities in person. I believe all the above will definitely enrich the contents of your
video.
I do hope you will find my recommendation beneficial to you. May your video turn out great!
Yours,

The way you helped everyone today made you the brightest kid there.” Anna’s face lit up, and Sumi felt a weight lift from her chest.
Not long after the get-together, Sumi got a phone call from Anna’s teacher. “Mrs. Sumi, I must praise Anna,” the teacher said excitedly. “She spends her break helping classmates who fall behind, especially the little ones. It is her patience and warmth that have made our class much more united. Grades aren’t everything — she’s a natural teacher and a joy to have.” Sumi smiled through tears, finally proud of her “Number 23”.
