When I was young I wanted to be a model, so when a national contest was staged, I
convinced my parents to take me for an audition (试演). I was selected and told I had potential.
They said that for only $900 I could attend a weekend event which dozens ofthe most prestigious (有声望的) modeling agencies from around the world would attend. At 13, my hopes of fame and fortune clouded all judgment and I begged my parents to let me go. We have never been rich, but they saw my enthusiasm and agreed.
I imagined being signed by some famous model companies. For months, any boredom or
disappointment I faced was pushed aside because I knew I would soon have the chance to be a real model. I thought I would grace the covers of famous magazines!
Of course, I wasn’t signed, but what hurt the most was being told that if I grew to 5’9”
(about 1.75 metres) I could be a success. I prayed for a growth spurt (冲刺) because I could not
imagine giving up my dream. I made an appointment with a local modeling agency and the agent demanded $500 for classes, $500 for a photo shoot, and $300 for other expenses. My parents only agreed after hours and hours of me begging.
The agency sent me out on a few auditions, but with every day I didn’t receive a call, I
grew more depressed. The final straw came in July after I had decided to focus on commercial modeling. There was an open call in New York City. We spent hours driving and another few hours waiting, only to be told that I was too short. I was desperate.
Years later, however, I realized that the trip to New York was good as it made me notice I didn’t actually love modeling, just the idea of it. I wanted to be special and I was innocently
determined to reach an impossible goal. The experience has made me stronger and that will help me in the future.
46 .What’s the main reason why the author wanted to be a model

B .She realized that it was impossible for her.
C .Even a local modeling agency turned her down.
D .She realized that she didn’t actually love the idea of modeling.
49 .The underlined phrase “The final straw” probably means .
A .the last in a series of bad things that happen to make someone very upset, angry, etc
B .the final result that she was admitted by the model company
C .the final audition given by the agency
D .the decision that she made at last not to be a model any more
50 .What did the author learn from her experience of struggling to be a model
A .Where there’s a will there’s a way.

For a long time, science and culture held that the human sense of smell was
underdeveloped, especially compared to animals. This belief was started by 19th-century thinkers and strengthened by a poorly supported study from the 1920s. As a result, smell has long been
seen as the least important of the human senses.
However, new research challenges this misunderstanding. Scientists have found that the
human nose is far more skilled than once thought. In carefully managed experiments, humans can detect certain smells at levels lower than many animals, including rats, bats, and some monkeys. For example, the special smell added to natural gas to warn us of leaks can be sensed by humans even when only a few drops are mixed into an amount of water as large as an Olympic swimming pool.
The power of smell goes far beyond simple detection; it strongly influences human
behavior, often unconsciously. The weak smell of cleaning products, for example, can lead people to clean up. The familiar smell of coffee actually improves focus and mental performance. Stores often use “scent marketing”, understanding that the smell of fresh bread can create a friendly
environment, and raise the chance of buying things.
The way the human brain processes smell is also quite different from other senses. While vision provides a detailed map of our surroundings, smell creates a holistic impression, mixed
with inputs from other senses and emotions. The awareness of a lemon’s smell, for example, can be made stronger by its bright yellow color. Similarly, feelings of hunger or memories of past
sickness can greatly change how we experience food smells, making them either attractive or unpleasant.
This deep link between smell, memory, and emotion explains why smell loss (anosmia) can so severely damage one’s quality of life. As experienced by millions during the COVID-19
pandemic, anosmia can lead to a loss of appetite, as much of flavor comes from smell, and can
cause sadness and emotional disconnection. It can make people feel separated from the world and their memories.
Clearly, our sense of smell is not minor or unnecessary. It is a complex and powerful tool that continuously and quietly guides our interactions with the world, protects our well-being, and adds a rich, emotional layer to life.
51 .What is the traditional belief about the human sense of smell
A .Superior to animals’. B .Key to emotional memory.
C .Weak and unimportant. D .Complex but misunderstood.
52 .What is implied by the gas leak example
A .Dogs are unnecessary for gas detection. B .Humans can smell better than believed.
C .Human safety relies mainly on smell. D .The study aimed to compare species.
53 .What do we learn about smell from Paragraph 4
A .It gives environmental analysis. B .It is key to human survival.
C .It combines senses and feelings. D .It works without consciousness.
54 .What is a possible result of anosmia
A .Permanent taste loss. B .Better work concentration.
C .Connection with the world. D .Depression and isolation.
55 .What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A .To revalue the importance of smell.
B .To explain the causes of smell loss.
C .To discuss the history of perfume.
D .To describe the process of smelling.

Today, the number of Asian elephants seems to be going up in some places. By 2021, the
elephant population in Sri Lanka was back to nearly 6,000. But there’s a bigger problem: the
human population has grown even faster. Sri Lanka is about 25,000 square miles, but it has almost 22 million people. That means elephants in Sri Lanka don’t have much space to move around. The land they used to live on has been turned into towns and farms. So humans and elephants are
fighting more and more. When elephants find farmers’ crops, the farmers often lose a lot of money. Sometimes, these fights even get dangerous.
It all comes down to this riddle: How can an enormous animal keep living well on a
continent where space is only getting more limited The answer might lie in understanding the elephants themselves, not just as a species but as individuals.
Since January 2019, Sateesh Venkatesh, a graduate student who is researching elephants,
and his team have been giving the PVC-pipe test to elephants to observe their problem-solving
styles. In the test, apples had been placed inside the pipes, and the elephants’ task was to get the
apples out. Do elephants that approached the pipe hesitantly also stay farther from farmers’ fields Do the ones who tore at the pipe forcefully also brave the firecrackers (鞭炮) and flashing lights the farmers set off to scare them away at night
If elephants who are risk-takers can be identified, maybe the scientists will be able to figure out how to better keep them out offarms and thus reduce conflict with people. Besides, learning
all the different methods elephants employ to take down an electric fence would probably be helpful for designing better fences.
“It’s all very idealistic at this point, I have to admit,” says Venkatesh. “But it’s a fresh
approach. When a child, for example, is told they can’t have the cookies, he still wants a cookie. But we don’t put up an electric fence in the kitchen to prevent our children. We come up with
non-harmful, positive ways to keep them away from the cookies. I think we can do the same for elephants.”
56 .Why are humans and elephants fighting more in Sri Lanka
A .Asian elephants eat crops and destroy farms.
B .Human population grows faster leaving elephants less space.
C .Elephants often fight with humans over living areas.
D .Sri Lanka’s climate changes making elephants move areas.
57 .What is the purpose of the PVC-pipe test conducted by Sateesh Venkatesh’s team
A .To check how fast elephants find apples.
B .To test if pipes block elephants.
C .To compare elephants’ eating habits.
D .To learn how elephants solve problems.
58 .What can help reduce conflict between humans and elephants according to the passage
A .Drive risk-taking elephants away from farms.
B .Identify risk-takers and design better fences.
C .Teach elephants to avoid electric fences.
D .Stop using electric fences around farms.
59 .What does Venkatesh mean by comparing elephants to children
A .Guide elephants gently with safe methods, like kids.
B .Elephants need to learn rules, just like kids.
C .Electric fences don’t work for kids or elephants.
D .Both need strict control to stop bad behavior.
60 .Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A .Farms vs. Elephant Attacks in Sri Lanka Today
B .More Elephants Now Living in Sri Lanka Area
C .Elephants’ Problem-Solving Skills in Pipe Tests
D .Reduce Human-Elephant Fights: Study Personalities

In my early 30s, I struggled to find a dream job. One of my friends reminded me that I’d
always loved beauty, and suggested I apply for a licence, which would give me the freedom to set up my own business.
However, the only problem was that tuition fees were $6,000, which was out of my budget. I knew that my salary wouldn’t cover all the fees, even if I worked extra hours every day. I’d seen others set up crowd funding papers to help them achieve their goals. I thought I’d do the same.
Then, on a Friday night, I received a large amount of money in my bank account, which made me really surprised. There had been some mistakes. I assumed it was an illegal trick.
It turned out to be a donation. The name on it is one I instantly recognized: Chrissy Teigen, my favorite TV host. She had left a note: “I’ve seen that this has been your dream for such a long time. I’m so happy to lend you a hand.” I called my mom immediately. I was crying and not
making much sense. I just managed to say that Chrissy Telgen had made my dream come true.
The amount might have been a drop in the ocean for her, but it was life-changing for me.
Lots of other people donated after her. Soon I paid all the fees for the course. I couldn’t have been happier. I’ve now set up my own business, and I always think about Chrissy’s generosity. I did
thank her, and I still follow each other on Twitter. Hopefully, I will be able to give her a beauty treatment someday.

For a long time, science and culture held that the human sense
of smell was underdeveloped, especially compared to animals. This belief was started by
19th-century thinkers and strengthened by a poorly supported study from the 1920s. As a result,
smell has long been seen as the least important of the human senses.(长期以来,科学界和文化界认为人类的嗅觉不发达,尤其是与动物相比。
Scientists have found that the human nose is far more skilled than once thought. In carefully managed experiments, humans can detect certain smells at levels
lower than many animals, including rats, bats, and some monkeys. For example, the special smell added to natural gas to warn us of leaks can be sensed by humans even when only a few drops are mixed into an amount of water as large as an Olympic swimming pool.(科学家发现,人类的鼻子比以往认为的要灵敏得多。
The way the human brain processes smell is also quite
different from other senses. While vision provides a detailed map of our surroundings, smell
creates a holistic impression, mixed with inputs from other senses and emotions.(人类大脑处理嗅觉的方式也与其他感官截然不同。
根据第五段中的“This deep link between smell, memory, and emotion explains why smell loss (anosmia) can so severely damage one’s quality of life. As experienced by millions during the COVID-19 pandemic, anosmia can lead to a loss of appetite, as much of flavor comes
from smell, and can cause sadness and emotional disconnection. It can make people feel separated from the world and their memories.(嗅觉、记忆和情绪之间的这种深层联系,解释了为什么嗅觉丧失会严重损害人的生活质量。
For a long time, science and culture held that the
human sense of smell was underdeveloped, especially compared to animals. This belief was
started by 19th-century thinkers and strengthened by a poorly supported study from the 1920s. As a result, smell has long been seen as the least important of the human senses.(长期以来,科学界和文化界认为人类的嗅觉不发达,尤其是与动物相比。 以及最后一段中的“Clearly, our sense of smell is not minor or unnecessary. It is a complex and powerful tool that continuously and quietly guides our interactions with the
world, protects our well-being, and adds a rich, emotional layer to life.(显然,我们的嗅觉并非微不足道或毫无用处。 故选 A 项。

But there’s a bigger problem: the human population has grown even faster. Sri Lanka is about 25,000 square miles, but it has almost 22 million people. That
means elephants in Sri Lanka don’t have much space to move around. The land they used to live on has been turned into towns and farms. So humans and elephants are fighting more and
Since January 2019, Sateesh Venkatesh, a graduate student who is researching elephants, and his team have been giving the PVC-pipe test to elephants to observe
their problem-solving styles.(自 2019 年 1 月以来,研究大象的研究生 Sateesh Venkatesh 和他的团队一直在对大象进行 PVC 管测试,以观察它们解决问题的方式。)”可知,Sateesh
If elephants who are risk-takers can be identified, maybe the
scientists will be able to figure out how to better keep them out of farms and thus reduce conflict with people. Besides, learning all the different methods elephants employ to take down an electric
根据最后一段“When a child, for example, is told they can’t have the cookies, he still wants a cookie. But we don’t put up an electric fence in the kitchen to prevent our children. We come up with non-harmful, positive ways to keep them away from the cookies. I think we can do the same for elephants.(例如,当一个孩子被告知不能吃饼干时,他仍然想要。但我们不会在厨房设置电围栏来阻止孩子。我们会想出无害、积极的方法让他们远离饼干。我认为我们也可以对大象做同样的事。)”可知,Venkatesh 将大象比作孩子,是想表达应该用安全、温和的方法引导大象,就像对待孩子一样。故选 A。
It all comes down to this riddle: How can an enormous animal keep living well on a continent where space is only getting more limited The answer might lie in
understanding the elephants themselves, not just as a species but as individuals.(这一切都归结为一个谜题:在一个空间越来越有限的大陆上,这种巨大的动物如何才能继续好好生活?

Because the tuition fees were out of her budget./Because her salary couldn’t cover all the fees./Because she couldn’t afford tuition for a license.

It turned out to be a donation. The name on it is one I
