What do you do with your clothes that you don’t want to wear anymore Through cutting, stitching(缝)and redesigning. Baxter Salzwedel has found a fashionable way to be sustainnble(可持续的).
In March, recycling clothes earned the 17-year-old from Elkhart
Lake-Glenbeulah High School in Wisconsin, US, a finalist spot in the Young
Entrepreneurs competition. The competition was hosted by Junior Achievement of Wisconsin, a non-profit organization. He won a scholarship of $10, 000 for his
sustainable clothing brand The Mad Patcher.
In the beginning. Salzwedel just worked with clothes for fun. He learned his
sewing skills at a young age from his grandmother. He then started to tear up his old jeans to try and create cool new designs. The fun hobby quickly turned into a business for Salzwedel when his friends and classmates started asking him to make customized clothing for them.
“So many people wanted them that I wasn’t going to make 150 pairs of pants for free, so that was when 1 had to start making a business out ofit, ” Salzwedel told the Sheboygan Press.
In 2021, Salzwedel started his clothing brand. He uses colourful and patterned fabrics(布 料) from other clothes to create his patchwork(拼接) designs, like jeans, shirts and jackets. He only uses donated or recycled materials to ensure maximum
sustainability.
Salzwedel has earned thousands of dollars through selling his clothes, and he
donated 25 percent of his profits to non-profit organizations.
Talking about the competition, Salzwedel said, “It was exciting to do that and
meet all sorts of young people with similar ideas. ” The teenager planned to use the
prize to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. The college is one of the most famous fashion schools in the world. Meanwhile, he will continue doing his business even after he graduates. For Salzwedel, The Mad Patcher is a lifelong project worth working on.

A new study led by researchers at the University of California, Riverside, has found exposure to third-hand smoke (THS) causes skin diseases.
The study — the first to look at humans exposed to THS — involved 10 healthy non-smokers wearing clothing with either filtered (过滤的) air or THS chemicals. The investigation lasted three hours, during which participants would either walk or run
for 15 minutes per hour — this would make them sweat and increase the levels of
THS potentially taken in through the skin. Blood samples were collected, which were measured to see whether THS may have caused cell or tissue damage.
“We found THS exposure caused damage to DNA, lipids (脂质), and proteins, and the damage remained even after the exposure stopped,” said Shane
Sakamaki-Ching, a doctor of biology and the first author of the study. “Cigarette
smokers show the same result.” The study showed exposure to THS increases signals related with skin diseases, which makes sense: the organ most likely to come into
contact with THS is your skin, and so it receives the biggest exposure to the harmful chemicals. “However, what’s even more worrying is the tendency to lead to cancer,” added Sakamaki-Ching.
“If you buy a used car previously owned by a smoker, you are putting yourself at some health risk,” said Prue Talbot, a professor of cell biology at UC Riverside and the corresponding author of the study. “If you go to a restaurant that allows smoking, you are exposing your skin to THS. The same applies to staying in a hotel room that was previously occupied by a smoker.”
All that came from just three hours’ investigation. And if you think e-cigarette smokers are being forgotten, fear not: the team’s next project is to take a look at
which remains are left by these less-deadly death sticks.
Sakamaki-Ching said, “Our findings can help physicians in checking patients exposed to THS and help develop policies improving indoor environments polluted by THS.”
8 .Why were the participants in the study asked to take exercise
A .To keep themselves energetic. B .To speed up blood production.
C .To do away with THS by sweating. D .To have their skin absorb more THS. 9 .What can we learn from paragraph 3
A .THS is likely to cause skin cancer.
B .Cigarette smokers suffer more from THS.
C .The tendency to lead to cancer worries smokers.
D .The damage caused by THS remains until the exposure stops.
10 .What message does Prue Talbot want to convey in paragraph 4
A .Public places should ban smoking entirely.
B .THS can be widely found in our daily life.
C .Non-smokers must keep off smokers for health.
D .Sharing is a bad habit and should be abandoned.
11 .Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A .Ways to Prevent Skin Diseases Worsening
B .A Campaign to Be Proposed to Ban THS
C .THS Can Cause Skin Diseases
D .New Study Reveals the Potential Harm of Smoking

Tree-planting, intended to help draw down carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, has become a synonym (同义词) for climate action. In our constant focus on trees,
we’ve developed a fixed understanding: Trees absorb carbon dioxide, end of story.
The reality is that trees don’t grow well alone. They exist within complex
communities, helped along by each other as well as the animals they coexist with. The woodland isn’t nature’s only carbon sink: Grasslands and oceans also help reduce the carbon level and rely on a healthy amount of biodiversity.
That’s what the paper, published in Nature, wants to get across. Co-author
Oswald J. Schmitz, a professor of ecology at Yale University, said trees might not be able to do their carbon-uptake job efficiently without the right animals in their
ecosystem. That’s because animals animate the carbon cycle through their behavior and roles in the ecosystem. He added that the very presence of wild animals could
cause feedback effects that change the ecosystem’s capacity to absorb, release, or transport carbon.
In Serengeti, for instance, the sharp decline in wildebeest (角马) populations
during the mid-20th century allowed grass to grow wildly, eventually promoting
wildfires that consumed 80 percent of the ecosystem annually and led to a net release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. When disease management and bans on illegal hunting helped animal populations recover, a greater share of the carbon stored in
plants was consumed by wildebeest and released as waste, keeping it in the system and restoring the grassland as a carbon sink.
Researchers rarely consider wildlife conservation as a strategy to increase an
ecosystem’s carbon storage capacity, said Schmitz. “They think that animals either
aren’t important enough or that you can’t take up carbon and conserve animals at the same time,” he said. “Our message is that you can and should. It can be a win-win for both biodiversity conservation and carbon uptake.” We need a full picture - with both trees and animals - to explore nature’s full potential.
12 .What can we learn from the first paragraph
A .Actions are needed to reduce carbon dioxide.
B .Trees are a quick solution to the climate crisis.
C .Grasslands and oceans help maintain biodiversity.
D .People are not thinking through trees properly.
13 .What does the underlined word “animate” in paragraph 2 mean
A .Restart. B .Activate. C .Disturb. D .Break.
14 .What does the author want to say by mentioning wildebeest
A .Animals can change the ecosystem’s capacity to store carbon.
B .The conservation of animals is still a serious issue.
C .Human impacts bring about the reduction in wildlife populations.
D .The increase in animal species causes a decrease in carbon uptake.
15 .Which of the following is the best title for the text
A .Animals Adjust Themselves to Climate Change
B .Woodland Isn’t the Only Carbon Sink on the Earth
C .Trees May Fail to Fulfil Their Duties without Animals
D .The Serengeti Ecosystem Needs Urgent Improvement

The musical instrument I first learned was the violin, which was as small as a
kid’s toy, when I was six years old. After six years of being a violin learner, I decided to take on a new challenge: the cello (大提琴). My mom found an experienced cello teacher, Ms. Kim, who agreed to teach me in her cello studio.
At first, the pieces I played on the cell o were simple and uninspiring. However, everything changed when Ms. Kim offered me a challenging piece named
“Capriccio”. My dad, who was excited about the music that I would play, believed
mastering this piece was as impossible as a tiger flying in the sky. My mom looked up “Capriccio” on YouTube, her eyes widening as she watched a musician perform it
with grace and intensity, realizing how difficult the piece truly was. I felt a mix of excitement and anxiety.
“Capriccio” requires many techniques, and learning them was often frustrating. One particularly tough challenge was pressing several notes with my thumb, which
caused me tears as I struggled with the pain. My fingers felt awkward, and I worried I would never get it right. One day, after a particularly tiring practice session, Ms. Kim suggested I focus more on the dynamics ofthe piece. I misinterpreted her advice,
thinking she was frustrated with my slow progress. This doubt made me question my ability and Ms. Kim’s belief in me, fueling my frustration with the cello.
After a challenging practice one afternoon, feeling defeated, I finally opened up to Ms. Kim about my feelings. I shared my struggles and fears, expecting her to scold me for my lack of progress. To my surprise, she smiled gently, saying, “Sadie, I only push you because I see your potential!” Ms. Kim adapted her teaching style, focusing on my strengths while gently guiding me through my weaknesses. And her
encouragement regenerated my motivation: I began to approach “Capriccio” with renewed enthusiasm.

46 .Dear Henry,
It’s our duty to protect the environment, which is becoming worse and worse. We must do something to prevent people from polluting it. And I’d like to share some suggestions on how to live a low-carbon life.
Firstly, we should go to school on foot or by using public transport, such as riding bikes or taking a bus. Secondly, it’s necessary to save water and electricity by turning off taps, fans, and lights in time when we don’t need them. Thirdly, it is also good to make full use of paper. By
doing this, not only can we save resources but also we can protect trees.
I believe the environment will become better and better with our joint efforts.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
47 . I tried my best to practice playing the cello with the help of Ms. Kim. I got up at 5 o’clock every morning, driven by my determination to improve. In order not to disturb others, I went out
into the park to practice. After days of hard practice, my efforts paid offand I found my skills
improved rapidly. Ms. Kim was delighted with my progress, encouraging me to sign up for the competition to be held by her studio. Nervous as I was at first, I realized that stepping out of my comfort zone was essential, so I got up the courage and followed her advice.
The day of the competition finally arrived, and my cello performance started. At the
beginning, I felt very nervous, with my palms sweaty. But as I played, memories of practice
flooded into my mind, reminding me of all the hard work I had invested. The surge of feeling
combined with the encouraging smiles from Ms. Kim and my parents boosted my confidence,
allowing me to be immersed into the whole performance. When I finished “Capriccio”, the
audience burst out a storm of thunderous applause. Although I didn’t win first place, the
experience became the highlight of my musical journey, motivating me to practice even harder in the future.
