A Malawian woman, Gloria Majiga-Kamoto, was recently awarded the Goldman
Environmental Prize for Africa — the world’s leading award for grassroots environmental activists.
Gloria Majiga-Kamoto was then working for a local environmental organization with a
program that gave goats to rural farmers, who would use the goat waste to produce low-cost,
high-quality organic fertilizer (肥料). The problem The thin plastic bags covering the Malawian countryside. “We have this very common street food, chiwaya, which is salty and served in little blue plastics,” Majiga-Kamoto says. “Goats eat the plastic for salty taste and they die because it
blocks the ingestion (摄食) system.” For her, this was the moment when it all changed. All of a
sudden, she started noticing how plastics were everywhere in the Malawian environment and food system-affecting people’s living and health.
“I remember back in the day when we’d go to the market and buy things like fish, you’d get it in newspapers,” the 30-year-old says. But thin plastics took off in the last decade or so as new
producers sprung up in Malawi, selling products like thin plastic bags at cheap prices. In fact, the Malawian government decided to ban the importation, production and distribution of single-use plastic in 2015. But before the ban could go into full effect, Malawi’s plastics-producing industry appealed to the country’s High Court against the ban, causing it to be suspended.
When Majiga-Kamoto and her fellow environmentalists heard about this, they were
annoyed. She organized marches and rejected the plastic industry’s argument that the ban would hurt Malawi’s economy — and even debated with an industry spokesman on TV. Finally in 2019, Malawi’s High Court ruled in favor of the ban. The following year, the government began closing down illegal plastic producers.
Michael Sutton, executive director of the Goldman Environmental Foundation, said,
“Majiga-Kamoto’s fight with the plastic industry is a perfect example of the spirit of the prize.”
24 .What made Majiga-Kamoto realize the problem
A .Her experience with plastic-eating goats.
B .Her discovery of goat waste everywhere.
C .Her doubt about the safety of street food.
D .Her care for the farmers living in poverty.
25 .What can we learn about Malawi
A .It used to be extremely rich in fish.
B .It advocated using thin plastic bags.
C .It failed to ban single-use plastic at first.
D .It relied heavily on the plastic industry.
26 .What was the purpose of Majiga-Kamoto’s acts in Paragraph 4
A .To put the ban into effect.
B .To support the government.
C .To back the plastic industry up.
D .To promote Malawi’s economy.
27 .Which of the following best describes Majiga-Kamoto
A .Humble. B .Generous. C .Patient. D .Committed.
C
For a long time, space exploration depended on large, heavy satellites that cost a huge
amount of money and required powerful rockets to launch. These machines could weigh several tons and take years to design and build. But in recent years, tiny satellites have completely
changed how humans explore and use outer space.
Mini-satellites (微型卫星) are no bigger than a small box. Some are even just the size of a book. At first, many space experts doubted whether such small machines could work well in outer space. They worried the tiny tools would not be strong enough to stand the environment outside
the Earth’s atmosphere.
Early mini-satellites had clear limitations. They could carry only simple instruments and
had short working lives. Most could not change their direction once in orbit, and their signals were easy to lose. Yet scientists refused to give up. They kept testing new materials and smaller,
smarter electronic parts to solve these problems.
Modern mini-satellites are far more powerful than their early forms. Special light metals and plastic protect them from extreme temperatures and space rubbish. They are equipped with small cameras, sensors and communication systems that can record data and send messages back to Earth. Some can even move gently in orbit by using special low-power engines.
What makes these tiny satellites so useful is their ability to work in groups. Instead of
launching one large satellite, scientists send up tens or even hundreds of mini-satellites at the same time. They spread out in orbit and cover larger areas than any single big satellite. This group work helps with weather recording, environmental monitoring and space mapping.
Another important advantage is the cost. Mini-satellites cost far less to build and launch.
Universities, small research groups and even private companies can now afford to design and send up their own satellites. This has opened space research to far more people around the world.
Today, mini-satellites are helping humans study the weather, watch over forests and oceans, and even support communication in remote areas. They have proved that size does not decide
value in space. As technology continues to improve, these small but strong satellites will play an even bigger role in the future of space exploration.
28 .What protects mini-satellites from space risks
A .Thick, heavy metal covers.
B .Light metals and special plastic.
C .High power, strong engines.
D .Small, clear camera lenses.
29 .What does the underlined word “limitations” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A .Clear, useful advantages. B .Clear, obvious weaknesses.
C .New, useful functions. D .Old, serious problems.
30 .What was a shortcoming of early mini-satellites
A .Short, limited working lives.
B .Strong, clear signal strength.
C .Easy, quick direction changes.
D .Heavy, complex material structure.
31 .What is the best title for this text
A .Large, heavy old satellites
B .Space rubbish and its bad effects
C .Rocket launch costs and methods
D .Small satellites, big space value

AI image generators have made a giant leap forward in a remarkably short period. These highly-developed systems are now capable of creating human faces that are not only convincing but often perceived as more realistic than actual human ones. This phenomenon, termed
“hyper-realism”, poses a significant challenge to digital trust. However, a recent collaborative study by researchers from the UK points to a promising path: improving our collective AI-face detection capabilities through specialized, targeted training.
The research team tested the face-assessing skills of 664 volunteers, categorized into two distinct groups: “super-recognizers” — individuals who possess a rare, naturally superior ability for facial recognition — and those with typical recognition skills. The experiment involved two core tasks designed to test intuition (直觉) and logic. In the initial task, volunteers evaluated a single image to determine its origin; in the subsequent task, they were presented with a pair of faces — one real and one artificial — and asked to identify the fake.
In the control group that received no prior instruction, the data revealed a worrying trend.
Super-recognizers correctly identified AI faces only 41 percent of the time, while typical
recognizers dropped to a mere 31 percent. Given that half the images were AI-generated, both groups performed significantly worse than random chance (50 percent). This statistical gap
confirms that AI portraits can effectively trick the human brain’s natural processing systems.
To counter this, the study introduced a brief five-minute intervention. Participants were trained to look for “tell-tale” signs — fine biological imperfections such as unnatural teeth
alignment or strange blurring where the hair meets the skin.
Following this session, the accuracy of super-recognizers boosted to 64 percent. In contrast, while typical recognizers improved to 51 percent, they remained at the level of a coin flip.
“As AI images are increasingly exploited for illegal purposes like identity theft scams (骗局), testing detection methods is crucial from a security perspective”, explains researcher
EilidhNoyes. The findings highlight that while technology evolves, human expertise remains bining natural talent with professional training may be our best defence in confirming digital identities and securing the future of online interaction.
32 .The study mainly examines participants’ .
A .logical reasoning B .reaction speed
C .technical knowledge D .observational skills
33 .What is the meaning of “counter” in paragraph 4
A .To approve of. B .To argue against.
C .To act in opposition to. D .To examine in detail.
34 .What is the significance of the 64 percent accuracy rate mentioned in paragraph 5
A .It confirms the potential of combining gift with practice.
B .It represents the maximum limit of human recognition.
C .It shows the similarity between human and AI.
D .It indicates that most people can be trained to spot false images.
35 .What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A .Technical evolution will eventually eliminate identity theft
B .Professional training is more essential than natural talent.
C .Human factors remain a critical layer in digital defense.
D .The security risks of AI are currently overestimated.

Improving Your Concentration
Concentrating can be difficult, especially with so many distractions around us. Whether you are studying for an exam or working on a project, staying focused is key to success. 36
Create a quiet environment.
The place where you work has a big impact on your concentration. Find a space that is free from noise and interruptions. 37 For example, if you are in a library, choose a corner
away from the main entrance. If you’re at home, tell your family members that you need some private time.
Break tasks into smaller steps.
Large projects can feel overwhelming, which makes it easy to lose focus. ____38____ By focusing on one small task at a time, you will feel a sense of progress. This keeps you motivated and helps you stay on track until the entire project is completed.
39
It might seem counterintuitive, but taking breaks actually improves concentration. Working for hours without stopping leads to brain fatigue. This allows your mind to rest and recover for a few minutes. After a short walk or a stretch, you will find it easier to return to your work with a
fresh mind and better energy.
Limit your use of technology.
Notifications from social media are major distractions. Try to put your phone in another room or use apps that block distracting websites. 40 By removing these digital
temptations, you can give your full attention to the task you need to do.
A .Take regular breaks to recharge.
B .Use a timer to manage your sessions.
C .Try to divide a big job into several manageable parts.
D .Here are some effective tips to help you boost your focus.
E .Concentration is a skill that requires constant practice every day.
F .It is essential to eliminate anything that might draw your attention away.
G .This ensures that you won’t be tempted to check messages every few minutes.

Summer came along, and my friend Neil suggested we ride our bicycles eighty miles from Saskatoon to Lake Diefenbaker for the official opening of the Gardiner Dam. He called this
adventure a “Centennial Project”, thus turning an irresponsible joke into a noble pursuit. It took a bit of convincing to get parental permission but, after promising to be careful and make a collect call home from every town we went through, the answer was “yes”.
Neil was thirteen and I was twelve. We set off for our big adventure. I had a borrowed
three-speed bicycle, five dollars in my pocket, and a cotton sleeping bag. A few hours into our trip, our joy kicked in as our bikes sped down the mile-long hill at the end of newly constructed, man-made Blackstrap Lake. We held on for dear life as we rushed faster on two wheels than we ever thought possible. It was a lot less fun when we had to climb up the other side of the valley.
Hours later we were in the middle of nowhere. Our water was gone, I had a flat front tire, and we were walking unsteadily under the sky. The highway extended on forever in front of us. We had been walking for what seemed like a century when a huge yellow Department of
Highways truck pulled up.
“You boys need a ride ” “Yes, we do.” we replied, and seconds later two big workers threw our bikes up into the dump box and we were off. We told the men our story and they thought it
quite amusing. Ten minutes later we were off-loaded at the Kenaston Garage, where I was able to get my tire fixed for fifty cents.
Just that quickly we were back on the road! The sun filled the western sky as we
approached the little community of Hawarden. Night was coming and we cycled around the town looking for a place to sleep under the stars. What a great adventure! The schoolyard looked
promising as it offered a shelter. Hopefully the night would be clear, as we had no umbrella.注意:

67 .范文
Hungry, we entered a restaurant. When we talked about our story, the boss’s eyes lit up
with warmth as she listened. Knowing we were two ill-prepared, underequipped and
inexperienced kids, she didn’t laugh at us but seemed quite taken with us. Then she asked, “Where are you boys planning on sleeping tonight ” “We aren’t sure,” we replied. “Maybe the school
playground ” She responded immediately, “Oh no, you won’t. You boys are coming home with me and staying at my house!”
Appreciating her offer, we followed her into a clean room. That night we found ourselves
sweating in the heat of her three-story home. In the morning she fed us eggs and sent us on our
way with best wishes for the successful completion of our project, pressing a couple of apples into our hands for the road. Without her, we might have slept on the school playground. Even today I
still owed the successful adventure to the kindness, care and generosity of strangers.
