Deep in the Bywater neighborhood, between the Mississippi River and St. Claude Avenue, sits Alvar Library. Built in 1940 and often noted for its special decorative design and Works Progress Administration roots, this tiny one-room library stands out in history for another reason: a dedicated community that refuses to give up on it.
Over the decades, this beloved library has seen its neighbors rise up in its defense time and time again, saving it from purchase by a nearby meat-packing plant, securing government funding for its renovations, and volunteering to help staff it. In 1977, a man even chained himself to the building to protest its proposed destruction after it had fallen into disrepair.
That man was Marc Cooper, the then-president of the Bywater Neighborhood Association, who said he hoped the action would help push their message out from the limits of the neighborhood. “It just seemed that our appeals were falling on deaf ears,” Cooper told The Times-Picayune at a celebration for Alvar Library’s 50th anniversary in 1990. The association was ultimately able to secure funding for the building’s repairs, which were completed in 1982.
But, a mere four years later, the city was again considering shutting down Alvar Library, citing declining resources. However, the neighborhood association stood back up, preventing this fate (命运) once more by forming a volunteer workforce to help staff the location.
In the years since, neighbors have regularly gathered at the library for storytimes and book clubs, writing workshops and homework help, author talks and game nights, and so much more.
Sara Jacobelli, one of the three staff members, said she has been able to form meaningful and long-lasting relationships with Alvar Library users in her more than five years at the location. “I’ve lived in the Bywater, off and on, for 20 years, and I know many of our regulars,” Jacobelli said. “Many of them were my friends before I worked here. When they see me walking down the street, or in bars and restaurants, they tell me how much they appreciate Alvar Library.”
24. Which words can best describe Alvar Library
A. Grand and modern. B. Historic and delicate.
C. Spacious and classical. D. Ruined and mysterious.
25. How did Cooper sound when talking to The Times-Picayune
A. Cautious. B. Annoyed. C. Delighted. D. Confident.
26. Which year saw the ending of Alvar Library’s uncertain fate
A. 1977. B. 1982. C. 1986. D. 1990.
27. What message does Jacobelli want to convey in the last paragraph
A. She feels proud of working at Alvar Library.
B. It takes patience to meet the needs of readers.
C. She is content with the service of Alvar Library.
D. Working at Alvar Library is sometimes quite challenging.

When it comes to mating, two things matter to Heliconius butterflies: the look and the smell of their potential partner. The black and orange butterflies have incredibly small brains, yet they must process both sensory inputs at the same time — which is more than current artificial intelligence(AI) technologies can achieve without significant energy consumption. To make AI as smart as the butterflies, a team of Penn State researchers has created a multi-sensory AI platform that is both more advanced and uses less energy than other AI technologies.
Current AI technologies often fall short in mimicking(模仿)the multi-sensory decision-making processes that humans and animals use, the researchers said. This can limit AI’s potential for uses in robotics and smart sensors that detect dangers like faulty structures or approaching chemical leaks.
“If you think about the AI we have today, you’ll find we have very good image processors based on visual or excellent language processors that use audio(声音),” said Saptarshi Das, associate professor of engineering science and mechanics. “But when you think about most animals and also human beings, decision-making is based on more than one sense. While AI performs quite well with a single sensory input, multi-sensory decision-making is not happening with current AI.”
Heliconius butterflies choose a mate via a simultaneous(同时的)visual signal — seeing that the potential mate’s wing pattern is indeed one of a Heliconius butterfly — and a chemical signal of pheromones released by the other butterfly. Of note, Das said, the butterfly manages this with a tiny brain that uses minimal energy. This is in direct contrast to modern computing, which consumes a significant amount of energy.
“Brains of butterflies and many other animals are very tiny, and they use low amounts of resources, both in terms of energy used and the physical size of the brain,” Das said. “And yet they perform computational tasks that rely on multiple sensory inputs at once.”
28. What is one weakness of current AI compared to Heliconius butterflies
A. It fails to process visual images accurately.
B. It uses too much energy for the same tasks.
C. It can’t distinguish between two sensory inputs.
D. It can’t function well with relatively small brains.
29. What’s the point Das tries to make in paragraph 3
A. The quality of AI processors today are well guaranteed.
B. Animals depend on multiple senses for decision-making.
C. Current AI is incapable of multi-sensory decision-making.
D. It’s a complex sensory activity for humans to make decisions.
30. What features Heliconius butterflies’ mate choosing
A. Sound and light. B. Sight and smell.
C. Speed and strength. D. Memory and learning.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. How Intelligent Are Butterflies
B. Heliconius Butterflies: Smarter than Imagined
C. Human Brain vs AI: What Makes Better Decisions
D. Multi-Sensory AI Inspired by Tiny Butterfly Brains

Contrary to scientists’ expectations, polar bears in the Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard have become fatter and healthier since the early 1990s, even though sea ice has been decreasing steadily due to climate change.
Researchers weighed and measured 770 adult bears in Svalbard between 1992 and 2019 and found that they had become significantly fatter. They think that Svalbard bears have adapted to recent ice loss by eating more land-based prey, including the reindeer.
The discovery, published in Scientific Reports, was particularly puzzling because of the impact of climate change in Svalbard. “The fatter a bear is, the better it is,” explained lead researcher Dr Jon Aars from the Norwegian Polar Institute. “And I would have expected to see a decline in body condition when the loss of sea ice has been so profound.”
Walruses have been officially protected in Norway since the 1950s, after they were hunted to near extinction. That protection has boosted their numbers, and apparently provided a new source of fatty food for polar bears. “There are a lot more walruses (海象) around for them to hunt these days,” said Aars. “It is also possible that they are able to hunt seals more efficiently.” He explained that if seals have smaller areas of sea ice available to them, they will congregate in those smaller areas, presenting easier collective pickings for bears.
While this is unexpected good news for these Arctic predators (捕食者), the researchers think it is unlikely to last. As the sea ice continues to decline, bears will have to travel further to access hunting grounds, consuming more energy and depleting (耗尽) precious fat reserves. Experts think the new findings could be linked to the population recovering from that hunting pressure. That, combined with an increase in the number of walruses and reindeer in recent decades, appears to have provided the bears with a temporary boost.
Dr John Whiteman, chief research scientist at PBI said the results were “positive in the short term”. “But body condition is only one piece of the puzzle. Other recent research on these bears found that more ice-free days reduced survival in cubs, subadults and old females.”
32. What was scientists’ previous assumption about Svalbard bears
A. They would unlikely reach adulthood. B. They would adapt to the climate change.
C. They would have to make dietary changes. D. They would be badly impacted by ice loss.
33. What does the underlined word “congregate” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Gather. B. Starve. C. Compete. D. Observe.
34. Why is the good situation for the Arctic bears unlikely to be long-lasting
A. They will face a much greater risk of being hunted.
B. Their population will keep increasing too quickly.
C. They will have to make longer hunting journeys.
D. The number of walruses will drop sharply.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Svalbard bears will become extinct.
B. The loss of sea ice threatens female bears most.
C. Ice plays a key role in the survival of polar bears.
D. Body weight doesn’t reflect bears’ health conditions.

Ashley Gubernat was asleep inside her home when the fire alarm suddenly went off. She woke up with a start, only to find flames already burning on the first floor. Panic surged through her body as she realized the fire was spreading quickly, with thick smoke filling the house. She had to act fast.
Despite the fear rising in her chest, Ashley knew one thing for certain: she had to get her children to safety. Without a second thought, she rushed into her younger son’s room, quickly lifted him from his crib (婴儿床), and ran toward the second-floor window. As the smoke thickened around her, the urgency in her actions grew. Her heart was racing as the heat from the fire became unbearable. Her mind went blank, but she had no time to think. She forced herself to stay calm. She had to get her children out of there before it was too late.
Just as she reached the window, a terrifying sound rang through the air — her older son was still trapped inside. “Mom! Help! I can’t breathe!” His cries echoed (回荡)through the house, filled with panic as he banged on the walls, desperately trying to draw attention to his location.
Ashley quickly fetched her older son with her younger son in her arms. The fire was drawing closer, the smoke growing thicker by the second. She froze for a moment, unsure of what to do next. Every moment felt like a lifetime, but there was no time to hesitate.
Just then, a familiar voice shouted from below. It was her neighbor, Steven Angelini. He had heard the commotion (喧闹)and rushed over to help. Upon seeing Ashley at the window, he quickly positioned himself below, his voice strong and confident despite the overwhelming danger. “Drop the kids! I’ll catch them! Just drop them. I’m here!”

【答案】One possible version:
Ashley looked down and saw Steven standing below. He extended his arms, ready to catch the kids. Trusting him with all her heart, she gently dropped her younger son down to Steven. Her heart was in her throat, but Steven caught him perfectly. Before Ashley could even fully process what had just happened, she repeated the action with her older son, who landed safely in Steven’s arms as well. However, a wave of relief was instantly crushed by renewed terror — she was now alone at the window, the exit blocked by roaring flames behind her.
Just then, more neighbors arrived, bringing a ladder (梯子). Ashley hesitated for a moment but knew she had no other choice. Climbing down the ladder, Ashley finally reached the ground, her body trembling from both the fear and the relief that washed over her. She collapsed as soon as she was on solid ground, unable to speak through the overwhelming emotions. No one had been seriously injured. Although the house was badly damaged, the family was safe, thanks to her neighbors’ quick thinking and bravery.
