Does rainy weather make you sleepy If so, you’re not alone! Many people feel the same way. Do you know why
One of the reasons is the lack of sunlight. Our brain produces many different chemicals. Among them, melatonin (褪黑激素) makes us feel sleepy, while serotonin (血清素) helps us regulate (调节) our mood and energy. Lack of sunlight on rainy days makes our brain produce more melatonin and less serotonin. As a result, we may feel sleepy and a little blue.
The humidity (湿度) of a rainy day is another reason. Sweating (出汗) is how our body keeps cool. But when it rains, the air is more humid (潮湿的) than usual. It’s harder for our sweat to evaporate (蒸发). Therefore, the body must work harder to stay cool. This can make us feel tired.
In addition, the sound of rain, a type of pink noise, also plays a part. Like white poise, pink noise includes all the sound frequencies (声音频率) that humans can hear. But pink noise has fewer high frequencies than white noise. This makes pink noise sound softer. Pink noise, scientists say, can reduce people’s brain waves and make them feel sleepy. In nature, there are also other examples of pink noise, such as the sound of rustling(沙沙作响的) leaves and wind.
Now you know why rain makes you feel sleepy. What can you do if you don’t like that feeling Well, you can get as much natural light as possible and keep yourself busy. If you have a dehumidifier (除湿机), you can also turn it on to help you stay awake.
What is the Chinese meaning of the underlined word “blue”
A.蓝色的
B.忧郁的
C. 开心的
D. 兴奋的
Why must our body work harder to stay cool on rainy days
A. Because it’s harder for our sweat to evaporate.
B. Because it is afraid of rain.
C. Because we feel more tired.
D. Because we are lack of sunlight.
What can you do to deal with feeling sleepy on rainy days
A. We can take some useful medicine.
B. We can get as much natural light as possible.
C. We can buy an air conditioner to keep cool.
D. We can bring an umbrella with us.
What’s the best title for the text
A. Why does rain make you sleepy
B. What can we do on rainy-days
C. How can we deal with tiredness
D. How to deal with feeling sleepy

① Do you yawn (打哈欠) According to some research, scientists think that there are about 20 possible reasons for yawning. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they do know many facts about yawning.
② We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning is contagious (会传染的). When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too.
③ Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true. People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. Why is that In 2007, scientists found that yawning can help cool the brain.
④ Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch (伸展) muscles in your face, mouth, and neck. Your eardrums (耳膜) stretch, too. Maybe this helps you be quicker to notice things. That’s why we yawn.
⑤ In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things can go out of the body with the air.
⑥ Scientists do not spend much time studying yawning. That is probably because yawning does not hurt. It is just something we do.
What does the underlined word “it” refer to
A. Air.
B. Yawning.
C. The mouth.
D. The face.
Why do Olympic runners often yawn before a race

Have you ever tasted a kind of snack, which is also one of the traditional Chinese forms of art—sugar painting
Sugar painting started from the Ming Dynasty and became popular in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, many people made a living through sugar painting, setting up stalls (货摊) in crowded streets, in front of theatres and in other busy public places. And now it can still be four China.
Sugar painters usually sit at a wooden table. On the table, there is a wooden plate with a revolvable arrow (可旋转箭头) on it. The plate is painted with different pictures such as a dragon, a bird, a flower and so on. After paying, the customer turns the arrow and waits till it stops. The picture pointed by the arrow is the one the painter will make.
Sugar painting is very different from normal painting. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth slab (台面) as the “paper”. To make the syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since the syrup will become solid (固体的) if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of the syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting of an animal, a flower or a bike is done.
The number of sugar painters is getting smaller. However, some of them still insist (坚持) on this art. They make their efforts to hold different activities such as offering classes and giving speeches. Now, sugar painting has already been listed as a National Non-Material Cultural Heritage.
