Children with disorders of consciousness are fully dependent on caregivers for
daily care such as hydration (使吸入水分), nutrition, washing and dressing. However,
there is a shortage of tools to evaluate consciousness for children aged 2 to 18.
Neurodevelopmental changes with age further complicate the assessment of children’
s awareness.
To address this problem, researchers from Anglia Ruskin University, The
Children’s Trust and Temple University have created the MuSICCA tool. It uses
musical stimulation to help children demonstrate their level of consciousness.
Specially selected music is performed live by a qualified music therapist, who adjusts
the music based on the child’s responses to maximize their chance to show their
abilities.
The therapist observes and records the child’s behaviour using standard scales,
and MuSICCA then generates a diagnosis of their consciousness level.
In the study, researchers invited music therapists, families of brain-injured
children and healthcare professionals to evaluate the tool. After demonstration and
Q&A sessions, participants rated two statements about MuSICCA: whether it assesses
consciousness, and whether it is suitable for children and young people. They also
commented on its strengths and weaknesses.
All participants agreed with the two statements, with 85% strongly agreeing with
each. Lead author Dr Jonathan Pool stated that children with consciousness disorders
rely on others to interpret their subtle behaviour, and reliable assessment tools are
urgently needed. MuSICCA enables rigorous assessment of responses to musical
stimuli, clearly showing the child’s consciousness level and response patterns. The
results are easy to share with care and medical teams and help families understand
how to support their child’s recovery.
The study confirms that MuSICCA is a suitable and comprehensive assessment
method, with advantages for providing guidance, engaging caregivers and assisting
clinical teams.
24. What problem are children with disorders of consciousness faced with
A. They need help with daily care.
B. They cannot get proper medical treatment.
C. Their consciousness is hard to assess.
D. Their development is affected by age.
25. How does the MuSICCA tool work
A. It asks children to make music.
B. It uses pre-recorded music to test children.
C. It depends on parents to report behaviour.
D. It changes music based on a child’s reactions.
26. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. Who was invited to take part. B. How the evaluation was conducted.
C. Why different experts were needed. D. What opinions participants held.
27. What does Dr Jonathan Pool’s statement suggest about MuSICCA
A. It aids children’s treatment and healing.
B. All participants agreed it was effective.
C. It can replace caregivers’ observations.
D. Caregivers need to learn how to use it.
C
You are in a quiet room, trying to focus on an important report. Yet a short piece
of melody keeps circling in your mind, refusing to leave. This phenomenon, known as
an "earworm," may be more than just an annoyance—it reveals something about how
our brains work.
Researchers suggest that earworms may arise from a type of withdrawal response
to the absence of music. When we desire music but cannot hear it, our brains may
generate their own internal melodies, leading to an earworm.
Studies show that earworms are more likely to occur with songs heard frequently
or recently. In one experiment, participants listened to an unfamiliar song either two
or six times. Over the following three days, researchers contacted them at random
intervals. About one-third reported having the song stuck in their heads at the time of
contact. The effect was stronger for those who had heard the song six times and was
most common the day after exposure.
Once an earworm takes hold, it does more than just bother us—it invades our
working memory. Working memory is the cognitive system that holds and processes
information in the short term. When a song is stuck in our heads, it occupies valuable
space in this system, making it harder to recall other information accurately. The more
familiar the song, the greater the interference.
So how can we get rid of an unwanted earworm A surprisingly simple solution
may be chewing gum. Part of our working memory relies on the "inner voice," which
involves tiny, unconscious movements of the throat muscles. Chewing gum engages
these same muscles, potentially disrupting the mental loop of the earworm and
helping it fade away.
28. What is the main cause of earworms according to the text
A. Lack of sleep.
B. Overuse of social media.
C. A desire for music without hearing it.
D. Exposure to loud environments.
29. What did the experiment in paragraph 3 reveal
A. Frequent listening increases the chance of earworms.
B.Earworms disappear completely after three days.
C. Unfamiliar songs never become earworms.
D. Earworms only occur during sleep.
30. How do earworms affect cognitive performance
A. They improve long-term memory.
B. They reduce the capacity of working memory.
C. They help focus attention on tasks.
D. They increase creativity.
31. Why might chewing gum help stop an earworm
A. It distracts the brain with a new sound.
B. It relaxes the entire body.
C. It occupies the throat muscles used by the "inner voice."
D. It releases chemicals that calm the brain.
D
From the national Spring Festival Gala to local cultural performances, humanoid
robots (人形机器人) are making their presence felt across China during the New Year
celebrations. Their appearances signal how deeply technology is becoming woven
into the fabric of tradition.
At the Spring Festival Gala, four leading robot startups demonstrated advanced
capabilities, with robots performing alongside human dancers. Beyond the main event,
robots joined a dance drama in Jiangxi Province dedicated to Tiangong Kaiwu, a
17th-century Chinese encyclopedia of technology and industry. "The performance
shows respect to technology, and the robots amazed us again," said audience member
Hu Jingchen.
In Shandong Province, a special gala hosted by the local robotics industry
association featured over 200 robots and robotic dogs in 19 programs, including
acrobatics (杂技), martial arts, and mini-dramas. Robots served as drummers, waved
glowing signs, and delivered humorous lines, bringing both amazement and laughter
to the audience.
The robotics sector in China is evolving rapidly. According to the Ministry of
Industry and Information Technology, by 2025 China had over 140 humanoid robot
makers releasing more than 330 models. Robots are transitioning from stage
performers to daily companions.
Jinan resident Wang Yan purchased an AI robot this Spring Festival. "It keeps
our pets company, helps the children practice English, and chats with the elders," she
said. "It's no longer just a toy. It's becoming a long-term, evolving AI companion."
The integration of robots into festive celebrations reflects a broader trend:
technology is no longer a distant concept but an increasingly familiar part of everyday
life—even during the most traditional of holidays.
32. What is the main focus of the text
A. The history of the Spring Festival Gala.
B. The rise of robot startups in China.
C. The role of robots in Chinese New Year celebrations.
D. The challenges of performing acrobatics with robots.
33. What can be inferred about the robots' performance in Jiangxi
A. It replaced human dancers entirely.
B. It was part of a show honoring historical technology.
C. It received negative reviews from the audience.
D. It was the first time robots performed in public.
34. What does Wang Yan's experience suggest
A. Robots are too expensive for ordinary families.
B. Robots are becoming integrated into daily home life.
C. Robots can only perform simple tasks.
D. Children prefer robots to human companions.
35. What does the text imply about the future of robots in China
A. They will replace traditional celebrations.
B. Their development will slow down after 2025.
C. They will be limited to industrial use.
D. Their role in society is likely to expand.
第二节(共 5小题;每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中
有两项为多余选项。
People favor humor, as it lights up daily moments, eases awkwardness and makes every
interaction warm and enjoyable. This magic of humor doesn't just work in daily life; it also
shines in the field of science, especially online. 36
Firstly, humor simplifies tough scientific knowledge. 37 For example,
explaining AI in self-driving cars with a funny analogy about “machines learning like clumsy
toddlers” makes abstract ideas easy for non-professional groups to understand. 38
Scientists sharing clever and humorous stories about laboratory experiments on social media
often attract more interactions than dry academic posts. Additionally, humor humanizes
scientists, as seen in popular science lectures where light-hearted jokes help audiences feel
closer to researchers.
39 The hidden risks deserve our attention. If the content itself is untrue,
humor can even replace facts, leading the audience to form wrong opinions about scientific
knowledge just based on the amusing posts they see. Overusing sarcasm or negative humor
also has the opposite effect, as it will quickly make scientists lose the public's trust and
damage their credibility.
Proper humor use requires a balance between vivid expression and professional
precision. It should neither overshadow the core scientific information nor be so shallow that
it loses seriousness. 40 Scientists who master this balance can effectively narrow
the divide with the public, making science more welcoming and popular.
A.Overuse harms professionalism.
B.It also boosts audience engagement effectively.
C.It helps break the impression of scientists being cold and distant.
D.A little humor can greatly enhance scientists' communication effect.
E.Humor in scientific communication is a double-edged sword, though.
F.It's a helper in making complex concepts understandable to ordinary people.
G.It is believed humor needs to be used with great care in such communication.

With society placing increasing pressure on achievement, it is understandable that
people tend to hide their weaknesses. However, this tendency may bring ____41____
consequences.

For many people, being authentic — showing one’s true self — is far from
____46____. As social beings, we are used to adapting to our environment, which

____50____ the attitudes of those around them. Even people who do not intend to be

quality but begins to ____51____ within a group, shaping the overall work
atmosphere.
One explanation for this effect is that authentic people do not place

feel ____53____ when sharing their true feelings. Over time, such an atmosphere
encourages cooperation and openness. Therefore, by focusing less on appearing
hardworking and more on becoming well-rounded individuals, we can make a lasting
____54____ in our environment. At the same time, we may inspire others to follow

Many elderly people living alone in Liu Xin’s community, most of whom are
over 70 years old, are in poor health and have difficulty moving, which makes their
daily life very hard. The nearest supermarket is far from the community, so they can’t
go out to buy food easily, especially when it rains or snows, and they have to stay at
home.
They also don’t have the strength to carry heavy things, and they often have to
save food for several days, eating the same food every day. Some elderly people even
have trouble cooking simple meals by themselves, and they can only eat some simple
and cold food every day, which is not good for their health and often makes them feel
unwell.
They also don’t know how to use smart phones to make video calls with their
children, so they can only miss their children silently every day. They often sit by the
window, looking at the photos of their children and grandchildren for a long time,
with tears in their eyes, and they often talk to the photos quietly, sharing their daily
life.
Some elderly people even have trouble turning on the lights at night or taking
medicine on time, which often makes them anxious and helpless. They are afraid of
getting sick and having no one to take care of them, and they often worry about being
forgotten by their children. This situation made Liu Xin and her classmates very
worried after they learned about it during their community volunteer work.
One day, when Liu Xin and her classmates were doing volunteer work in the
community, they learned about the difficult situation of these elderly people from the
community staff. They felt sorry for the elderly and couldn’t bear to see them live
such a hard and lonely life, so they decided to do something to help them.
They discussed together and decided to set up a help team to take care of them.
They made a detailed schedule, divided into several groups, and planned to take turns
to visit the elderly every weekend, bringing them care and warmth to drive away their
loneliness and help them solve their daily difficulties.
Paragraph 1:
Every weekend, Liu Xin and her classmates went to the elderly’s homes with
fruits and daily necessities.
Paragraph 2:
Their kind actions influenced other residents in the community.
