My uncle George, a mentally disabled man, enjoys a simple life-no smartphones, no Internet-so
communication is limited to in person or old-style phone calls.
I have always shared a special bond with him. For years, George would periodically ask for my
cellphone number and write it down. He’d call a bunch of times and then suddenly stop, because he had
lost the piece of paper with my number on it. This went on for years, until at some point, around six
years ago, he committed my number to memory. Ever since then, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., he calls me
once a day, without fail, 365 days a year.
Our phone calls always follow the same structure, using one of three fantasy realities from
George’s imagination. In one, he’s my dad and I’m his son. In another, he’s Major Charles Winchester,
and I’m Captain B.J. Hunnicutt, reporting for duty. In the last, we’re both lifeguards, performing the
rescue of a drowning person. We go back and forth in character for about a minute and a half, only
breaking the bit to laugh wildly. Then he’ll go quiet. “You know something, Tommy,” he’ll say. “I’m
just calling to say you’re the best guy I know.”
“So are you,” I reply. We both laugh. Then, he’ll ask what I’m eating for dinner and wrap up
telling me he’ll call back at a specific time.
This conversation has been repeated for years. No matter what’s going on in the world, these calls
are something I can count on. In my darkest moments—painful breakups, professional setbacks—that
phone call rolls in, allowing me to escape reality for a bit and just laugh and act like a kid again.
Though he can’t understand my adult life or daily struggles, his love remains unshakable. This love is
an incredible gift. Whenever I’m struggling for life, I know George will call, telling me I’m the best
guy through his phone calls.
24.What can we know about George
A.He is a life guide just like me. B.He tries to keep in touch with me.
C.He is a physically disabled man. D.He wants an advanced smartphone.
25.Why does the author value George’s calls
A.They provide practical advice B.They help improve his acting skills.
4
C.They keep him updated on family news. D.They offer consistent emotional support.
26.What does the underlined phrase “wrap up” mean in Paragraph 5
A.End up. B.Bring up. C.Show up. D.Pick up.
27.What does the passage intend to tell us
A.Role-play bonds family. B.Family love is unshakable.
C.Calls make a difference. D.Disabled people brave all.

Adults should prioritize book reading, which helps promote mental health, according to a global
study conducted in 2023. Researchers surveyed 15,000 participants aged 25-60 across 25 countries,
combining questionnaires with cognitive tests. The findings highlight alarming trends and solutions.
In the past decade, weekly reading rates dropped sharply. Only 33% of adults read books weekly,
compared to 51% in 2013. Chinese adults demonstrated slightly higher engagement, with 38% reading
printed books monthly—higher than the global average of 29%. However, 63% admitted to spending
over 3.5 hours daily on short video or social media. European nations like Italy and Spain mirrored this
pattern, where 68% cited “exhaustion from work” as the primary barrier.
Regular readers demonstrated significant advantages. Those dedicating over 5 hours weekly to
books scored 28% higher in memory and problem-solving assessments. Emotionally, 43% of frequent
readers reported effective stress management techniques, versus 19% among non-readers. Brain scans
showed that sustained reading strengthens neural pathways in the prefrontal cortex (大脑前额叶皮层),
which governs decision-making. Dr. Helen Park, a neurologist from Yale, explains: “Deep reading acts
as cognitive training, much like lifting weights for the mind.”
Cultural divides appeared in content preferences. Asian readers prioritized educational
materials—58% chose history, science, or career-related books. In contrast, 61% of Western
participants favored fiction for relaxation. Digital adoption also varied: e-books accounted for 70% of
adult reading in the U. S. and U. K., while 76% of Asian readers preferred printed books. Researchers
link this to cultural traditions; for instance, China’s book-friendly society concept emphasizes tactile
(触觉的) and visual engagement with texts.
The study proposes actionable strategies. Governments are urged to launch workplace reading
initiatives—companies like Siemens and Huawei now offer 20-minute paid “reading breaks” daily,
5
observing 15-20% productivity increases. Schools should inspire parental reading through community
programs. “Reading isn’t a luxury—it’s a lifelong health investment,” insists Dr. Carlos Mendez, the
study’s lead author. “Even 12 minutes daily builds mental resilience (恢复力) across lifetimes.”
28.What method did researchers use to study reading’s impact on the brain
A.Interviews with educators. B.Analysis of book sales data.
C.Social media usage tracking. D.Brain scans and cognitive tests.
29.Why might Chinese readers prefer printed books
A.Limited access to e-books. B.Influence of traditional values.
C.Lower costs of printed materials. D.Government restrictions on digital content.
30.How does Dr. Carlos Mendez view reading
A.As a luxury for the wealthy. B.As a popular trend in society.
C.As a way to restore mental power. D.As a substitute for physical exercise.
31.Which is the best title for the text
A.Reading Decline: Causes and Fixes
B.Work Stress: The Main Barrier to Reading
C.Digital Books vs. Paper Books: A Global Debate
D.Short Videos: The Killer of Traditional Reading
D
The idea that too much screen time and digital dependence might harm our cognitive abilities—
often called “digital dementia (痴呆)”—has been debated since psychiatrist Manfred Spitzer coined the
term in 2012. Critics argue that outsourcing memory (like relying on smartphones for contact details)
and passive media consumption, such as endless scrolling, could weaken mental sharpness. But is this
really true, especially for older adults who have witnessed the digital revolution firsthand
A major 2024 study published in Nature Human Behaviour analyzed data from over 411,000
adults aged 50 and above. Surprisingly, it found that regular use of computers, smartphones, and the
Internet was associated with a 58% lower risk of cognitive decline—a stronger protective effect than
even physical exercise or maintaining healthy blood pressure.
This doesn’t mean technology directly prevents dementia, but it suggests that staying digitally
engaged may help keep the brain active. Learning new apps, resolving tech issues, and even online
6
socializing could function like mental workouts, strengthening cognitive resilience (恢复力). In fact,
technology aids instead of harming because it offers mental stimulation, enhances social connection,
and boosts independence via problem-solving.
While this study is a relief, not all tech use is equal in its effects. Passive activities, like binge
watching TV, may not offer the same benefits as interactive tasks, such as video calls or online learning.
Additionally, too much screen time in younger people has been linked to attention problems and poor
sleep—which could have long-term effects.
As AI and brain-computer interfaces advance, older adults may gain even more tools to support
cognition, from memory aids to virtual social companions. However, balance remains key. The best
approach Use technology actively—learn, connect, and problem-solve—rather than just consume.
For now, older adults shouldn’t fear “digital dementia.” Instead, thoughtful tech use might be one
of the best ways to keep their minds sharp in the digital age.
32.What does the 2024 study reveal about “digital dementia” compared with the popular idea
A.It draws a contrary conclusion. B.It agrees with Manfred Spitzer’ theory.
C.It only occurs in older adults. D.It equals the effect of physical workouts.
33.Why can active digital use reduce the risk of cognitive decline
A.It can prolong our life. B.It can activate our brain.
C.It can solve tricky issues. D.It can enhance our ability.
34.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.Reliability of the new study. B.Negative effects on the young.
C.Downsides of passive tech use. D.Contrast between two tech uses.
35.What does the author suggest the elderly do in the last two paragraphs
A.Relieve their fear quickly. B.Get more tools to sharpen cognition.
C.Consume technology simply. D.Make considered use of modern tech.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Sadhana had been living with Mr. and Mrs. Acharya for over six months. As a first-year
engineering student in a new city, she found a home away from home with the retired couple, who took
her in as a paying guest. Their warmth and kindness eased the pain of being away from her family for
the first time.
Mr. Acharya, a retired economist, was especially helpful with her studies, going through her
notes for hours, offering detailed advice, and patiently breaking down complex concepts with
real-world examples. His guidance not only improved her grades but also made her academic journey
more enjoyable.
However, her birthday was different. Despite the Acharyas’ care, she felt deeply sad, missing her
family terribly. Special days like birthdays were meant to be spent with loved ones, and being far away
left a gap in her heart.
Sitting in the living room, Sadhana softly expressed her longing. “I miss my family so much
11
today,” she said, her voice heavy with sadness. Mrs. Acharya, understanding her pain, replied, “We
know it’s tough, dear. Being away from family on special days can be really hard.” Sadhana managed a
small smile, grateful for their company, but her heart ached.
During dinner, though the food was delicious, she struggled to enjoy it, her mind filled with
memories of past birthdays with her family. She remembered how her younger sisters would jump
around, eager to give her handmade cards, and how her grandmother would give a piece of her favorite
candy to her. Most of all, she thought of her mother’s mango cake—a tradition since she was a child.
Just the thought of its sweet flavor made her feel emotional.
Unknown to Sadhana, two weeks earlier, Mrs. Acharya had secretly dialed her mother’s number.
“We want to make her birthday special,” she said. “Could you tell me how to make her favorite cake ”
The conversation lasted only half an hour, but it planted the seed for the surprise. Mrs. Acharya had
spent days testing recipes, determined to recreate the taste of home.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

After dinner, Mrs. Acharya led Sadhana into the kitchen. There, on the counter, was a beautiful mango cake
with “Happy Birthday, Sadhana” written in bright letters. Overwhelmed, Sadhana asked in disbelief, “You baked
this for me ” Mrs. Acharya nodded, and Sadhana hugged her tightly, her body trembling with a mix of surprise
and joy. Mr. Acharya then joined them with a bottle of freshly made mango juice. “To Sadhana and to making
wonderful memories, even when you are far from home,” he said.
Having drunk a cup of mango juice, Sadhana took a bite of the cake. The first mouthful made her freeze—
this flavor was surprisingly familiar, just like her mother’s recipe. After hearing about the careful efforts Mrs.
Acharya had made to bake the perfect birthday cake, she was moved to tears, overcome by her thoughtfulness.
That birthday, away from her family, became a deeply memorable and heartwarming experience, a testament to
the love Sadhana had felt with the Acharyas.

M: You’re joking. We’ll get sunburned on a day like this. It would be awful.
W: Lots of people go there. I saw a family fishing there yesterday. Do you have a better idea
M:⑨Let’s have a game of basketball in the park.
W:⑨Oh no, it’s far too hot today. The best time to do exercise is later in the day, when it’s cooler.
M:⑩Maybe we could just have a walk in the park and then stop for something to eat at the cafe there.
W:⑩OK. Let’s go.

M: Scary, isn’t it
W: What You mean the food
M: No, starting university.
W: Oh, I have a totally different view. It’s an excitement for me indeed.
M: That’s one way of looking at it. I’m Phil, by the way.
W: I’m Holly. Pleased to meet you. What do you think of the cafeteria
M: It’s nice, at least giving us a place to eat well.
W: I don’t think I can afford to eat here all the time. I’ll have to start making my own food.
M: Yes, me too. Now, that will be a challenge, because I haven’t really done much cooking before.
W: You’ll get used to it. If you’re clever enough to come to university, I’m sure you can make it.
M: I suppose so. What are you studying
W: History. I hope it will be interesting. What about you
M: I really want to learn Physics. But I changed my mind at last and followed my parents’ advice, choosing
Maths instead.
W: Oh, you must be very smart.
M: Well, it’s just the way my mind works.
W: Oh, time for dinner. See you later.

M: OK, bye.

M: In the Internet age nowadays, there are so many different websites we can visit. What is your favorite
website and why
W: Well, although there are various choices, I’d definitely say YouTube. It has great content. I like to read
news on it. It provides me with the latest news from all over the world.
M: You kidding ! I cannot stand YouTube. There are advertisements all the time. It really ruins the
experience for me.
W: I agree with you. That is the only problem with it. Especially when an advertisement appears between what
you are watching, it is annoying. However, it can recommend what you like according to your browsing
history. That’s my favorite feature. What is your favorite then
M: I prefer Vimeo for videos. For music, I use Beatport a lot. It specializes in electronic music. It is
updated fast. But there is one thing that I think can be improved.
W: In what way
M: Well, you can’t hear a full song on the website. I’d like that to change.
W: That’s a good point. Maybe you should try to contact them.
M: I guess so.
Text 10
W: Japanese children may soon have smiles on their faces and money in their pockets. Japan’s
government is planning to give $880 to all children under the age of 19. Around 20 million children, from
newborns to 18-year-olds, will receive the one-time payment. The new plan is part of an election promise
from Japan’s newly-elected Prime Minister. He promised to help “people in need”, such as part-time workers
and families with small children. Officials say the money will be given without considering the financial
situation of a child’s family. All children in any one family will receive the money. The plan is expected to
cost around $17.6 billion. However, many people have doubts about spending so much money when Japan has
so much debt. The country’s debt is currently more than twice the size of its economy. Also, some people
said most of those who received it would not go out to buy high-cost items, eat in restaurants or take
holidays in Japan. It is predicted that much of the money will end up in savings accounts. However, Yuki
Ono, a mother of three, welcomed the plan. She said her children would be able to buy new computers.
