Every day at 7 am, the boy, Shang Zhipeng, 15, and his mother Jiang Feifei wait for Bus 73 at its starting station. The driver, Mei Meng, helps Shang get on the bus and takes him to a seat. The Three Gorges Dam (三峡大坝), lying on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province, is one of the largest and most amazing engineering projects in the world. It stands proudly between the beautiful mountains of Xiling Gorge, showing the wisdom and hard work of the Chinese people.
The Yangtze River, China’s longest river, often caused serious floods in the past, bringing disasters to millions of people. To solve this problem and create clean energy, the Chinese government decided to build a huge dam.
People began to build the Three Gorges Dam in 1994. And it took over 12 years to complete. Thousands of workers used modern machines and technology to make this dream come true. They moved mountains, changed the river’s path (路径) to build the dam, which is about 2.3 kilometers long and 185 meters high—as tall as a 60-story building!
Today, the dam plays a key role in China. It has greatly reduced flood risks, protecting cities and farm lands. The dam’s power stations produce clean electricity for millions of homes and factories, helping reduce air pollution. Its connected vessel system (连通器系统) helps ships pass. Ships enter a lock (水闸) and gates close. Water level inside the lock rises or falls to match the next section. When the water levels become the same, gates open, and the ship moves to the next lock.
The Three Gorges Dam is not just a dam—it’s a symbol of China’s courage and creativity. Visitors from around the world come to see this modern wonder. Students learn about its scientific achievements and the spirit of teamwork behind it. The dam teaches us that with determination (决心), humans can overcome even the most difficult challenges of nature.

Do you think your friends are as close as family members Have you ever wondered why some friendships feel as close as family Research has shown that genetics (遗传学) might play a role in choosing your closest friends.
According to a US study with 1,932 people, friends have a kinship coefficient (亲缘系数) that is 0.0014 higher than that of strangers! The kinship coefficient is an easy way to see how genetically related two people are—the higher the number the closer the relation.
Don’t look down on this number. The kinship coefficient between parents and children is about 0.25. For first cousins, it’s about 0.0625, while for fourth cousins, it’s around only 0.001. This means you might share more genes (基因) with your best friends than with some distant (遥远的) family members. The question is—why are people with a high level of the kinship coefficient more likely to become friends The research team found that in the most similar 1% of genes between friends, many are connected to the sense of smell. This sounds really amazing.
A study in Science Advances also showed that people who become close friends usually have similar body smells. Researchers collected sweat samples (汗液样本) from 20 pairs of friends. These pairs of friends all became close in a short time. Researchers used a special electronic device (设备) called an “e-nose” and invited human volunteers to study the smells. They found that friends’ body odors (气味) were more alike than those of strangers. So, next time when you hug your friends, you might notice that the smell on them is kind of similar to yours!
Meanwhile, there are also other reasons that influence friendship, such as social environment and educational background. Friendship is not just related to genetics. We can also actively choose our friends.
31.How does the writer lead into the topic in Paragraph 1
A. By asking questions. B. By listing numbers.
C. By telling stories. D. By showing examples
32.What’s the probable relationship between the kinship coefficient (x) and the closeness or relation (y)
A. B.
C. D.
33.What is the kinship coefficient for fourth cousins
A. 0.25. B. 0.0625. C. 0.001. D. 0.0014.
34.What does the underlined word “those” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. Kinship coefficients. B. Body odors.
C. Sweat samples. D. Electronic devices.
35.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage
A. To express the importance of the smell in friendship.
B. To describe how researchers study people’s body smells.
C. To show that genes may help people become close friends.
D. To tell the differences between friends and strangers’ genes.

36.Giving gifts during the holidays has been a tradition for thousands of years. Many children don’t buy gifts because they don’t have money, but some of the best gifts are free. If you want to give meaningful gifts to family and friends without spending money, here are some ideas.
First, consider who will receive your gift. What do they like What hobbies do they have If they enjoy music, you could make a playlist (歌单) or gather family members for a small performance. If they love sweets, you could bake them a treat.
Second, it’s a special idea to make a memory gift like a photo collage (照片拼贴). With an adult’s help, print out pictures of good memories with the person, then glue them onto thick paper. Another idea is to write a letter to the person. You could also record a video message sharing a happy memory.
Also, spending time with loved ones is one of the best gifts. You can make simple “tickets” for fun activities like hiking, watching a movie or playing a game together. Another idea is to volunteer with them, such as cleaning a park or helping at an animal home.
You can also give the gift of helping out. Write down different chores on cards, like cooking dinner, walking the dog, or shoveling snow and then place them in a jar. The person can pick a task when they need help.
