Du Fu (712AD—770AD), one of the greatest poets in China, is familiar to most of us. However, Du has remained largely unknown in the Western world.
The BBC’s one-hour documentary (纪录片) Du Fu: China’s Greatest Poet introduces the great poet to Western audiences. As the first English-language documentary about Du, it compares him to Dante and Shakespeare, two of the greatest literature (文学) masters of the West.
In the documentary, British historian Michael Wood explores the poet’s life. He visits a number of places, such as the poet’s birthplace of Gongyi in Henan Province and the Du Fu Thatched Cottage (杜甫草堂) in Chengdu, Sichuan, where Du used to live. Along the way, he meets and talks to people who help to tell the fascinating stories of the poet. The documentary also includes interviews with scholars (学者) and recitals (朗诵) of Du’s works by British actor Sir Ian McKellen, who is known for performing Shakespeare’s works.
The documentary explains why Du’s works have been popular for centuries. “Chinese people really value the recording of history and Du Fu is better than anyone at reflecting (反映) history in his poetry. That’s because historical events are mirrored in his own life and spiritual (精神的) journey,”said Zeng Xiangbo, a professor at Renmin University.
Du lived under the rule of the Tang Emperor Xuanzong (712AD—756AD), a time of prosperity (繁荣). He was a civil servant (文职人员) in the Tang court (朝廷). But as the An Lushan Rebellion of 755AD floored the empire, he escaped, took his family on the road as refugees (难民), and they suffered starvation (饥饿) and poverty. Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing, pouring out his concerns for his country and people, as well as celebrating the simple joys of life. Known as China’s “Saint of Poetry”, he wrote about 1, 500 poems that are still with us today.

One day, while his mother was out hunting, the gray cub (幼兽) found the way out of the cave. At first, it was too bright after the half-dark of the cave. But slowly he learned to focus on the trees, the other bank of the stream and the sky.
He was afraid. But the need to know and understand was greater than his fear, so he went out. He soon discovered that the floor of the world was not flat like the floor of the cave. And he fell, rolling down the slope (斜坡) outside the lair (兽穴). He lay at the bottom yelping in fear.
But he soon sat up, and started walking and looking around him. He met a squirrel, and a woodpecker, both of which moved away from him. So he learned that the world had things that stayed in one place, and other things that moved. And the more he walked, the better he walked.
He had beginner’s luck when he fell into a ptarmigan’s (雷鸟) nest. In the nest were seven chicks. He knew this was meat, like what his mother gave him. So he ate them all.
As he walked away from the nest, the mother ptarmigan attacked him. He fought back, biting her wing with his small teeth, while she pecked him. He was excited and happy. He pulled the bird out into the open. He was fighting for meat, fighting to kill. It was what wolves did.
Then he left the ptarmigan free and rested. As he watched her, something rushed down from above him, picked up the ptarmigan and flew back up into the sky. It was a hawk.
He was learning. Live things were meat, but if they were big enough, live things could also hurt. It was better to eat small live things.
Later something small jumped in front of him, so he put his paw on it. It was a young weasel (鼬鼠). It made strange noise, and soon the mother weasel appeared. She jumped at his neck and bit him with sharp teeth. She wasn’t big, but he didn’t know how dangerous weasels were.
Suddenly she jumped, and bit into his throat. He tried to fight, but the weasel held on. The cub was sure to die, but luckily his mother, the she-wolf, heard his frightened calls and came to save him.The she-wolf took the weasel in her mouth and threw it up into the air, catching it in her teeth and killing it. The cub and mother licked each other happily, then they ate the weasel and went back to the cave and slept.

The 2026 Government Work Report clearly states that China will support qualified (符合条件的) areas to promote spring and autumn holidays for primary and secondary school students, while carrying out the staggered paid leave system for workers. As a heated topic, the policy has been piloted (试点) in provinces such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Sichuan with valuable experience.
These short holidays bring great benefits to students. They can reduce study pressure after long periods of learning and help students stay healthy both physically and mentally. With mild and pleasant weather, students can step out of classrooms to take part in practical activities, including farming experiences, nature observation and local cultural learning. In this way, textbook knowledge is turned into real-life experience.
The holidays also bring advantages to families. Staggered leave allows parents to spend quality time with their children at lower costs, away from the crowds of peak travel seasons. Many families choose to travel, visit relatives or visit museums together, strengthening family bonds. Meanwhile, the holidays help develop local tourism and economy, creating a win-win situation for education and society.
However, challenges still exist in the policy’s implementation (实施). The main problem is that many working parents cannot look after their children during the holidays. To address this, many schools offer childcare services with colorful activities, and local communities offer more programs for students. The holidays can also be set flexibly according to local conditions.
In short, spring and autumn holidays for primary and secondary school students are an important educational innovation. They signal a shift from exam-centered education towards a focus on all-round development. With joint efforts from families, schools and society, these holidays will help students grow in a healthier and more meaningful way.

66.Two weeks after getting out of the caves, the judge told Tom, “Nobody will get lost in those caves again. I’ve closed the caves with big metal doors and three locks.”
Tom turned as white as a piece of paper. “Oh, Judge, Indian Joe’s in the caves!” As a result, Indian Joe lay dead on the floor. Tom finally felt safe.
The next day Tom and Huck talked about the money they had seen. Huck said someone else must have taken it from Indian Joe’s room in the tavern.
“Huck, I bet the money’s in the caves! Will you go there with me and get it out ”
“I will if we get in and don’t get lost.”
“That’s no problem. Just through the entrance that only I know about, we can get into the caves.”
So the boys started their treasure-hunt adventure. They went down the river, entered the secret hole and crawled to the far end of the tunnel. They tied their string to a rock and moved on. They soon got to the place where Tom saw Indian Joe that night. The boys went carefully over to the place. They found a small bed of blankets by a large rock but there was no money-box.
“Look, Huck. There’re footprints and some candle wax on this side of the rock, but not on the other sides. I’m sure the money is under the rock. I’m going to dig.”
Tom took out his knife, started digging and hit wood. He lifted the piece of wood and found a large hole. So they climbed inside it and found the treasure box, about $12,000, which was shared by them both.
Now Widow Douglas gave Huck a home though Huck wasn’t used to the comfortable but regular life. However, to be a member of Tom Sawyer’s Gang, Huck decided to try the new life again.
