After class, as Wang Xueru quietly packed up while standing the serious pain, a student approached her. Without a word, the girl handed Wang a small piece of paper, reading “If the sky is cloudy, I will be your sunshine.” In that moment, Wang felt her tiredness and pain disappear — replaced by quiet, warm care between a young volunteer teacher and her student in a classroom in Mengla county, Yunnan province.
From the moment Wang entered university, her dream was clear: she wanted to serve. From her first year at college, she immersed herself in volunteerism. Thanks to her growing volunteer experience, Wang became a volunteer teacher.
When arriving in Mengla county, Wang was anxious about whether she could truly teach well. Then, the first challenge came. “The hardest time was after our first exams, when the results were terrible,” Wang said. Later she got some teaching ideas from the classic book Dream of the Red Chamber, such as encouraging through praise, teaching them to use knowledge in real life, and trying to build an equal relationship with them.
These ways helped the children not only settle down to study but also become more ready to think on their own and answer actively in class. Eight months later, the results spoke for themselves. When she started, both of her classes were at the bottom of the grade. Now, one of the classes she leads has climbed to third place.
The magic, however, wasn’t just in test scores. Many students invite her to the New Year celebrations, hoping to take her to their homes for dinners, and share their hopes and dreams. Some, encouraged by her, have set big goals for themselves.
As Wang looked back on her experience, one word comes to mind: warmth. “I want to be a teacher with warmth, with depth. And here, I found that the warmth goes both ways. The more I gave, the more love I received. That’s the real power of volunteer teaching.”

In a summer, twelve people walked into a room designed to test the limits of human survival. Equipped with heart rate monitors and temperature probes (探头), they waited in temperatures of 42℃, coating their bodies in sweat. After several hours, their body temperatures began climbing, as the heat cooked them from the outside in.
“Few people have actually experienced temperatures like this,” said Robert Meade, a researcher who led the study. “Imagine the skin like a glass of water on a hot day. That’s how hot it was.” Their experiment tested the body’s ability to deal with extreme heat by exposing (暴露) joiners to temperatures at which they could no longer cool themselves. Their study showed that this dangerous threshold (阈值) is much lower than scientists had thought before: a so-called wet bulb temperature (湿球温度), which considers heat and humidity (湿度).
For over ten years, it was widely believed that the highest wet bulb temperature that bodies could handle was 35℃. It wasn’t until 2022 that a group of researchers found that things could get dangerous much sooner. This threshold means that most areas of the planet could become dangerous to live in with 2℃ of global warming. “With a warming climate, we expect that those thresholds will start to be broken more often,” said Tony Wolf, a professor at the University of Georgia. “The heat waves are larger and they last longer.”
The rising heat has already caused serious harm. Between 1999 and 2023, the number of people dying from high temperatures in the United States has more than doubled, from about 1,000 per year to over 2,000. During the same time, nearly a quarter-million people have died from heat worldwide. “People already die from heat waves now,” Wolf said. “So no matter how the climate changes in the future, it’s important to understand — right now — what these thresholds are, above which we start to see greater danger of heat-related illness and death.”
8. What is the purpose of the experiment in Paragraph 1?
A. To prove skin’s cooling ability.
B. To record body temperature data.
C. To compare different heat thresholds.
D. To test human survival limits in heat.
9. What do we know about the dangerous threshold?
A. Scientists found it was lower in 2022.
B. It only exists in Georgia.
C. 35℃ is the new dangerous level.
D. It remained unchanged for 10 years.
10. What does the data in the last paragraph show?
A. Fewer people care about heat dangers.
B. Much more people die from heat now.
C. Global warming causes all heat deaths.
D. Heat kills 2,000 people yearly in the US.
11. What is Tony Wolf’s idea about studying thresholds?
A. It needs quick action.
B. It is not necessary now.
C. It brings no useful results.
D. It depends on future studies.

Dogs have been a part of human society for over 20,000 years. Whereas they first served people by supporting hunters, it did not take long before they became part of the home. Companion dogs might not help secure food, but for years evidence has mounted that they help diminish anxiety and improve sociality. Research led by Kikusui Takefumi at Azabu University, published recently in iScience, explains what might be going on. It reveals that the microbes (微生物)found in the guts (肠道)of dog owners are apparently different from those who do not own dogs and that this is, at least partially, responsible for the behavioral differences.
The brain does not exist on its own. The microbes found elsewhere, particularly in the gut, produce chemical compounds (化合物)that influence how the brain works. With this in mind, Dr Kikusui wondered if microbe transfer from dogs might be helping bring psychological benefits to owners. Keen to find out, he set up an experiment with 343 participants in Tokyo, focusing specifically on teenagers, as adolescence is a crucial period of brain development when social interactions often have lasting mental effects. He and his colleagues therefore psychologically analysed 96 teens who were dog owners and 247 teens who were not. As expected, dog owners suffered from fewer social problems.
The next step would have been to introduce dog-associated microbes directly into the bodies of non-dog-owning teenagers. Since that is an ethically grey area, Dr Kikusui worked instead with mice. After six weeks, mice carrying microbes from dog-owning teens spent longer approaching unfamiliar mice and showed greater concern for troubled cage-mates.
Dr Kikusui admits that making direct comparisons between mice and humans is far from perfect, but his findings nonetheless indicate that the microbiotic changes brought about by dog ownership influence the brain. If the conclusions hold, it seems that the path to a healthier mind may begin not with careful self-reflection, but with the companionship of dogs.
12. What does the underlined word “diminish” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Overcome. B. Replace. C. Balance. D. Reduce.
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The differences between teenage dog owners and non-owners.
B. The design and participant selection of the experiment.
C. The biological basis and motivation for the research.
D. The role of gut microbes in shaping brain activity.
14. Why did the researchers conduct experiments on mice?
A. Dog owners show fewer social problems.
B. Teenagers were more difficult to study directly.
C. Human experiments may raise ethical concerns.
D. Mice can behave more actively in group interaction.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Mouse-human comparisons may have limits in brain research.
B. Spending time with dogs may contribute to mental well-being.
C. Developing a healthy mind depends on careful self-reflection.
D. Psychological health requires changes in biological systems.

第二节 (满分15分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段结尾,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Most of us never forget the person that was there for us in our darkest times. Apparently, penguins (企鹅) don’t either.
On a typical day, off the coast of a small Brazilian island, Joao Pereira was heading out fishing. He was disheartened to find that an oil leak had polluted the waters. Staring out at the oily waves, he decided it was not a good day to fish. But walking on the beach that day, he found a struggling penguin, covered in oil and starving.
Joao took the penguin home, gently cleaned it and spent the next week nursing it back to health. He named it Dindim, a Portuguese word meaning “ice pop.” Dindim is a Magellanic penguin, a species known for living in the seas of South America. In order to breed (繁殖), they must return to Patagonia, 5,000 miles from Joao’s home.
After a week of rehabilitation (康复), Joao patiently took Dindim back to the ocean and taught it how to swim again. Soon enough, it was time for Dindim to return to life in the wild. Joao took Dindim out into the sea by boat and dropped it off to encourage it to swim back to its home. But when he was back to shore, he found the penguin waiting for him. Joao made two more attempts later, but each time the bird would just swim back to Joao’s home. It seemed that Dindim had already formed a family bond with his rescuer and wouldn’t leave.
Joao had no choice but to keep the little creature. The following months saw their getting closer. Dindim would follow behind Joao to fish on the coast joyfully. It also liked to stay close to Joao, letting Joao give it showers, allowing Joao to feed it fish and to pick it up. Joao and his family enjoyed the company of Dindim. But deep inside Joao’s heart, he knew Dindim belonged to the wild. Gradually, the hot summer days saw Dindim change its coat with new feathers. Was it time to say goodbye?
One morning, Joao found the bird disappeared. “Has it really left?” Joao wondered. Sorrow mixed with joy, he stared at the empty nest, picked up a few feathers, and murmured while tucking them into a jar: “It’s grown up — off to breed, as it should.”
注意:1.续写词数应为100左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
A few months later, Joao heard some familiar cries in his backyard.

Dear fellow students,
Considering that many stray animals living tough lives not only face hunger and cold but also suffer from ever-present dangers, these animals desperately need our help.
Only by taking action can we truly make a difference. If considering a pet, adopt from the street or a shelter rather than buy. Moreover, it is a better choice for us to provide food and water in safe areas and volunteering at rescue centers for unadoptable animals. Equally important is raising awareness among friends and family about not abandoning pets.
Small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact. Let’s unite in the upcoming “Care for Strays” activity to build a warmer, kinder community for all living beings.

答案】
A few months later, Joao heard some familiar cries in his backyard. Rushing out, he couldn’t believe his eyes — there was Dindim, waddling toward him with obvious excitement. Its feathers were shiny and neat, a clear sign it had thrived in the wild. Joao knelt down, and Dindim immediately nuzzled his hand, just like it used to. Later, Joao noticed Dindim wasn’t alone; three smaller, fluffy penguins followed closely behind it. It seemed Dindim had not only returned to say hello but also introduced its new family. From then on, Dindim would come back every year, bringing its loved ones to visit the human who had once saved its life, a warm reminder that kindness is always repaid.
