We just moved into a small house. Our old house was beautiful and huge. What about our home now Half the size and crowded. There were still boxes everywhere.
The day after the move, while the kids were in school, I dealt with some boxes and hung the family photo on the wall. But it just didn’t feel like home. Maybe I could make some chocolate cookies, just like my grandma used to do whenever I needed cheering up. When I added eggs to my mixer(搅拌机), it suddenly stopped working. I felt like crying. What would my grandma do I didn’t think Grandma would give up easily. So I ran to the boxes. I found Grandma’s old white mixer there! She’d bought it back in the 1950s and it was, well, ancient. I turned the switch (开关) on… nothing. The old mixer was just like my life these days.
“Come on, try again,” a small voice in my mind said. I turned the switch back on. Surprisingly, the mixer started to work slowly! Two hours later, the kids opened the door. “Cookies! Thank you, Mum,” they jumped excitedly. For the first time, our new house felt like home.
Maybe this house wasn’t as big as our old one. But then again, maybe home wasn’t where we lived. It was where we shared the sweet moments—like a broken mixer that came back to life when I needed comfort (安慰) most.

① Yu Opera is one of the five main operas in China. It is the country’s leading local opera with the largest number of performers. In its early stage, it had another name Henan Clapper Opera (“Henan bangzi”). It was only after the 1950s that Yu Opera became its official title. Yu Opera is welcomed in Henan and other provinces, including Hebei, Shandong and Hubei, making it one of the most popular operas in China.
② Yu Opera took shape during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties in Henan Province. In the beginning, it was only a simple performance without any music or make-up (化妆). After 1911, Yu Opera was performed in famous teahouses in the cities, where it could compete with Beijing Opera. Later, there were troupes (剧团) of Yu Opera in China. So a large number of new dramas were created, leading the Yu Opera to a new level.
③Tunes(曲调)are important for Yu Opera. The rising and falling voices and strong feelings made Yu Opera well-known. The four major tunes of Yu Opera include Xiangfu Tune which is always performed in Kaifeng; Yudong Tune which is liked around Shangqiu; Yuxi Tune which is local to Luoyang and Shahe Tune which is most used along the Shahe River.
④ Besides, in traditional Yu Opera, lots of bright colours are used to make a great comparison, which can clearly show the personalities (性格) of the characters. Besides colours, materials can do the same job. The clothes show the age, social position and thoughts of the characters, so different characters wear differently.

① The ocean is not a quiet place. This is partly caused by sea animals. They use sound to find what they eat, whom they play with, or which place they move towards. But the noise from human activities is increasingly troubling the lives of ocean animals.
② According to scientists, loud noise may increase mass strandings (大规模搁浅) of sea animals. Researchers recorded only five of these events in the first half of the 20th century. From 1950 to 2004, they recorded more than 1,200 mass strandings. This is perhaps because of the use of sonar (声呐) underwater. Another main reason of loud underwater noise is pile driving (打桩). Piles are supports for bridges and oil and gas-producing areas. They’re driven deep into the floor of the ocean. Driving a single pile can take several hours and result in as many as 5,000 hits. This process creates a lot of noise.
③ To restrain(控制)that noise, some companies are making use of tiny bubbles. A single bubble is easily broken. However, the bubble wall can make pile driving quieter. The bubble wall is usually created in this way: A tube(管子) is placed in a ring around a pile. Air is then let out through closely-spaced openings in the tube. When the bubbles rise, they act as a wall and take in some of the noise. Some more of the sound reflects back and becomes stuck inside the wall. Such bubble walls are really helpful.
④ Other changes to pile driving can help as well. For example, people can take breaks during pile driving and let animals travel through.
Our noise in the ocean is causing big problems. But small changes in our behaviours can make a big difference to animals’ lives in the world’s oceans.
What is troubling the lives of ocean animals according to the text
A. The gas produced in the sea.
B. The food polluted by humans.
C. The noise from human activities.
D. The bubble walls made by some companies.
What does the underlined word “they” refer to
A. Researchers.
B. Mass strandings.
C. Sea animals.
D. Piles.
Which paragraphs show how humans make changes to pile driving
A. ①②
B. ③④
C. ①③
D. ②④
What’s the best title for the text
A. Know why ocean noise forms
B. Learn more about sea animals

What’s your dream job How much do you know about it A group of students from Tianjin found a problem among young teenagers: Most of them have little idea about their career (职业) plans, as there is too little help from schools or families.
To offer teenagers helpful career guidance (指导), the students from Tianjin TEDA No. 1 Middle School started a project called “Dian Zhi Cheng Shi (点职成诗)”. “Our survey shows that seventy-two percent of students want to know more about different jobs. Doctors, accountants (会计) and lawyers are the top three,” said Wang Xinran, the project leader.
Based on students’ needs, the team interviewed thirty-two professionals in different fields and posted their interviews on social media. Professionals share true stories behind each job, allowing students to learn about the jobs more deeply.
“We also invited the professionals to give speeches in our school so that students could talk to them face to face,” said Wang.
Team member Lyu Jinyan said his most impressive interview was with a photographer. “I used to think being a photographer was cool and romantic(浪漫的). But now I know that photographers need to deal with lots of problems, such as a sudden change of weather, damage to equipment(设备) and communication with different people,” he said.
But the project doesn’t mean to disappoint students by telling them the truth. “We want to show the professionals’ passion (热情) and persistence rather than the bad sides,” said group member Zhao Yajie.
