Wang Yongxian, who was born in 1950 in Taiyuan, the capital of north China’s Shanxi Province, is a Chinese expert in the restoration of ancient Chinese buildings. Since 1972, Wang has restored over 100 precious ancient buildings.
At the age of 22, Wang joined the cultural relics working committee of Shanxi Province working on surveys, mapping, and restoration of ancient buildings. For years, he roamed the wilderness, devoting himself to the preservation of temples and pagodas (佛塔).
At that time, many valuable historical buildings had suffered severe damage from natural elements, leaving them ruined and on the edge of collapse. Wang saw himself as a “firefighter” on the front lines, racing against time to rescue these structures.
In his early 20s, Wang once dreamed of a more attractive city life and even considered changing jobs. But witnessing the devotion and sacrifice of senior experts changed his mind. One day, while accompanying Chinese architectural historian Luo Zhewen to inspect the Wooden Pagoda of Yingxian county, Wang watched as Luo — despite being in his sixties — climbed shaky beams (横梁) inside the tower without any safety railing. This commitment deeply moved him. “I must pass the mission of protecting ancient buildings to younger generations, turning our pioneers’ spirit into action,” Wang said.
Thanks to the painstaking efforts of Wang and his colleagues over the decades, an increasing number of ancient buildings across Shanxi, such as Foguang Temple, Chongfu Temple, Guandi Temple, Jinci Temple’s Shengmu Hall, and Xuankong Temple, have been revitalized and opened to the public.
After retiring from his job, Wang’s love for ancient architecture has not diminished a bit. He immersed himself in research, learned woodworking techniques, created models of Dougong, and published many monographs and papers. “I have had an inseparable bond with ancient buildings throughout my life. Israel was accused of using white phosphorus bombs (白磷弹), a banned bomb, in the Palestine-Israel conflict in October. However, the Israeli military later claimed in a statement that it didn’t use such a weapon, reported Reuters.
White phosphorus is a highly free-burning chemical that can create intense heat, light and smoke, reaching over 1,000℃ when burned. The flame it produces is difficult to put out, leading to deadly burns on the human body.
The chemical is also poisonous. Those coming into contact with it may suffer heart, kidney or bone damage. And bomb-hit areas are likely to be polluted by white phosphorus, resulting in long-term environmental damage.
The news sparked public concern about destructive weapons. International Humanitarian Law (IHL) bans any weapon “of a nature to cause overmuch injury or unnecessary suffering”. Such a weapon can cause indiscriminate harm, injuring or killing soldiers as well as civilians.
The Geneva Conventions (《日内瓦公约》) and their Additional Protocols, which form the core of International Humanitarian Law, have set requirements for all countries to follow about how wars are carried out. For example, the use, production, stockpiling (储备) and selling of biological and chemical weapons are forbidden.
Chemical weapons, such as mustard gas, are poisonous. They can cause temporary or permanent damage to people and have various effects, such as severe eye pain, breathing difficulty, and blisters (水疱) on the skin. Biological weapons, usually developed from viruses or bacteria, attack the human immune system, often with deadly consequences.
Other international conventions also have made relevant rules, which apply to the countries that have agreed to them. For example, according to the IHL database, any action expected to result in widespread, long-lasting destruction of the environment is prohibited.
“During the Vietnam War, the US military employed a highly effective defoliant (落叶剂) called Agent Orange.” Zhang Gaosheng, a researcher at China Institute of International Studies, told CCTV News. “This resulted in the destruction of about 20 percent of Vietnam’s forests, leading to significant damage to the ecosystem.” The usage of the chemical was subsequently banned, he added.

Inspired by how ants move through narrow spaces, scientists have built a robot that can pass through narrow passages, climb over steps and move on grass and loose rock.
“Insects are really a neat inspiration for designing robot systems that can perform various movement behaviors,” says Nick Gravish, a roboticist at the University of California, San Diego. Ants adapt their gesture to crawl through tiny spaces. And they aren’t disturbed by uneven earth or small obstacles. For example, their legs collapse a bit when they hit an object, and they continue to move forward quickly.
Gravish team’s robot is about 30 centimeters wide and 20 centimeters long with four wavy limbs (肢). Each limb is made up of six nested tubes that can draw into each other. What’s more, the limbs don’t need to be actively powered or adjusted to change their overall length. Instead, springs play a crucial role because they allow the legs to become short when the robot passes through a narrow space and stretch back out in an open space.
The robot can modify the width and height of its body to achieve a larger range of body sizes than other similar robots. The leg parts contracts into themselves to let the robot crawl through small tunnels and stretches out when under low ceilings. This adaptability lets the robot get into spaces as small as 72 percent its full width and 68 percent its full height. Next, the researchers plan to actively control the firmness of the springs that connect the leg parts to tune the motion to earth type without consuming too much power.
The researchers think that such small-scale, minimal robots are easy to produce and can be quickly adjusted to explore complex environments. However, the researchers think that these robots are, for now, too breakable for search-and-rescue, exploration or biological monitoring. The new robot takes a step closer to those goals, but getting there will take more time.
