Leaves will soon make their gradual change to vivid colors of yellow, orange and red as we head through the fall months, but when you can usually expect peak color to arrive depends on where you live.
When Will Fall Leaves Peak For You
— Late September or Early October: The Rockies, the northern parts of Minnesota through Michigan and a stretch from upstate New York to northern New England see peak color first.
— Mid to Late October: Potential for peak fall color advances through the Midwest into the Appalachians and much of the Northeast in mid to late October. Most other areas in the western region, including valleys, see fall’s brightest color by this time of year as well.
— November: Much of the mid-Atlantic coast and the South are the last holdouts to see peak color in November.
Why Do Leaves Change Color
A shorter amount of daylight is the primary factor for the color of the leaves to begin to change. As nights grow longer and cooler, production of the green pigment (色素) slows and eventually stops. This allows the yellow and orange pigments to shine through, revealing the many beautiful colors of fall.
What Makes A Good Colorful Season
Location matters: Higher altitudes and northern latitudes cool first, causing earlier color changes. Weather’s role: The perfect recipe includes warm, sunny days paired with cool nighttime temperatures.
Soil moisture (湿度): Sufficient soil moisture through spring and summer can help increase the chances of the colorful leaves. Wind warning: If a strong windstorm affects an area that’s near peak color, then it can tear off leaves from trees to some extent, reducing the display of peak color.
So grab your camera, plan your trip, and get ready for nature’s colorful delight!
1. When can you enjoy peak fall color in valleys of the western region
A. Late September. B. Early October. C. Late October. D. Mid November.
2. What mainly causes the change of leaf colors
A. Rainy nights in autumn. B. Reduced daylight hours.
C. Uncovered pigments. D. Rising temperature.
3. What may ruin the full display of peak color
A. The wet soil. B. The tree species.
C. The hot summer. D. The severe storm.

Several years ago, Dawn Larkin-Wallace, a mom of three, started running to lose 10 pounds to 20 pounds of baby weight that just wouldn’t go away. She thought once she dropped the weight, she’d be off the treadmill (跑步机). What she could have never imagined is that she’d become a marathon runner who inspired her three children to start running, too.
“We’re just a running family,” said Larkin-Wallace of Baldwin, New York, who is part of a running club. First, Larkin-Wallace signed up her 15-year-old daughter Kayla, a high school student, for a race after realizing that the amount of running she did during her soccer games was the equivalent (等量) of five kilometers.
With the positive pressure and the competitive spirit that exists in the household, Larkin-Wallace said with a laugh, “Of course, her brother and sister decided that that’s something they wanted to do, too.” Kimberly, 11, and Kevin Jr., 9, ran their first 5K’s this year.
Larkin-Wallace said her goal is for healthy living to become a lifestyle among her kids, who also play a range of sports from basketball to soccer. What she’s also very mindful of is encouraging her children, especially her girls, to feel good about their bodies. A recent study found that two in three 13-year-olds worry about gaining weight.
“It’s always on my mind, and I have to help my daughters understand that their body type is different from others and that the difference doesn’t make one better or more right than the other,” she said during a conversation with her family in their home. “As long as we’re healthy and taking care of ourselves, we should accept ourselves.”
The best advice for teenagers, Larkin-Wallace said, is to focus less on appearance and more on health, internal (内在的) qualities and things that your body can do, rather than how your body appears.
4. Why did Larkin-Wallace start running several years ago
A. To lose weight after having babies. B. To prepare for a marathon race.
C. To set an example to her friends. D. To join a national running club.
5. How did Kayla affect her brother and sister
A. She started a family competition. B. She inspired them to take up running.
C. She allowed them to play at home. D. She advised them to exercise indoors.
6. What did Larkin-Wallace encourage her kids to do
A. Break their bad habits at home. B. Win honors as much as possible.
C. Accept their bodies as they are. D. Compare their bodies with others’.
7. What is Larkin-Wallace’s suggestion for teenagers
A. Put health above looks. B. Keep a balanced lifestyle.
C. Focus on their appearance. D. Create a caring environment.

Imagine staying in the icy wilderness of Antarctica, cut off from the rest of the world, with only a small group of scientists. Such a group might be expected to develop a culture of its own, but would that develop a new shared accent
As part of the project to explain the spoken accent development, a group of researchers led by Jonathan Harrington, professor of phonetics and speech processing at the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich, started the study. The researchers studied a group of 11 scientists spending six months on an island just west of the Antarctic Peninsula.
The scientists were from several countries, including the US, the UK, Iceland and Germany. As part of the study, they had to record themselves reading a list of vocabularies from a computer screen every few weeks. The list included words with vowel (元音) sounds /i:/, /u:/ and / / that have been found to change over time in different English accents.
The recordings were then sent to researchers. When the recordings were studied, the researchers found that the pronunciation of words with an / / sound— such as “flow,”“code” and “sew”— had changed a little over the six months. The scientists began to pronounce it more toward the front of their mouths than toward the back. (British pronunciations are already typically fronter than American / /.)
The researchers believe it shows the development of a new accent among the scientists. Harrington said, “When we speak to each other, we remember that speech, and then that has an influence on our own speech production.”
While only small changes were recorded, the researchers believe the experiment helps to explain how different accents are created among enclosed (封闭的) communities — and may help us know why American and British English have developed as they have.
8. What were the scientists expected to do during the study
A. Tell stories. B. Show pictures.
C. Make sentences. D. Read and record words.
9. Which word’s pronunciation may change in the enclosed community in the study
A. show. B. sheep.
C. tube. D. adult.
10. Which of the following do the researchers agree with concerning the finding
A. It proves life in Antarctica is difficult.
B. It uncovers the connection of vowel sounds.
C. It helps build communications among people with different accents.
D. It may explain American and British English’s development.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Different Accents Around the World.
B. The Development of English Language.
C. Does a New Accent Form Among Enclosed Communities
D. What Would Scientists’ Daily Life Be Like in Antarctica

Clouds play an important part in determining the current and future temperature and global warming rate of the Earth. They cool the Earth by reflecting sunlight and warm the planet by holding heat in the atmosphere and stopping it from escaping to space.
So, clouds and how they are changing with global warming are the leading source of uncertainty in researchers’ ability to predict (预测) future climate. Earth system models (ESMs) are the best tool to predict the state of the Earth in the future.
However, there is still a problem. Errors in the energy balance of ESMs can be traced to the time of day they predict clouds, according to a group of University of Wyoming (UW ) researchers.
“In a paper, we show that in ESMs, there are errors in the time of simulated (模拟的) cloud, which could have a momentous impact on the cooling effect of clouds on the Earth’s surface,” says Travis Aerson, a scientist in the UW Department of Atmospheric Science. “Finally, however, the total error in the cooling effect of clouds in ESMs is small, so the current effect is not large.”
Aerson, the paper’s lead author, explained that although the total cooling effect of clouds in the models seems close to reality, this is partly because of different errors canceling each other out. As a result, the models may give correct results, but for the wrong physical reasons. However, satellite data (数据) and a new model developed by the research team showed that errors in cloud timing can explain almost half of the mistakes in how models estimate cloud cooling.
These cloud errors increase uncertainty in predictions about how fast the Earth will warm in the future. However, they do not change the main fact that the Earth is getting warmer. The study also suggests new ideas for reducing climate change, such as making certain clouds brighter, causing more sunlight to be reflected by the clouds.
12. What is paragraph 1 mainly about
A. The increase in global temperature. B. Reflection of sunlight.
C. The role of clouds. D. Types of clouds.
13. What problem do UW researchers find in ESMs
A. They get cloud timing wrong. B. They mistake cloud height.
C. They overuse satellite data. D. They ignore cloud movement.
14. What does the underlined word “momentous” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Informal. B. Important. C. Individual. D. Positive.
15. Why does the study mention brightening clouds
A. To reduce prediction uncertainty. B. To question current climate models.
C. To explain how clouds are formed. D. To show a possible climate solution.

Rita, a young girl from a poor background, walked along the road with a frown ruining her usually cheerful face. Tomorrow was her best friend Kathryn’s birthday, and Rita had no suitable dress for the celebration. Her family had fallen on hard times since the closure of her father’s company, leaving them unable to afford new clothes.
Deciding not to let this dampen her spirits, Rita chose an old dress that once held a special place in her heart. As it was now too short, she hoped to have it altered (修改). With determination, she carried the dress to a local tailor, only to be met with disappointment as the tailor explained that he could not take on any more alteration work due to an increasing number of orders.
Holding the paper bag with her old dress inside, Rita felt a wave of uncertainty. “What am I to do ” she wondered. Just then, her attention was drawn to a lady exiting a car and heading toward the bank. As the lady hurriedly searched for some papers in her purse, her wallet slipped out unnoticed. Without hesitation, Rita rushed to pick up the wallet and waited patiently on the steps outside the bank, despite the crowd and the time passing.
Finally, the lady emerged from the bank. When Rita returned the wallet, the lady was overwhelmed with gratitude. The lady checked the contents and found everything was placed as they had been. She noticed the girl’s face was covered with sadness. “What’s wrong with you, honey ” the lady asked.
Rita told the lady that she was invited to her friend’s birthday party but she had no suitable dress and the local tailor refused to alter her old dress for the party.

【答案】
The lady happened to be the owner of a clothing store that sewed clothes. Touched by Rita’s honesty and kindness she immediately offered to help. She led Rita into her clothing store, where the air was filled with the scent of fresh fabric and creativity. The lady called in her most skilled tailor and, on Rita’s advice, worked out a plan to transform the old dress. They added delicate lace to the hems, extended the skirts to the right length, and sewed on sparkling diamonds that shone in the light.
When Rita saw the altered dress, her eyes flew wide open. This once too short dress was transformed into an elegant outfit complete with delicate lace and vibrant colors. She could hardly believe it was the same one she had almost given up on. The lady smiled at her, handing the dress over. “It’s a gift,” she said softly. “A little kindness goes a long way.” Rita could only nod, her heart swelling with gratitude. Next day, Rita went to Kathryn’s birthday party with her head held high, and the story of the magical dress inspired her with the power of kindness.
