Some 50 km south of London, deep in the Sussex countryside, lies the world’s largest seed bank: the Millennium Seed Bank (MSB). It celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, with over 2.5 billion seeds collected from 40,000 species — not just in storage, but ready to be put to work restoring habitats and fighting extinction through a global partner network.
When the seed bank first opened in 2000, its objective was straightforward: to collect 10 percent of the world’s wild plant species, a target achieved in 2009. The focus now is on seed quality — concentrating on useful species to address biodiversity loss and climate change. This shift in focus comes as global environmental threats become more severe than ever before.
Each seed sent to the bank goes through a careful process of cleaning and drying before being stored in underground vaults (地窖) at -20℃, with some even preserved in liquid nitrogen at -196℃. These conditions can keep seeds alive for decades, even hundreds of years.
The MSB partners with over 100 countries, with China as a key partner. Since 2005, it has worked closely with the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, home to Asia’s largest seed bank. “We helped China design the facilities during its building phase and have built a really productive relationship since then,” said Breman, a senior research leader from the MSB. “I was there last year to discuss the next stage of our partnership. China has world-class facilities and is doing remarkable work, and its progress is critical for the worldwide efforts.”
Despite these strong global partnerships, the challenge remains: scientists estimate that 45 percent of flowering plant species are now at risk of extinction. Climate change, pollution, and overfarming are speeding up biodiversity loss. The MSB and its partners continue to work tirelessly to protect these vulnerable plant species.
28. What is the initial goal of the Millennium Seed Bank
A. To keep seeds alive for many years.
B. To include 10% of the world’s wild plant species.
C. To focus on seeds with higher quality and potential.
D. To collect seeds from 40,000 wild plant species by 2009.
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Where the MSB stores its seeds.
B. How seeds are processed and conserved.
C. How seeds are used in habitat restoration.
D. Why numerous plant species are facing extinction.
30. What can be inferred about China from Breman’s words
A. It designed the facilities for the MSB.
B. It needs more efforts to be professional.
C. It has the most advanced seed-bank equipment.
D. It plays a vital role in international plant protection.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To compare different seed banks in the world.
B. To call for urgent action to address biodiversity loss.
C. To introduce the MSB and its global conservation work.
D. To highlight China’s commitment to global seed conservation.

Squeeze a toy too hard and it deforms; hold a water bottle too loosely and it falls. These struggles bother millions who have lost all or part of an arm or hand and rely on man-made hands — devices that can grasp objects but cannot feel. Now, engineers at Johns Hopkins University have developed a bionic (仿生) hand that feels what it’s touching and grasps like a human, carefully conforming and adjusting its grasp to avoid damaging or mishandling whatever it holds.
The pioneering design marks a first for robotic hands, which have typically been too rigid or too soft to copy human touch. Such long-standing difficulties have limited the use of traditional artificial hands. “Our goal has been to create a more natural man-made hand that functions and feels like a real hand,” said lead researcher Sriramana Sankar. “We want people to hold their loved ones without worrying about hurting them.”
The hand integrates soft materials with a rigid 3D-printed internal structure. Its three layers of touch sensors, inspired by human skin, allow it to detect shapes and textures. Each soft finger joint can be controlled using forearm muscles, while machine learning algorithms (算法) process the signals from the artificial touch sensors and turn them into nerve-like messages, which are delivered through electrical stimulation to the user’s nervous system, allowing the brain to perceive touch in real time. In this way, users can sense pressure and surface just as they would with a real hand.
In lab tests, the hand identified and handled 15 everyday objects — from delicate stuffed toys to metal water bottles — with 99.69% accuracy. Most impressively, it picked up a thin plastic cup filled with water using just three fingers, without crushing (压扁) it.
“While this technology is still an early breakthrough, future models could feature greater strength, additional sensors, and industrial-grade materials,” said project director Nitish Thakor. “Such technology isn’t just for use in next-generation bionic hands, but also for future robotic hands, which will need to handle fragile materials like glass and fabric, just as human hands do.” The influence may soon reach far beyond medical use alone.
32. What function do machine learning algorithms perform in the bionic hand
A. They detect the shapes and textures of objects.
B. They deliver the messages to the nervous system.
C. They handle touch signals and create sensory feedback.
D. They control the movement of each finger joint directly.
33. Why does the author mention picking up a thin plastic cup filled with water
A. To compare the hand’s ability with that of a human hand.
B. To prove the hand has stronger grasp than traditional ones.
C. To suggest the hand is mainly designed for everyday tasks.
D. To show the hand’s ability to apply precise pressure control.
34. What is Nitish Thakor’s attitude towards the future of the bionic hand technology
A. Cautiously optimistic. B. Highly doubtful.
C. Somewhat disappointed. D. Extremely confident.
35. Which would be the best title for the text
A. A Bionic Breakthrough: The Hand That Feels.
B. A New Man-made Hand: Never Dropping a Cup.
C. A Robotic Innovation: Making Everyday Tasks Easier.
D. A Pioneering Design: Copying Human Bones and Skin.

Chuck Harris and his parents lived in the oldest house in his neighborhood. The house was spacious but unsafe. But Chuck’s dad never wanted to sell it or build a new one because “It’s part of our family,” he always said. When neighbors pulled down their old houses and replaced them with new ones, Chuck’s father remained stubborn and strongly attached to the old house.
When Chuck was 12, he was laughed at by the neighbors’ children because of the house. He turned to his father, asking why they didn’t move to a new house. He said it would be cheaper and more convenient to move than to keep repairing the old house. “Besides, the other kids won’t make fun of me anymore,” the boy added. But his father told him that the house was full of family memories, and he hoped Chuck would pass it down to future generations. Chuck lowered his head, lost in thought, and then nodded in agreement.
When Chuck turned 22, his father died in a car accident, leaving him heartbroken and lonely. So he buried himself in work to forget the pain. For years, he was so busy that he paid no attention to how old and worn out the house had become.
Later, his friends laughed at him when they saw the house. “That’s enough!” Chuck thought. “I’m sorry, Dad. I have to sell this house.”
Before putting it up for sale, Chuck checked the house carefully. One of the floorboards in the living room was broken and had to be replaced. As he pulled off the old boards, he was shocked to see a small wooden door hidden under them, with a carved family logo (标识) on it. He had never seen the door before, even though he thought he knew every corner of the house.
“OK, let’s see what’s inside,” he said and pushed the door open.

答案】范文:
He saw a ladder leading to a small basement room. After hesitating only a moment, Chuck climbed down, his pulse quickening with each movement. As his feet touched the ground, the beam of light revealed a small, time-capsule-like room filled with relics of the past-yellowed newspapers, an antique typewriter, some carefully arranged artifacts, and most surprisingly, an old-fashioned trunk with his family name carved on the side. It seemed as if the room had been preserved just for this moment.
Feeling like he was in a museum, Chuck got an idea. He opened his house as a real museum, which served as not only an honor to his father’s legacy, but also a perfect guest room for friends who’d once mocked the house. The news spread fast, and he quickly got many visitors. They took photographs, chatted and admired what was shown in front of them. Tears welled in Chuck’s eyes. For the first time in years, the old place didn’t feel like a burden-it was a gift. “The house wasn’t just a stubborn attachment, but a treasure passed down,” he thought to himself. He made a promise to pass it down to his kids.
