Listen, read and check.
What happened in the passage
Liu Lianman and his teammates made every effort to climb Mount Qomolangma. When Liu couldn’t climb further, he let his teammates stand on his shoulders to help them climb to the top. Later, the team gave Liu all their oxygen and reached the top of the towering mountain. The team members supported each other and created China’s mountaineering history.
教学提示:理解语篇标题
语篇标题No “I” in team’”运用了双关的修辞手法。
1 At noon on 24 May 1960, four climbers stood alone on the “roof ofthe world”. They were near the top of a thirty-metre-high wall of rock. It was called the Second Step. The top of Mount Qomolangma seemed right within reach. But no one had ever climbed the last few metres of the Second Step before.
2 Liu Lianman led the way. He tried four times. Each time, he fell back into the snow. The thin air took his strength away. “I’m not strong enough to try again,” he thought. So he chose to be a “human ladder”for his teammates! He lowered his body and let Qu Yinhua stand on his shoulders. Slowly, bit by bit, Liu stood up and helped Qu climb to the top. Every second was painful,
but Liu stood still. And he did the same for Gong Bu. Then he and Wang Fuzhou climbed up with a rope.
3 But Liu was too tired to keep going. The team were worried, but they had to carry on. They gave Liu all their oxygen. It was dangerous to climb without oxygen, but they knew Liu needed it. They made every effort through the cold and dark. Hours later, they reached the top of the towering mountain at 4:20 am on 25 May, They were the first Chinese to do so!
They were also the first people to climb the difficult North Ridge. What’s more, no one had done so without using oxygen!
4 When they returned to base camp, they were welcomed as heroes.People cheered for Liu, too. He did not reach the top, but he shouldered his team into China’s mountaineering history.
The team members were Liu Lianman, Qu Yinhua, Gong Bu and Wang Fuzhou.
The story happened on 24 May and 25 May 1960.
3.Complete the table about the story.

1. What is the “roof of the world”
4.Answer the questions.
The “roof of the world” refers to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.青藏高原
2. What does the writer mean by “human ladder”
“Human ladder” means Liu Lianman let his teammates stand on his shoulders so they could climb up.
4.Answer the questions.
3. Do you like the writer’s use of these expressions Why or why not
Yes, I like these expressions, because they are imaginative. They bring the passage to life and help me understand it better.
Think and share.
1. What kind of person do you think Liu Lianman was What role did he play in his team
I think Liu Lianman was selfless, strong and determined. He tried many times to climb the last few metres of the Second Step, even when he was tired and weak. When he couldn’t go on, he helped his teammates by becoming a “human ladder”. He gave up his own chance to reach the top so that his team could succeed. This shows he cared more about the team than himself, and he never gave up easily. He played a key role in his team. He was a helper and supporter.
Think and share.
2. Do you think the four climbers made a great team Why or why not
Yes, they made a great team. They supported each other, shared responsibilities and worked together to overcome challenges, even in life-threatening situations.
3. What similar stories do you know
