复数
集体名词表示由个体组成的集体，指一群人或某一事物的总称。集体名词作主语时谓语的单复数问题，可以归纳为以下三类：
[组1]
①The police have not made any arrests.
警方没有进行搜捕。
②The mankind long for peace.
人类渴望和平。
[归纳]
有些有生命的集体名词，如people、cattle、police、mankind、folk等表示复数含义，作主语时谓语动词通常用复数形式。
当people表示“民族”之意时有单复数形式；但表示“人，人们”的意思时为复数意义，不可加-s。

①Our clothing protects us against the cold.
我们的衣服可以御寒。
②All their luggage was lost in transit.
他们所有的行李都在运输过程中丢失了。
③The furniture is convenient to move.
这些家具搬起来很方便。
④All the machinery in the factory is made in China.
这个工厂里所有的机器都是中国产的。
[归纳]
有的集体名词通常只用作不可数名词，表示单数意义，作主语时，谓语动词用单数形式，如clothing、poetry、luggage、furniture、machinery、scenery、jewellery、equipment等。

①The population of the earth is increasing very slow.
地球上的人口正在十分缓慢地增长。
②One third of the population here are workers.
这里的人有三分之一是工人。
③The team is well organized.
这个队组织良好。
④The team are all good players.
这个队的队员都是好样的。

复数
单数
[归纳]
集体名词作主语，如果指整体概念，谓语动词用单数形式；如果指具体成员(们)，谓语动词用复数形式。常见的这类名词有army、audience、class、crowd、crew、family、group、government、population、staff、team、public等。
(1)单复数同形的名词作主语时，谓语形式要根据句意来确定。常见的这类名词有deer、fish、sheep、species、series、means、aircraft、crossroads、headquarters等。
①Every means has been tried.
每种方法都试过了。
②The means of communication between here and the outside are interrupted.
这里与外界的通信中断了。
(2)一些常用作复数或只有复数形式的名词作主语时，谓语动词用复数形式。常见的这类名词有clothes、trousers、shorts、goods、scissors、compasses、jeans、stockings、gloves、surroundings、thanks等。
①His clothes are hanging on the back of the chair.
他的衣服挂在椅子背上。
②The house itself is beautiful，but the surroundings are rather unpleasant.
房子本身挺漂亮，只是环境欠佳。
