Recently, I was surprised to learn that Louis XVI was an enthusiastic locksmith and blacksmith. Why would a king get his hands dirty doing the work of a commoner
Actually, I think I understand the pleasure he found in it. When I was a teenager, my uncle bought me the silversmithing tools. I taught myself to make silver jewelry and silverware. And soon I found myself whiling away hours pounding sheets of metal into various shapes, soldering (焊接) them together, and polishing them. I had no real goal. I was just absorbed in the process of making. Sometimes I was frustrated when a piece came out badly. But I would just go back to the workbench and keep going.
In my following professional life, I have had opportunities to see other people in this state of absorption. A web designer I worked with told me over lunch one day about how he had lain in bed the night before imagining the architecture of a new online site the company wanted. When I saw him later that day, his eyes were glued to the monitor as he carefully built the structure he had imagined.
Such absorption deeply attracts us, so it feels more like play than work. Indeed, when we are absorbed like this, it is probably a kind of play. Play, after all, is how children explore their abilities by putting them to use. As adults, we never really stop playing; we just replace dolls with websites, silverwork, or whatever creative tools we might enjoy. If we’re lucky enough to have jobs that allow us to engage in this kind of play, it’s obvious that absorption will help us perform better.
24. Why is Louis XVI mentioned at the beginning of the text
A. To tell an interesting story. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To solve a historic mystery. D. To show an unusual hobby.
25. What does the underlined part “whiling away” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Saving. B. Balancing. C. Killing. D. Cherishing.
26. How does the author present his idea in paragraph 3
A. By giving an example. B. By making a contrast.
C. By making an explanation. D. By citing others’ opinions.
27. What can we learn from the text
A. Dedication in the process matters. B. Luck never fails adults.
C. Chances favor creative minds. D. Play should be prioritized.

I’m brilliant, creative, generous and hardworking. Or so AI keeps telling me. Thanks to what’s known as “AI sycophancy”—the habit of our robots telling us only what we want to hear, as part of their duty to serve us— the artificial-intelligence tools I work with typically give me nothing but positive feedback.
All that praise comes with some serious risks. We humans are suffering from confirmation bias: We tend to believe the information and opinions that prove what we already think, even if we’re wrong. It feels so good to be right, and so uncomfortable to be corrected—especially if those corrections mean changing what you believe or how you behave.
That’s why I work hard to prevent AI’s pleaser tendencies with strategies like bringing together a virtual “team of competitors”, at least some of whom are guaranteed to disagree with me. Just as important, I’m using AI to control my human sensibilities to praise, so that when I do get a sycophantic response to my instructions, I doubt it.
Perhaps the hardest part about all this is that you’re deliberately making yourself feel uncomfortable. Nobody wants to hear they are wrong. But if you won’t let the AI make you uncomfortable, then it will only give you the answers you want to hear, though those answers are incorrect.
And that tolerance for discomfort matters for reasons t that go way beyond the accuracy of AI. When we get used to AIs that leap to serve us and constantly tell us we’re right, we reduce our tolerance for humans who challenge us.
It doesn’t have to be that way, if we use smart tricks to push back on AI’s sycophantic tendencies. We can use AI to practice our tolerance for that discomfort, and perhaps even increase our appreciation for the humans who (unlike AIs) give us the straight talk we sometimes need.
28. What phenomenon does the author point out in paragraph 1
A. AI’s ability to offer creative ideas. B. AI’s tendency of pleasing users.
C. AI’s skill in correcting human errors. D. AI’s faith in protecting people.
29. Why does the author build a virtual “team of competitors
A. To control AI’s casual behaviors. B. To train AI’s sensing abilities.
C. To boost AI’s working efficiency. D. To avoid AI’s blind recognition.
30. Which of the following may be a solution to AI sycophancy
A. Refusing others’ fair comment. B. Reducing the use of AI tools.
C. Ignoring uncomfortable feedback. D. Allowing AI to challenge us.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. AI Sycophancy: A Hidden Risk to remove.
B. AI Sycophancy: A Secret of AI Popularity.
C. AI Sycophancy: A result of AI Development.
D. AI Sycophancy: A Blessing for Human Progress.
D
Conventional microphones and electronic sensors often fail in intense heat or suffer from severe signal interference, making them unsafe to use inside powerful transformers and engines. To solve this problem, a team of researchers has built a fiber-optic (光纤) microphone, showing how light-based s sensing can overcome the limitations s of conventional electronics in extreme environments.
Made from glass rather than electronics, the microphone is so small that it fits inside a strand of pure silica fiber, which uses light changes to detect sound, based on the photoelastic effect The device uses a custom sensing structure that includes a vibration-sensitive membrane(膜) and a glass micro beam hung inside a single mode optical fiber. Together, these elements form an instrument capable of measuring extremely small vibrations, including those generated by electrical discharge events.
Creating this suspended structure within such a narrow fiber required a highly precise construction method. The researchers combined laser technology and chemical processing, an advanced technique that enables the formation of detailed micro and nanostructures deep inside solid materials.
The all-glass design makes the device incredibly durable and allows it to keep working in tough conditions. The researchers tested the microphone in a 1000℃ furnace for 100 minutes, finding that it remained stable and continued to transmit clear signals during this time. They also demonstrated the sensor’s acoustic performance across an ultra-wide range from 40 kHz to 1.6 MHz, confirming its ability to detect sounds in both air and underwater environments.
Such a microphone can be placed inside high-voltage transformers to listen for tiny electrical sparks. It discovers hidden dangers early and prevents blackouts or explosions. In the future, it can be widely used in industrial testing, medical imaging and aerospace monitoring, offering a safe and stable sensing solution for extreme conditions.
32. What is special about the newly-developed microphone
A. It is powered by electricity. B. It depends on light changes.
C. It may break down in high heat. D. It can detect signal interference.
33. Which best illustrates the internal structure of the all-fiber microphone
A. B. C. D.
34. What do the figures in paragraph 4 show about the microphone
A. Its simple production process. B. Its popularity in industrial test.
C. Its reliability in extreme conditions. D. Its high precision in construction.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Supporting evidence of the research results.
B. A further explanation of the research methods.
C. Potential applications of the research subject.
D. A reasonable doubt about the research process.

Be a Teenage Composer
Your teenage years can be a great time for songwriting. You have a lot of emotions, and there tends to be a lot going on in your life. Writing songs can be a great way to navigate this period and express yourself. 36 . To make it easy for you, we’ve got a handy list of techniques.
Brainstorm specific topics to write about
37 . If you can focus on an emotion about a certain thing, or some aspect of society that affects you, it can make writing lyrics easier. Avoid general topics in favor of something very specific. Rather than saying, “I’m going to write about friendship,” you might say, “I’m going to write about the first day that we met and what that felt like.”
Write a letter to a friend about your passion
This is a good way to get lots of ideas down quickly. Think of what you care deeply about, and tell your friend all about it. Write as much as you can. 38 .You can work these phrases into a song, adding new lyrics as needed.
39
Songs that tell a specific story can be a good option when you are starting out. Think of a specific happy or sad memory from when you were young and write an account of it. Narrow down the story and arrange it into song form. You could write about a time when you got lost in the mall and had to wait for your mom to come to get you.
Start with the music
Many songwriters who are good at an instrument will start by coming up with a melody, even if it is just a few seconds long, and writing lyrics that fit the tone of the music. Having a tune in mind may give you the inspiration you need to write the lyrics. Ask yourself how the music makes you feel. 40
A. Tell a childhood story
B. Work the lyrics around that
C. Begin with a happy parent-child time
D. Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started
E. A good way to get started is to pick something to center on
F. Then go through and pick out phrases and lines that stand out

A Special Day
Seventeen years or seventy-four, it made no difference to Tanino. He still loved being showered with affection and attention on his birthday. He would start his special day answering birthday messages and calls. Then he would meet his friends at Carmelo’s cafe and enjoy a free coffee and cake. At lunchtime, he’d walk home for one of his favourite meals, prepared by his wife, Melina. In the afternoon, his mother would have biscuits and coffee ready at her flat.
But this time it seemed a little different. When he asked Melina if they could have pasta with tuna the following Sunday, she frowned and refused. And he then suggested sweet-and-sour liver, which was turned down too. Though it was a family tradition that the birthday person could choose the menu, he said with annoyed generosity, “You choose, then, dear.” The surprise on Melina’s face told him she had totally forgotten his birthday. How could she forget it His birthday had been on the same day for more than 70 years—most of which they had celebrated together. If his wife had forgotten it, would his friends remember
By the time Tanino arrived at Carmelo’s cafe next day he had convinced himself that nobody would remember his birthday, despite him always remembering theirs. “Are we meeting next Sunday ” he asked his friends as a test. One after another, they all declined due to family commitments. “We never meet on a Sunday,” someone said. Tanino took the comment as proof that his friends, too, had forgotten his birthday.
Upset, he left the cafe and decided to visit his mother. Would she, the woman who was certainly there at his birth, forget his birthday His mother was very happy to see him, and they chatted about many things—except his birthday. Even when Tanino was leaving, she didn’t say anything like “See you on Sunday”, which depressed Tanino so much that, when he walked past a shop, he bought three boxes of chocolates for himself. If nobody was going to celebrate his birthday, he would do it himself!

应用文
Sample Writing:
As our school’s Spring Football Tournament is in full swing, I’d like to draw your attention to sports safety. Why particular emphasis should be placed on it is that an injury can not only end a player’s tournament but also cast a shadow over the joy of the game.
To keep risks at bay, you are supposed to take the following simple steps. First, warm up thoroughly to prepare your muscles and joints. Second, wear proper protective equipment — shin guards and ankle supports matter. Third, play by the rules and respect opponents; reckless tackles help no one. Finally, listen to your body — fatigue and pain are warning signs, not badges of honor. Let passion shine, but let safety come first. Wishing everyone a thrilling and injury-free tournament!
(Sample writing):
Para 1: Tanino spent the rest of the week frustrated. He moped around the house, barely speaking to Melina, and even skipped his usual walks to the café. On Sunday morning, he woke up to an empty house, with only a note on the table saying Melina had gone out. He made himself a plain breakfast, ate the chocolates he’d bought alone, and resigned himself to a quiet, forgotten birthday. That afternoon, he decided to take a long walk to clear his head, only to return home to a dark, silent house. He fumbled for the light switch—and suddenly, the room burst into brightness, with shouts of “Happy birthday, Tanino!” filling the air.
Para 2: Instantly he realized they hadn’t forgotten his birthday after all. Melina, his mother, and all his friends were gathered in the living room, surrounded by balloons, a huge cake, and his favorite pasta with tuna on the table. Carmelo even brought a complimentary coffee and cake from the café, just like always. Melina hugged him tightly, explaining they’d planned a surprise party to make his 74th birthday extra special. Tanino’s eyes filled with tears, his frustration melting away into pure joy. He’d spent the whole week worrying, only to be showered with more love and affection than he’d ever imagined.

A篇
语篇出处:the Guardian Tuesday 10 March 2026
根据文章第二段“allowing customers to heat the rooms of their choice-reducing energy use and helping cut costs”可知,HeatCore取暖器允许用户选择性地加热房间,从而减少能源使用并帮助降低费用,这直接对应了“成本效益高”和“节能”的特点,故C项正确。
根据文中Fiona的评论“I got Fischer to remove 5 old storage heaters and replace with Fischer Radiators on the recommendation of 2 friends who were delighted with their Fischer radiators.”

A项正确。

Wall Street Journal, 21 March, 2026
根据第一段,作者指出AI存在“AI sycophancy”现象,即“the habit of our robots telling us only what we want to hear”,说明AI倾向于只说用户想听的话,而非客观真实。

文章第二段“Made from glass rather than electronics,”和第四段“The all-glass design”表明新款麦克风是全玻璃制成,故应是透明状,另第二段明确描述了内部结构:“a vibration-sensitive membrane and a glass micro beam suspended inside a single mode optical fiber”,即一个振动敏感膜和一个玻璃微束,两者都悬浮在单模光纤内部。
第四段给出的数字包括“1000°C furnace for 100 minutes”以及频率范围“40 kHz to 1.6 MHz”。

D项“Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started.”(有时最难的部分就是如何开始)恰到好处:它承认开始写歌有难度,从而为后
37. 空格位于“Brainstorm specific topics to write about”小标题下段落的开头。 E项“A good way to get started is to pick something to center on.”(一个好的开始方式是选择某件事作为中心)中的“get started”与段落小标题的“Brainstorm”呼应,“pick something to center on”则概括了后文“聚焦于具体情感”的核心建议。
38. 空格位于“Write a letter to a friend about your passion”段落的中间。 F 项“Then go through and pick out phrases and lines that stand out.”(然后仔细检查,挑出那些突出的短语和句子)中的“Then”承接前文的“Write as much as you can”,“pick out phrases and lines”则自然引出后文的“work these phrases into a song”,逻辑链条完整。
40. 空格位于“Start with the music”段落的结尾。 B项“Work the lyrics around that.”(围绕那个感觉来写歌词)中的“that”指代前文的“how the music makes you feel”,既具体可行,又简洁有力。

41-45 BCADB 46-50 BDAAC 51-55 DACDC
41. B 【解析】考查名词词义辨析。句意:实验室墙外,他们的父母在烈日下辛勤劳作,从地里拔出生菜,而他们的孩子则在研究生菜的遗传物质。A. assistants助手;B. parents父母;C. tutors导师;
A. preserved保护;B. gathered聚集;C. studied研究;D. sliced切分。
A. tip提示;B. proposal建议;C. obstacle障碍;D. path道路,途径。
文章中参与夏令营的孩子是移民农场工子女(grew up in an agricultural town where college wasn’t the...path),这类家庭经济和教育资源匮乏,属于“弱势家庭”,且与作者的成长背景相呼应,故选B。
A. accepted录取;B. questioned质疑;C. judged评判;D. awarded奖励。
A. choice选择;B. concern担忧;C. responsibility责任,唯一选择;D. passion热情。 故选A。
A. victories胜利;B. tricks诡计;C. failures失败;D. complaints抱怨。
A. quit放弃;B. hesitated 犹豫;C. panicked恐慌;D. transformed转变,蜕变。
A. expected预料,预想;B. admitted承认,录取;C. suspected怀疑;D. deserved应得。
A. look into调查;B. compete in竞争;C. guide in指导;D. subscribe to订阅。
A. severely严重地;B. slightly微妙地;C. greatly极大地;D. temporarily暂时地。
