Tom is a 14-year-old Grade Seven student who loves riding his bike to school every day. His
teacher and parents often reminded him to follow traffic rules, such as stopping at red lights and
riding slowly on the road, but he never took their words seriously. He always thought he was a
skilled rider and that nothing would ever happen to him, so he often broke traffic rules carelessly.
Last Monday morning Tom got up late because his alarm clock didn't ring. He was in a great
hurry to get to school on time, so he rode his bike as fast as he could, ignoring all the traffic signs.
When he reached a busy crossroads, the traffic light turned red, but he didn't stop. He thought he
could cross the road quickly before any cars came. Suddenly, a car appeared from the corner, and
the driver was so surprised that he stepped on the brake hard. Tom was scared and fell off his bike
immediately. His knee was scratched badly, and his bike was broken, but luckily, he wasn't
seriously hurt.
The kind driver got out of the car to help him and told him that traffic rules are made to keep
people safe. Tom felt deeply sorry for his mistake and promised the driver that he would never
break traffic rules again. He also told his teacher what happened at school, and his teacher praised
him for being honest and taught the whole class the importance of following rules. From then on,
Tom changed a lot—he always followed traffic and school rules, and even encouraged his friends
to do the same.

There are millions of recipes hidden in the boxes and hearts of grandmothers and parents. These
family recipes are a special part of our family history. Some of them have been passed down from
generation to generation.
"I realized I couldn't go home every weekend for my mom's delicious dishes," says Shreya, who
is about to enter university. Shreya has recently started following her mother around the kitchen,
taking notes on how to make her "massala chai" and tasty kachoris.
"Those special tastes can immediately unlock a whole flood of emotions, memories and feelings
of family, love, and comfort," says she.
She adds, "I am looking to the day when my kids will come to know of their grandmother through
the dishes they cooked."
But many of us find it difficult to keep the food connection with our busy life. Even if we have
time, not many of us take the effort to collect and record the recipes from our grandmothers and
parents. We often get a recipe on the phone and take it down quickly on a piece of paper. We just
stick it onto the fridge for a week or two and forget about it as soon as the paper disappears from
there.
Actually, there are simple ways to keep family recipes. Scrapbooks are easily found in the
market. You can even add photos to record every detail of your memories about the recipe. With
the help of some popular apps like Story Scans, recording family recipes has never been easier.
What is needed is to scan the recipes and record the story behind each of them. It can become the
most meaningful work you have ever done with and for your family.
Keeping family recipes is saving and honoring our tradition so that future generations can
continue to make family ties stronger. Every time you remember your loved ones, recreate one of
the dishes from your collection and let the memories from the good old days comfort you. So why
not gift your kids a family recipe book when they are starting a new life

Every year, over 1 million sea animals—including turtles, seabirds, and dolphins—lose their
lives because of human-caused pollution, with plastic waste being the deadliest threat.
According to a study by the Ocean Conservancy, more than 8 million tons of plastic come into
the world's oceans every year, forming "plastic islands" that cover vast areas of living places of
sea animals. Turtles often mistake transparent plastic bags for jellyfish which is their primary food
source. Eating these plastics leads to the inside injuries and makes them difficult to eat. Seabirds,
such as albatrosses, accidentally feed their chicks tiny plastic pieces, which fill their stomachs and
prevent them from taking in nutrients, resulting in a 60% death rate among young birds in polluted
areas. Even dolphins and whales get caught in fishing nets that are thrown away, known as "ghost
net," which limit their movement and cause slow, painful deaths.
To deal with this problem, a group of young volunteers aged 15 to 18 set up the "Ocean
Guardians" project three years ago. Every weekend, they gather along the coastal areas of their
city to clean up litter, collecting an average of 500 kilograms of plastic waste per month. Beyond
beach clean-ups, the volunteers sort out the collected waste to send recyclable materials to
processing factories, reducing the need for new plastic production. They also organize educational
workshops for tourists and local people, using photos and videos to show the devastating
influence of plastic on sea life. "Many people don't realize that a single plastic bottle can take up
to 450 years to break down in the ocean," explained Mia, the 17-year-old leader of the group. "Our
goal is to make everyone aware that small changes, like using reusable bags and water bottles, can
make a big difference."
Additionally, the volunteers work together with marine biologists to monitor the health of local
sea animals. They record the hurt or sick creatures and report them to wildlife rescue centers,
helping over 200 injured animals receive treatment last year. Their efforts have also influenced
local policymakers: the city recently passed a law banning single-use plastic straws and bags in
restaurants and shops. "Saving sea animals isn't just about cleaning beaches," Mia added. "It's
about changing people's habits and building a long-lasting relationship between humans and
nature. If we don't act now, we might lose these amazing creatures forever."
44.The underlined word "devastating" in Paragraph 3 probably means ______.
A. gentle B. terrible C. short-term D. different
45.Why do young seabirds have high death rate in polluted areas
A. They are killed by larger sea animals.
B. They eat plastic pieces fed by their parents.
C. They cannot find enough jellyfish to eat.
D. They get trapped in fishing net easily.
46.What can we learn from the passage
第 6 页 共 11 页
A. Plastic waste takes less than 100 years to break down.
B. The "Ocean Guardians" only work on beach clean-ups.
C. The local government has taken action to reduce plastic use.
D. Over 1 million sea animals die from ghost net every year.
47.What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To introduce the "Ocean Guardians" project's history.
B. To explain how plastic pollution harms sea animals.
C. To call on people to join in protecting sea animals.
D. To show the importance of marine biologists' work.
六、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共 10 分,48-50 题每题 2 分,51 题 4 分)
On September 2, 2024, Xinhua reported that many schools in China built "Smart Playgrounds"
with AI and IT tools for students. They could make PE classes better and help students keep
healthy. Take Jin Ling High School in Nanjing as an example. A 14-year-old student named Liu
Tianxiao once tried the new playground. After he finished a three-minute rope-skipping test, his
score and ranking appeared on a big screen immediately, which made him excited.
These smart playgrounds are usually large and well-equipped. They use facial recognition
technology to identify each student quickly. AI cameras can closely monitor students doing
different kinds of sports, including running, rope-skipping, sit-ups, pull-ups and medicine-ball
throws. For teachers, it becomes much easier to check all students' performance on a computer.
The AI system can count scores automatically, check if students' movements are correct and give
useful feedback, which not only reduces teachers' work but also makes sports tests fairer.
Smart playgrounds bring many benefits to students. They help students exercise in the right way
to avoid getting hurt, make exercise more interesting like a game and build their confidence by
showing their progress. However, they also have some downsides. They cost a lot of money to
build and repair, so not all schools can afford them. Besides, too much attention to scores may
bring stress to students, and the cameras may cause privacy worries. Despite these problems,
Hunan Province plans to build more than 130 smart playgrounds to help students stay healthy and
make PE smarter.
48.What did many schools build for students in China
