Celebrating both Hanukkah and Christmas gives my children the chance to enjoy double presents—often more than they can actually use or appreciate. What gets lost this time of year, I often feel, especially while rushing around or spending hours online to buy gifts, is the importance of giving back.
Last year, to balance receiving with giving, our two daughters each chose a charity, and our family made a donation (捐赠). This year, I plan to do the same over the holidays.
In conversations with other parents, I’ve learned that the best way to teach our children to think of others and want to give back during the holidays is to do that work throughout the year. As parenting coach Vicki Hoefle explains, “If we give our kids all year long, they may struggle to change their mindset and think about giving back during the holidays.”
Danielle Le Roy, a mom from Chicago, shared how she and her husband have been mindful of this balance since their children were born. Instead of giving gifts to each other, they put together a small basket of gifts for those who provided the family a service throughout the year, such as mail carriers and deliverymen.
Hoefle, a mom of five, says small actions, like teaching children how to help their community, are key to fostering (培养) a generous spirit. Parents should look for opportunities to get their children involved: Is the child interested in animals? Excited about performing in front of elderly people or reading to them?
Hoefle remembers when one of her daughters donated part of her pocket money to a local animal shelter (收容所) every week. “We did that for three years,” says Hoefle. The shelter eventually invited her daughter to see what her money had paid for. “And that was a pivotal moment for everyone in the family. Suddenly, they all looked at each other and thought, ‘This matters. This is real.’”
4. What does the author think is often ignored during the holiday season?
A. The presents kids want. B. The stress of holiday shopping.
C. The true spirit of giving. D. The need for holiday decorations.
5. Why does the author mention Hoefle’s words in the third paragraph?
A. To give a suggestion. B. To support an opinion.
C. To remember a coach. D. To highlight a problem.
6. What does the underlined word “pivotal” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Aching. B. Ordinary. C. Adjustable. D. Important.
7. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Teaching Kids to Give as They Receive B. Explaining the Downside of Receiving
C. Encouraging the Generosity of the Public D. Illustrating What to Donate over Holidays
C
At first sight, plays written 2,500 years ago in ancient Greece might seem like old museum pieces. They may seem to be old-dated and out of fashion. However, The case may be the opposite. A new educational fashion is bringing these classic stories, especially by the famous writer Sophocles, into the life of modern teenagers. Educators find that these ancient plays powerfully explore human questions about family, life and identity — themes deeply connected with young people today.
A key person in this movement is Bryan Doerries, a director who founded an organization called Theater of War. He stages simple readings of Greek plays, like Sophocles’ Ajax and Philoctetes, in schools and communities. These plays often focus on soldiers returning home with deep physical and psychological (心理的) wounds. Doerries noticed that after these performances, audience members, including many teenagers, were thirsty to share their own personal stories of struggle and loss. The ancient characters’ experiences opened a safe space for them to discuss difficult modern issues.
This educational means works because it creates a psychological distance. When teenagers discuss the problems of an ancient king or hero, they can more easily explore similar feelings in their own life — like pressure, anger or confusion — without feeling directly judged. As one educator explained, it allows students to look at life through art, making personal issues feel more manageable.
The project has shown amazing results. It helps students build empathy (同情) by connecting with characters from another time. More importantly, it develops their critical (批判性的) thinking skills when they discuss the characters’ difficult choices. Finally, by connecting with these ancient characters, students get a new understanding of their own challenges, discovering that their feelings and questions are part of a shared human experience that dates back thousands of years. Therefore, they may learn from similar situations and make necessary changes if possible.
8. Why are ancient Greek plays considered effective for modern teenagers?
A. They are written by a famous writer. B. They are short and easy to understand.
C. They are performed with modern music. D. They explore themes teenagers face today.
9. What change did Doerries find on teenagers after they saw the performances?
A. They wanted to see more. B. They were likely to work harder.
C. They shared their experiences. D. They suffered great struggle and loss.
10. What is a probable benefit of the psychological distance created by ancient plays?
A. It makes the stories more interesting to students.
B. It allows students to discuss personal feelings openly.
C. It helps students remember historical dates more easily.
D. It proves that ancient people had easier lives than people today.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The process of the project. B. The effects of the project.
C. The future plan of the project. D. The difficulties of the project.

Scientists from the University of Otago’s Christchurch Medical School have discovered a direct connection between people’s vitamin C intake and their skin’s ability to produce collagen (胶原蛋白)and renew itself. The study, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, clearly shows that skin health is influenced by vitamin C from daily food, not just by topical (外用的)creams applied to the skin surface. It also found that vitamin C levels in the skin are closely related to those in the blood. Therefore, eating more foods rich in vitamin C can effectively increase vitamin C levels in both the blood and the skin.
The research included 24 healthy adults from New Zealand and Germany. Those eating two SunGold kiwifruits daily raised blood vitamin C levels and saw a clear increase in skin vitamin C. This made skin thicker — due to more collagen — and sped up outer skin renewal. Lead researcher Professor Margreet Vissers described the results as surprising and said the strong connection between skin thickness and vitamin C intake is fully believable.
She noted the connection between blood and skin vitamin C is clearer than in other organs. “We were surprised by how closely blood vitamin C levels are connected to those in the skin,” she said. The research team also discovered that vitamin C in the blood can reach all layers of the skin and help the skin work better. Though vitamin C is often added to skincare products, it is not well taken in through the outer skin. However, skin cells can take in vitamin C from the blood very well.
SunGold kiwifruits were chosen for the study because they always have a high vitamin C content. But the researchers believe other foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges and berries, can bring similar benefits to the skin. It is important to keep steady vitamin C levels in the blood because the human body does not store vitamin C for a long time. Professor Vissers suggested that healthy people can reach the best blood vitamin C levels with about 250mg of vitamin C every day through their diet.
12. What affects skin health according to the study?
A. Water taken in by the skin. B. Vitamin C from food intake.
C. Collagen from skin products. D. Topical skincare creams alone.
13. What is Professor Vissers’ attitude towards the study results?
A. Doubtful. B. Approving. C. Unconcerned. D. Objective.
14. Why are vitamin C-rich skincare products less effective?
A. They lack enough collagen.
B. They are not used in a proper way.
C. They don’t suit all skin types.
D. They are poorly taken in through skin.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Vitamin C Intake and Skin Health
B. Blood Vitamin C and Skin Vitamin C
C. Skincare Products and Vitamin C Intake
D. Collagen Production and Skin Thickness

One sunny afternoon, 8-year-old Leo was running after a colorful butterfly around the neighborhood. He laughed as he ran faster, his eyes fixed on the moving wings. He was so caught up in the game that he didn’t notice where he was going. Near the neighbor’s yard, he tripped over a small stone and crashed right into Mrs. Lee’s potted sunflowers — her favorite ones.
The pot broke into pieces, and soil spread all over the path. Leo froze, his laughter gone in a second. Mrs. Lee was always so nice to him — she’d even given him a tiny sunflower plant last spring. He knelt down and tried to put the flowers and soil back into the broken pot, but only made it worse and got his hands all dirty.
He was so scared he’d ruined her hard work that he stepped back, his heart beating fast. He looked at her door, half hoping she hadn’t seen it and half wishing she would come out so he could say sorry right away. However, scared of what Mrs. Lee might say, he turned and ran home as fast as he could. When he pushed open the door, he didn’t even take off his shoes — he just ran to his room and sat on the bed, hands covering his face.
After a few minutes, his mom Clara knocked softly on his door. “Leo? You’re home early, and you ran in so fast. Are you okay?” She eased the door open and saw him sitting with his head down. She walked over and sat next to him, putting a hand on his back. “You look upset. What’s wrong, sweetie?” she asked.
Leo took a deep breath and then told his mom what had happened with tears in his eyes. His mom hugged him gently and said, “It’s okay to make mistakes, but we need to take responsibility.” She took out a new pot and some fresh soil, and then held Leo’s hand. “Let’s go and say sorry and fix it together.”

答案】Dear Sir/Madam,
I’m Li Hua, an exchange student from China during this summer vacation. I’m delighted to learn that volunteer students are wanted for an exhibition of Chinese ceramics to be held in the local art gallery. Now I’m writing to apply for the position.
The reasons for my application are as follows. First of all, having been exposed to foreign teachers since a young age, I can communicate freely with others in English. What’s more, years of being monitor makes me a brilliant organizer, which will help a lot to keep the exhibition in order.
I hope you can consider my application. I’d appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration.
Yours,
Li Hua
答案】One possible version:
Leo thought for a while and nodded. They walked to Mrs. Lee’s gate together, with the new pot pressed against Leo’s side. When they arrived, Mrs. Lee was already outside, sweeping the spilled soil into a small pile. When she saw Leo, her eyes widened, but before she could speak, he stepped forward and said with his head down, “I broke your pot. It was an accident. I brought a new pot to help plant your sunflowers again, if you’ll let me.” He looked up, worried she’d be angry.
To his surprise, Mrs. Lee’s face softened into a smile. “Of course you can, Leo, I’m proud of you for telling the truth — that’s the hardest part.” Together, the three of them carefully lifted the sunflowers into the new pot. Leo patted the soil gently, while Clara helped straighten the plant. Mrs. Lee then fetched her green watering can and poured the cold water gently around the roots. When they finished, Mrs. Lee picked a small sunflower and gave it to Leo. “This is for being honest and responsible,” she said.
