Troubled by scoliosis (脊柱侧弯) since the age of four — a condition that causes the spine (脊柱) to curve abnormally and affects roughly 100, 000 children in America each year — Anne had to wear a rigid plastic brace (支架) 19 to 22 hours a day to prevent the curve from progressing as she grew.
Most of her classmates were kind. Still, Anne often felt set apart. In quiet moments, a sense of loneliness would wash over her — she was tired of feeling different from everyone else.
That year, the Easter Bunny brought her a basket with a special doll. The doll, Chelsea, is Barbie’s sister, and she, too, wore a back brace for scoliosis. “She’s just like me!” Anne cried to her mother, Nicole, who smiled as the little girl examined every detail, right down to the doll’s curved spine. Anne played with Chelsea every day, bringing the doll everywhere. She felt a sisterhood with another girl like her.
Weeks later, Anne voiced a heartfelt wish: “Mom, I wish all girls with scoliosis could have this doll so they don’t ever feel alone either.” Nicole saw renewed determination in her daughter’s eyes and helped turn the idea into a family mission. Anne’s twin brother and her dad all jumped in to help. They launched their efforts by starting a lemonade stand during a neighborhood sale, and then created a GoFundMe page on the Internet.
After a local news station featured their story, the doll’s maker stepped in to support the cause, supplying all the dolls they needed. What began as a goal to donate 50 dolls quickly grew beyond expectation. Now 11 years old, Anne and her family have donated more than 870 Chelsea dolls to hospitals nationwide, bringing smiles to countless children.
“Even if you feel alone, you’re not,” she shared. “Everybody has something. It’s what you do with it that matters — so choose to help others to be strong in their journey.”

When you’re learning a new language, there are a lot of things to remember: spelling rules, grammar rules, punctuation rules… the list is endless. But there’s something that can help you: mnemonics [pronounced “nemonics”].
Mnemonics are techniques to help you remember things. There are a variety of them, including rhymes, spelling acronyms and sentence mnemonics.
Rhymes are a great way to remember things. The sounds, unusual words and rhythm of them help you recall ideas. Do you know when Columbus sailed to America There’s a rhyme to help you which goes like this, “In fourteen-hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” Most people who’ve heard that never forget it!
Spelling acronyms involve creating a sentence based on the letters of a target word. For example, the following sentence can help you with the spelling of the word “because”, “Big elephants can always understand small elephants”. Notice how the first letter of each word in the sentence spells out the word “because”. And if you can’t remember the spelling of the word “mnemonics”, use this one “Mike never eats meat or nuts in case he’s sick”!
Sentence mnemonics are also useful. The following can help you with the difference between the words “principal” and “principle”, “A principal is your pal at school, and a principle is a belief or rule.” Or this one to help you remember the difference in spelling between “deserts” (such as the Sahara) and “desserts” (such as Tiramisu), “A dessert has two sugars so it’s sweeter, but a desert only has one.” [The two “sugars” mentioned in the sentence refer to the two s’s in the word “dessert”.]
You can learn grammar rules with sentence mnemonics too. For example, this one can help you with the position of adjectives, “Adjectives come before nouns just as ‘A’ comes before ‘N’.” And this one can help you learn about the use of apostrophes (撇号), “Apostrophes show possession.”
Mnemonics can help a lot with language learning. Why not try inventing a few of your own!
8. What are mnemonics in the passage
A. Professional tool books. B. Specific language model.
C. Language learning strategies. D. Different language rules.
9. Why is the rhyme about Columbus mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To compare rhymes with other techniques.
B. To show how rhymes make facts memorable.
C. To prove that Columbus was a great explorer.
D. To explain the importance of historical events.
10. Which of the following is an example of a sentence mnemonic
A. “In 1066, the Normans did fix” rhymes the year of the Norman Conquest.
B. “George’s elderly old grandfather rode a pig home yesterday” helps spell “geography”.
C. “My very educated mother just served us noodles” helps remember the order of planets.
D. “A stationery store sells paper, while a stationary car doesn’t move” differentiates words.
11. Which of the following would the author probably agree with about inventing mnemonics
A. It requires special training. B. It does not take much time or effort.
C. It is something readers can try themselves. D. Language teachers should use it in class.
D
A town in Finland has begun using the world’s largest “sand battery” to help provide heat. The unusual method of storing energy allows the town to create heat when electricity prices are cheap, and store it for long periods of time. The heat can then be used whenever it’s needed.
Pornainen is a town in Finland with about 5,000 people. Most of the buildings in the town are heated through “district heating”. In a district heating system, hot water is piped into the buildings from a central heating plant. That way, each building doesn’t need to have its own boiler. The central heating system in Pornainen is run by a company called Loviisan L mp .
Until recently, Pornainen’s heat came from burning oil and wood chips. Loviisan L mp was looking for ways to cut the pollution it created. They hired a company called Polar Night to build the world’s largest sand battery. In 2022, Polar Night successfully built a smaller sand battery.
A sand battery works because sand (tiny rocks) can be heated to high temperatures and hold heat long in a well-insulated container. Pornainen’s battery uses crushed soapstone (滑石) — waste from a Finnish fireplace-maker — instead of sand. The soapstone can be heated to 750° Fahrenheit and the battery can hold onto this heat for months.
The battery took a year to build, standing roughly 42.5 feet tall and almost 50 feet across. It can heat Pornainen for about a month in summer and a week in winter. Used since early summer, it heats sand when electricity is cheapest; when heat is needed, air is pushed through the hot sand, heating it and the hot air can then be used to heat water or turn it into steam, warming up homes, government buildings, a library and a school.
About 43% of Finland’s energy is renewable, but solar and wind only work part-time — creating energy surpluses (剩余) or shortages. Storing energy solves this. The battery will cut winter wood chip use by 60%, aiding Loviisan L mp ’s goal of being climate neutral by 2035. Polar Night is also looking into ways to turn the stored heat back into electricity.
12. What can the sand battery do for Pornainen
A. It makes electricity cheap.
B. It cleans waste in time.
C. It stores heat for a long time.
D. It cuts other energy supplies.
13. Why did Loviisan L mp build the sand battery
A. To reduce pollution.
B. To better use electricity.
C. To test new technology.
D. To heat more buildings.
14. What does the underlined word “well-insulated” mean in paragraph 4
A. Hard to break.
B. Good at keeping heat.
C. Easy to carry.
D. Large in size.
15. Which is the best title for the text
A. A New Tool Helps Produce Electricity
B. Finland Has a Plan for Clean Energy
C. We Learn How to Store Winter Heat
D. Largest “Sand Battery” Heats Finnish Town

Fear is one of our strongest emotions. However, people with phobias(恐惧)have an extreme fear response that causes both physical and psychological pain. In everyday life, some phobia triggers(诱因)are much easier to avoid than others. For instance, people who suffer from a fear of bats are highly unlikely to be troubled by these creatures every day. ____16____
The good news is that there are a variety of different methods used to treat phobias. Among the most popular are cognitive behavioral therapy(疗法), exposure therapy, and virtual reality therapy.
*Cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT)
____17____ It is thought that unreasonable anxiety is caused by a patient’s negative interpretation of events, rather than the events themselves. CBT is a talking therapy that helps patients assess their reactions to situations, replacing the worry cycle with more useful or realistic thoughts.
*Exposure therapy
The aim of exposure therapy is to gradually desensitize(使脱敏)the patients to the source of their phobia. ____18____ A person who fears spiders might place thinking about a spider at the bottom of the list, and having a spider move along his arm at the top. With the help of a psychologist, the patient systematically works their way through the list, using relaxation techniques until they are comfortable with each stage.
*Virtual Reality therapy
Exposure therapy isn’t a usable option for all phobias. ____19____ Advancements in virtual reality systems mean that patients can now face their fears through a headset rather than in the real world. ____20____ In the case of people with a phobia of flying, they can take a course of sessions in which they board a virtual plane and experience announcements, take-off and landing without having to buy a plane ticket each week.
A. Luckily, modern technology offers an alternative.
B. The patient ranks situations from least to most terrifying.
C. Instead, our brains can be retrained to overcome a phobia.
D. The aim of CBT is to change how we think about certain situations.
E. Someone suffering from a social phobia, however, will struggle to lead a normal life.
F. This enables patients to face their phobias, while knowing they are in no physical danger.
G. CBT is as effective as medication in treating many anxiety disorders.

It was the start of summer. For 15-year-old Daniel, summer usually meant bike rides, basketball games, and long afternoons at the park with his friends. But this year felt different — quieter, somehow.
Daniel’s neighbor, Mr. Wagner, had always been a big part of the neighborhood. He was the kind of adult kids actually liked to be around. Every winter, he helped clear snow off the sidewalks, even when no one asked. In the summer, he set up a sprinkler (洒水器) in his front yard for the kids to run through and handed out orange and grape juice from a little cooler. When Daniel hurt his knee trying to learn a skateboard trick, it was Mr. Wagner who cleaned the cut and covered it up. He even helped Daniel with his math homework once when he was stuck before a test. He didn’t have kids of his own, but he treated every child on the street like family.
That was why Daniel started to worry when he didn’t see Mr. Wagner outside anymore. No more chats, no more afternoon waves. Then one afternoon, an ambulance pulled into Mr. Wagner’s driveway. Daniel watched from his window, his heart sinking.
Later that evening, Daniel’s parents told him that Mr. Wagner had a serious sickness. His condition had worsened recently, and he now needed a wheelchair to get around — but there was no ramp (坡道) at his house, just three high steps leading to the front door.
The next day, Daniel and his friends took turns visiting Mr. Wagner. They brought him books from the library, helped water his garden, and even walked his dog. But Daniel knew that wasn’t enough. That evening, he gathered his friends under a big apple tree. “Mr. Wagner has done so much for us,” Daniel said firmly. “It’s our turn to help him.” The others nodded. That’s when the idea came — they would build him a ramp.

Building the ramp wasn’t easy. None of them had built anything before, but their determination to help Mr. Wagner kept them going. They watched tutorial videos online, asked their parents how to measure, cut, and fasten wood, and borrowed tools from neighbors. Under the hot sun, they worked with sweat rolling down their faces, learning through trial and error. They accepted Mr. Wagner’s orange and grape juice but refused his suggestion to take a break. Every afternoon, the sounds of tools mixed with laughter, turning their street into the liveliest place.
After a full week of hard work, the ramp was finally ready. Mr. Wagner came to the door in his wheelchair. Slowly, he rolled onto the ramp and down into the yard. For the first time in weeks, he was outside again. He looked at the kids, his eyes shining. He told them he had been feeling lonely, but now, thanks to the ramp, he felt part of the world again. That summer, the ramp became more than just a way for Mr. Wagner to get outside. It became a symbol of kindness, connection, and community.
