A
The ugly truth
“Happy birthday, Anne,” said my grandma, handing me a brightly wrapped parcel with a big red bow. It was my birthday dinner, and the whole family were there. “Thanks, Granny!” I said. I tore the parcel open. Inside was something very bright, very pink. It was the ugliest dress I had ever seen. “I hope you like it,” said Grandma. “You look so pretty in pink.” Frankly speaking, I was disappointed but I smiled as broadly as I could. “It’s beautiful. Thank you so much.” Grandma smiled happily. Well, I couldn’t tell her the truth, could I?
A white lie that hurt me
When I gave the dress to Anne, I saw the excitement in her eyes. She paused briefly when she first saw the dress. Then she smiled and told me it was beautiful. I knew the old and the young do not always share the same tastes and I was happy that she liked it. All the hours of sewing were worth it. It was a few days later that I learnt the truth. I heard Anne talking on the phone: “My grandma gave me this very pink dress. I really appreciate it but I don’t think I’ll ever wear it.” I stood there in silence. I felt cheated and it really depressed me.
A white lie is often told to protect others’ feelings, but it may bring unexpected hurt. Anne told a white lie to make her grandma happy, avoiding unpleasantness at that moment. However, when the truth came out, grandma felt cheated and sad. What we think is a kind lie may actually break trust. True kindness is not about hiding the truth, but about being honest in a gentle and caring way. A white lie can only hide unhappiness for a short time, while sincerity brings long-term warmth.
1. Why did Anne tell a white lie to her grandma?
A. She wanted to hide her real taste in clothes. B. She wanted to avoid being considered impolite.
C. Because she thought the dress was worth praising. D. Because she wanted to avoid hurting her grandma.
2. Why did the white lie finally hurt Grandma so deeply?
A. Because Anne’s words sounded extremely rude on the phone.
B. Because Grandma realized her effort and love were not truly accepted.
C. Because Anne lied to her many times before.
D. Because Grandma thought Anne didn’t like her at all.
3. What is the main message the writer wants to convey?
A. White lies can keep long-term relationships warm.
B. We should never tell any lies, even kind ones.
C. Sincere and gentle honesty is better than white lies.
D. Young people and the old never share the same tastes.
B
If you hear someone shout “Hey you!” from across the room, your reaction will vary greatly. These simple words carry rich implications: they may be a warm greeting from a close friend or a sharp call for attention from a stranger. This shows that communication relies not merely on vocabulary, but on tone, relationship and non-verbal signals.
Communication is a dynamic interactive process between a sender and a receiver. The sender encodes a message and transmits it through face-to-face conversation, video, telephone, email or social media. The receiver then decodes the message and sends feedback. This circular process continues until the exchange is finished. However, effective communication is not automatic; it requires awareness and skills.
To communicate competently, you must first analyse your audience: their age, social position, cultural background and expectations. Different relationships — stranger, friend, colleague or family member — demand different channels and styles. For instance, formal business negotiations with large enterprises generally require face-to-face communication with precise, direct and professional language.
Body language is equally vital, as it conveys unspoken attitudes. A sincere smile suggests engagement, while folded arms and avoiding eye contact often signal disinterest or resistance, which may cause misunderstanding or tension. You must also observe others’ body language to judge whether they understand or accept your message. If they appear confused, you should clarify immediately.
Furthermore, empathy plays a critical role. Putting yourself in others’ positions helps you recognize their emotions and perspectives. Even if you disagree with their opinions, understanding their feelings allows you to adjust your tone and expressions appropriately. Only by respecting different views can communication be smooth and efficient.
In conclusion, effective communication helps resolve conflicts, build trust and strengthen relationships. Mastering such skills requires continuous practice, but it will greatly improve both personal and professional interactions.
4. What does the author intend to show by using the example of “Hey you!”?
A. Body language determines the real meaning of words.
B. The same expression may convey different meanings.
C. Strangers usually communicate in an impolite way.
D. Short expressions are easier to understand than long ones.
5. According to the passage, which of the following is the foundation of effective communication?
A. Using modern communication channels.
B. Speaking in a formal and straightforward manner.
C. Understanding the characteristics of the listener.
D. Offering immediate feedback during the conversation.
6. According to the passage, why should people pay attention to others’ body language?
A. It helps speakers decide whether to adjust their communication.
B. It is more reliable than spoken words in every situation.
C. It can completely replace verbal messages in formal communication.
D. It helps avoid all possible misunderstandings during talks.
7. What is the most essential message the author wants to convey?
A. Body language determines the quality of communication.
B. Empathy is the only key to successful communication.
C. Effective communication requires skills and conscious efforts.
D. Choosing proper communication channels is the first step.

Honoured guests, teachers and dear students, it’s my great honour to give a speech on this special occasion. Today marks your formal passage into adulthood, a journey you have spent years preparing for. I have witnessed your growth from anxious Senior 1 freshmen to confident youngsters, fully equipped to face whatever lies ahead.
At school, you have come to realize the significance of responsibility. Instead of viewing it as a heavy burden, you should regard responsibility as a solid foundation for your future development. Just as a ship cannot resist storms without an anchor, a person lacking responsibility will fall victim to their own thoughtless and irresponsible deeds.
As students, you are responsible for your academic progress: completing assignments punctually, following teachers’ instructions and striving for excellence. Nevertheless, responsibility extends far beyond studies. When facing difficulties, you should reflect on your own faults instead of blaming others. Admitting mistakes bravely cultivates courage; devoting yourself to every task builds determination; and being honest shapes integrity. Thus, taking responsibility helps you form a strong character.
Furthermore, individual responsibility contributes greatly to social progress. Small actions can create remarkable changes, just like the boy who saved starfish by throwing them back into the sea. Your efforts, such as protecting the environment, ensuring public safety, saving energy or doing voluntary work, can improve society and inspire those around you. Joint efforts will continuously push society forward.
Dear students, embrace responsibility as you enter adulthood. Though responsibilities may be challenging, they help you mature. As the saying goes, “Jade is good-for-nothing if not carved.” Taking responsibility now will surely lead you to a bright and successful future.
8. The example of the ship and anchor is used to indicate that ________.
A. people with responsibility can overcome difficulties more easily
B. a strong character is a must for overcoming life’s storms
C. irresponsible people will definitely suffer from their own behavior
D. responsibility serves as a support to keep one steady in hard times
9. What can we infer about responsibility from Paragraph 3?
A. Students should focus on academic responsibility first.
B. Taking responsibility helps transform one’s personal qualities.
C. Blaming others is the main cause of difficulties in life.
D. Making mistakes is unavoidable on the way to strong character.
10. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. Introduction→Definition of responsibility→Examples→Conclusion
B. Background→Attitude towards responsibility→Benefits→Appeal
C. Opening→Individual responsibility→Social responsibility→Summary
D. Greeting→Importance of responsibility→Ways to be responsible→Quote
11. What is the core symbolic meaning of the paper plane and its shadow in the picture on the title?
A. Present potential→future growth B. Childhood dreams→adult reality
C. Current struggles→future success D. Individual effort→external support

The process is complex. Borrowed words first spread among bilingual speakers, then to others. ____14____ Over time, these words become more like native vocabulary and are easily accepted in daily conversations.
____15____ Some communities and countries, such as France, try to protect their native languages by creating new terms instead of accepting foreign words. The policeman on the beat walked along the street as he always did. It was barely ten o’clock at night. When he had walked about halfway around a certain block, the policeman suddenly slowed down. In the doorway of a store stood a man, with an unlit cigar in his mouth. As the policeman walked up to him the man spoke up quickly.
“It’s all right, officer,” he said. “I’m just waiting for a friend. It’s an appointment made twenty years ago. There used to be a restaurant where this store stands — ‘Big Joe’ Brady’s restaurant.”
“It was here until five years ago,” said the policeman. “It was torn down then.” The man in the doorway struck a match and lit his cigar. The light showed a pale face, with keen eyes, a square jaw and a little white scar near his right eyebrow.
“Twenty years ago tonight,” said the man, “I dined here with Jimmy Wells, my best friend. He and I were just like two brothers. The next morning I was to leave New York to make my fortune. We agreed that we would meet here again exactly twenty years from that date, no matter how far we had to come. I came a thousand miles to stand in this doorway tonight, and it’s worthwhile if my old partner turns up.”
“I’ll be on my way,” said the policeman. “Hope your friend turns up.”
“I’ll give him half an hour at least. Bye, officer.”
The waiting man smoked his cigar and waited. About twenty minutes later, a tall man in a long overcoat hurried toward him. “Is that you, Bob?” he asked.
“Is that you, Jimmy Wells?” shouted the man in the doorway.
The two men walked up the street, arm in arm. At the corner stood a bright drugstore. Each of them turned to stare at the other’s face. The man from the West stopped suddenly.
“You’re not Jimmy Wells,” he said angrily. “Twenty years is long, but not long enough to change the shape of a man’s nose.”

Popularity of learning Chinese
Nowadays, learning Chinese has become a global trend. More and more people around the world are showing great interest in Chinese, attending Chinese classes, learning Chinese characters and even practicing Chinese calligraphy in their spare time.
There are two main reasons for this phenomenon. On one hand, China’s rapid development has made it more influential in the world, attracting people to learn about its culture. On the other hand, Chinese culture, with a long history, is full of charm, which appeals to many foreigners.
In my opinion, the popularity of learning Chinese is a good sign. It not only helps spread Chinese culture but also builds a bridge for cultural exchange between China and other countries.

The tall man revealed his true identity to Bob coldly. He stated he was a policeman assigned to arrest Bob, who was a wanted criminal for serious offenses in the West. Bob was utterly shocked, his voice trembling as he argued he had only come to meet his old childhood friend Jimmy. The policeman then took out an arrest warrant and held it in front of Bob, explaining he had been monitoring him closely since Bob first stood in the store doorway. Overwhelmed, Bob’s face turned pale, his hands shook, and the half-smoked cigar in his hand slipped to the ground, its embers fading slowly in the cool night air.
Soon after, Bob received a note from his real friend — Patrolman Jimmy Wells. In the note, Jimmy wrote he had recognized Bob instantly by the white scar near his right eyebrow, a mark they’d joked about years ago. He confessed he couldn’t bear to arrest his dearest friend personally, so he asked a colleague to do it. Jimmy expressed deep regret, saying their friendship had always been his treasure, but his duty as a policeman came first. Bob read the note repeatedly, tears streaming down his face, finally realizing the kind policeman he’d spoken to earlier was Jimmy, the friend he’d waited twenty long years to see.
