Normally I pass my morning commute (通勤) absorbed in a book, headphones on. I miss a lot of what’s going on around me, but my reading hours are so limited and my “Books Read in2025” list is so embarrassingly short that I give up presence to get a couple of chapters in.
On a recent day, however, I kept my book in my bag and made a game of looking at the people around me and imagining what their voices sound like. This game isn’t really fun, as games go, but it keeps me occupied, noticing, engaged with the world rather than ignoring it.
In his poem “Everything Is Waiting for You,” David Whyte addresses the fundamental error of assuming separateness from everything and everyone else. “As if life / were a progressive and cunning crime / with no witness to the tiny hidden transgressions (越界).” He advises the reader to become alert. “You must note / the way the soap dish enables you, or the window latch grants you freedom.” The ordinary items around us are animate in his reading of the world. And not only that—— they’re likely to look on us favorably, to enable us, free us.
My retreat (躲避) into books while on the train is only partly about getting reading done. It’s also about shutting out distraction, because I think that whatever is happening around me is disturbing, at the very least extraneous to my central purpose, which is getting from A to B.
Sitting and just being in space with strangers, instead of retreating into a book or a phone, sometimes requires a mental shift. Who and what else is here What if these noise-canceling headphones are keeping me from hearing the actually quite charming voices of the people beside me If I want to feel more connected to other people, then what’s protective isn’t always productive.
Or, as Whyte instructs, “Put down the weight of your aloneness and ease into the /conversation.”
24. Why does the author usually bury herself in a book during her commute
A. To catch up on reading. B. To improve her public image.
C. To observe strangers secretly. D. To make the commute feel shorter.
25. What does David Whyte seem to think of the world in his poem
A. A test that challenges us.
B. A presence that supports us.
C. A stage where we perform alone.
D. A place where we make mistakes.
26. What does the underlined word “extraneous” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Irrelevant. B. Dangerous. C. Unusual. D. Essential.
27. What does the author encourage readers to do
A. Keep to yourself and avoid small talk.
B. Escape into books and block out noise.
C. Listen to inner thoughts and reflect on them.
D. Put down the headphones and tune in to others.

A challenge of teaching mathematics rather than, say, history is that the homework is a lot harder to come up with. After all, “Was Henry VIII a good king ” is a reasonable question to ask either a classroom of nine-year-olds or a lecture theatre of postgraduates. But “Solve this quadratic equation (二次方程式)” would leave the classroom nonplussed and the lecture theatre unimpressed. Maths is learned by doing and designing a problem that is easy enough to be accessible, yet hard enough to be satisfying, is a big headache in itself.
Partly for this reason, books that successfully communicate how mathematicians think, but are aimed at those not already in the field, are both valuable and rare. Now Sir David Spiegelhalter, professor of statistics at the University of Cambridge, has added to the category with The Art of Uncertainty. His new book will appeal to many more than just mathematicians, for its topic is universal: how to analyse chance, uncertainty and risk.
If a new virus is running wild and the majority of deaths are among those who have received a newer vaccine (疫苗), is that evidence that the vaccination program is harmful How much of top football teams’ performance comes down to luck rather than skill Professor Spiegelhalter’s exploration of such questions is delightful. First, he uses them to illustrate broader ideas about how probability and statistics work. So a discussion of vaccine safety proceeds to Bayes’s theorem, a procedure for improving one’s judgment of probabilities as new evidence comes to light. The joy of Professor Spiegelhalter’s approach is that he reaches this deep truth through nothing more than some intuitive (直觉的) assumptions and very simple maths.
Most important, though, is Professor Spiegelhalter’s skill at communicating these ideas. Much of probability and statistics can go against our intuition, and the maths behind it is often fearsome. But this is not a difficult book to read or understand.
28. What does the underlined word “nonplussed” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Impressed. B. Inspired.
C. Confused. D. Amused.
29. What is the biggest selling point of The Art of Uncertainty according to the author
A. It casts light on math thoughts.
B. It covers various topics.
C. It makes sense to ordinary people.
D. It satisfies maths professionals.
30. Why does the author mention Bayes’s theorem in paragraph 3
A. To prove the reliability of intuition.
B. To reveal the book’s academic nature.
C. To underline the deep truth of judgement.
D. To demonstrate Spiegelhalter’s writing approach.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. A master of math teaching.
B. A book on intuitive assumptions.
C. A discussion of risk management.
D. A guide to understanding probability.

Carbon removal is crucial for fighting climate change. Scientists at Salk Institute are making use of the natural capacity of plants to absorb carbon dioxide by enhancing their root systems. This optimization (优化) aims to increase the amount of carbon stored and extend the duration of its storage.
To design these climate-saving plants, the scientists are using a research tool called SLEAP — an AI software that tracks multiple features of root growth. Created by Salk Fellow Talmo Pereira, SLEAP was initially designed to track animal movement in the lab. Now, Pereira has teamed up with plant scientist Professor Wolfgang Busch to apply SLEAP to plants.
In a study published in Plant Phenomics, Busch and Pereira establish a new procedure for using SLEAP to analyze plant root phenotypes — how deep and wide they grow, how massive their root systems become, and other physical qualities. Prior to SLEAP, tracking the physical characteristics of both plants and animals required a lot of labor that slowed the scientific process. SLEAP uses computer vision (the ability for computers to understand images) and deep learning (an AI approach for training a computer to learn and work like the human brain) to help researchers process images much more quickly.
The application of SLEAP to plants has already enabled researchers to establish the most extensive catalog (目录) of plant root phenotypes to date. What’s more, tracking these physical root system characteristics helps scientists find genes (基因) associated with those characteristics, as well as whether multiple root characteristics are determined by the same genes or independently. This allows the Salk team to determine what genes are most beneficial to their plant designs.
“Our cooperation is truly proof of what makes Salk science so special and impactful,” says Pereira. “We’re not just ‘borrowing’ from different disciplines — we’re really putting them on equal footing in order to create something greater than the sum of its parts.”
32. What do the scientists at Salk Institute hope to achieve
A. Keeping more carbon in plants. B. Optimizing the use of energy.
C. Enhancing biological diversity. D. Reducing carbon absorption.
33. Why did Pereira create SLEAP
A. To generate plant images. B. To conduct research on animals.
C. To study climate patterns. D. To track features of root growth.
34. What will SLEAP help the scientists do
A. Pick out diseased plants in the forest. B. Collect samples of plant root systems.
C. Identify genes for desirable plant roots. D. Preserve the genes of endangered plants.
35. What can be inferred from Pereira’s words
A. Academic disciplines are of equal importance.
B. Computer programming is a must for scientists.
C. Interdisciplinary approach promotes creativity.
D. Cooperation outweighs competition in research.

I felt anxious when going into my room from school. Every day, my room was something different. The hours away at school were long enough to cause a terrible change to my peaceful harbor. Today was no exception.
As I entered the house, Mom greeted me with a smile. It seemed like nothing was wrong. But I was still doubtful about it. Yesterday, around the mouth of my favorite figurine (小雕像)was a chocolate cookie. Obviously, Callie had enjoyed the cookie so much that she wanted to share it with my angel.
I looked around for Callie, who had just turned three. I didn’t see her, but I heard the TV blaring (发出刺耳的声音)in the other room. As I examined the family room, I noticed it was pretty messy. There were toys all over the floor, but none of them seemed to be mine. Maybe she hadn’t entered today. I was so hopeful that I breathed a sigh of relief.
I pushed my room door open and saw damage. There were a few headless dolls, some broken blocks, and a few juice-stained stuffed animals. “She did it again” I screamed in anger. My mother ran up to me, embarrassed. She promised to put a Callie-proof lock on my door tonight. I felt better, because I knew that soon my room would truly belong to me. However, I was still angry with my little sister so I went into the family room to tell her how she had made life unpleasant for me. “Callie…” I started. “Hooray” she shouted.
She leaped off the sofa and hugged my knees with such happiness that I could only look down at her and smile. After all, she was only three and learning about the world in her own way. And she always chose to explore and destroy my room because she loved me, her big sister.

How to Achieve a Healthy Lifestyle in a Digital Age
In the digital age, many of us fall into unhealthy habits. We spend long hours staring at screens, lack exercise and often stay up late, which harms our physical and mental health.
Actually, technology can help us live better. Fitness apps record daily exercise, and health monitors track our sleep and diet. Online courses also guide us to do regular workouts easily.
To stay healthy, individuals should use digital tools wisely. Meanwhile, society should promote healthy digital habits. Only with joint efforts can we enjoy a balanced and healthy life.
答案】 As I looked down at Callie, her innocent face shining with excitement, my anger began to melt away. She held up a crumpled paper flower with sticky hands. “Sissy, I made this for you!” she giggled, placing it gently in my palm. I noticed there were crayon marks on her cheeks, and her tiny fingers were covered in juice. Suddenly, I remembered how she’d always follow me around, copying my actions and looking up to me. Her destruction wasn’t out of malice, but curiosity and a desire to be close to me.
I carried her back to my room and started to clean up the mess together. Callie happily helped pick up the broken blocks. When she tried to wipe the juice stains with a tissue, she only spread them further, making us both laugh. As we tidied up, I told her softly that my dolls and toys were precious to me, and she nodded earnestly. By the time the room was neat again, the paper flower sat on my desk, a sweet reminder of her love. I realized that a messy room was nothing compared to the joy of having such a lovely little sister, and our bond grew stronger than ever.
