When 16-year-old Boyan Slat went diving in Greece, he expected to see colorful fish and coral. Instead, he was shocked to find himself swimming through a sea of plastic bags and bottles.
This disturbing experience opened his eyes to the reality of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch,a massive accumulation of trash floating in the Pacific Ocean. At the time, most experts believed cleaning up this mess was impossible. They argued that because the plastic is spread over such a vast area, using ships with net s would take thousands of years and cost billions of dollars, which seemed like a waste of resources.
However, Slat refused to accept this defeatist attitude. While waiting for a flight, he suddenly realized a key principle: why chase the trash when the ocean currents can bring it to you He proposed a passive system using giant floating barriers that act like artificial coastlines. These barriers move with the waves, allowing the faster-moving plastic to be caught and concentrated in one area, while the marine life can safely swim underneath.
Slat was so committed to this vision that he dropped out of college to focus entirely on his project. He founded“The Ocean Cleanup”, a non-profit organization dedicated to ridding the world's oceans of plastic. The journey was far from smooth; his team faced severe criticism and technical failures during the early stages. However, instead of giving up, they analyzed every mistake and improved their design. Today, their technology is finally operational and has successfully removed tons of waste. The collected plastic is recycled into durable products like sunglasses, and the profits are used to fund further cleanup missions.
Slat's story serves as an inspiring reminder that age is just a number when it comes to solving global problems, and that with enough determination, we can turn a hopeless situation into a sustainable solution.
24. What was the key challenge in cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
A. The plastic was too heavy to be lifted by ships.
B. Plastic waste's wide spread made cleaning costly and unachievable.
C. The ocean currents were too strong for ships to navigate.
D. The plastic was mixed with marine life, making it difficult to separate.
25. How does Slat's passive system work to collect plastic
A. By using ships with net s to chase and catch the plastic.
B. By using ocean currents to concentrate trash.
C. By treating plastic with chemicals to make it small.
D. By using floating barriers to trap plastic with currents.
26. How did Slat respond to the doubts and technical setbacks in the text
A. He published papers to prove experts wrong.
B. He sought government support to solve technical issues.
C. He ignored the criticism and stuck to his original plan.
D. He adjusted his approach through learning from failures.
27. What is the author's attitude towards Boyan Slat's achievement
A. Admiring and supportive. B. Objective and optimistic.
C. Skeptical and cautious. D. Critical and disappointed.
C
Can music help you concentrate at work Researchers from the University of WalesInstitute in Cardiff conducted a new study, and it has some interesting results.
The research examined the ability of 25 people, aged 18 to 30, to remember information while listening to various sounds. In one task they had to remember a list of eight consonant(辅音) letters, which were dictated to them.
Participants in the study were tested under three different conditions: in a quiet environment, while listening to music they liked, and while listening to music they didn't like. The participants generally did better when they were working in silence. The background music seemed to make memorization and recall more difficult. However, scientists also found that listening to music before doing the tests seemed to help concentration.
“Despite describing their self-selected music as more pleasant, their performance was poor, just as it was when they listened to music they disliked,” explained one of the researchers. So,even if you' re listening to music you like, it' ll still interfere with your work.
This would appear to contradict the findings of scientists who have researched what is popularly known as the“Mozart Effect”. This concept was invented by French scientist Dr.Alfred A. Tomatitis in 1991. Tomatitis published a book, Why Mozart , which described what he believed were the healing powers of listening to Mozart's music.
He also suggested that Mozart's music could aid brain development. Later studies indicated it might enhance children's spatial intelligence, leading to a widespread belief that classical music could boost a child's IQ. The governor of the state of Georgia even once advocated allocating over $100,000 annually to supply classical CDs to every newborn in the state.
Another study seemed to further contradict the idea that music could help with concentration. The researchers found that surveyed university students mostly preferred
studying in silence. Those listening to music preferred instrumental songs, saying that lyrics are distracting.
So, if you' re studying for an exam, turn off your music!
28. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To prove that Mozart's music boosts IQ.
B. To recommend the best music for studying.
C. To compare different types of background sounds.
D. To indicate that silence is better for concentration than music.
29. What can be inferred about the“Mozart Effect”
A. It only works for children under 18.
B. It was first discovered by a governor.
C. It may have been overestimated by the public.
D. It has been proven to enhance adult intelligence.
30. The underlined word“distracting” in paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to .
A. disturbing B. favorable
C. remarkable D. discouraging
31. What does the author imply about background music
A. It best aids creative work.
B. Its effects are inconsistent across studies.
C. It enhances performance in concentration tasks.
D. It affects people differently based on preference.
D
The toy industry is pushing forward with AI chatbots built into stuffed animals and mini robots. These toys are flexible enough to conduct limited conversations with children and to respond to them just as they finish talking. Are these interactions enough to provide the“personalized education” one company claimed Will toys like Curio’ s Grem help or harm children's language development
The-more language that is addressed to children, the bigger their vocabulary will be. But these vocabulary words are not learned because they were spoken out of context, as current AI-infused toys do, but from caregivers who make the words come alive. Research shows that chatbot talk is unlikely to improve young children's language outcomes. In fact, if allowed to replace conversations with caregivers, these toys may impede (阻碍) children's language learning.
When a caregiver describes something that a child is interested in, children can learn its name. A chatbot is less able to teach children about their environments because it cannot see and describe a toy the child is holding. Even if it could see, it does not have prior knowledge about the toys a child owns. Language skills do not grow from simply hearing lots of words ——they grow from hearing words in conversations that capture the child's attention.
Finally, children are also seeking further information about the sounds of their language. The caregivers’ repetition of the word emphasizes its name while also giving the child more information about the sound of the word. If the child mispronounces the word, the caregiver will likely emphasize the correct pronunciation. Commercially available chatbots cannot reliably do this.
Quality language expands on what toddlers know, takes the child's perspective and past history into consideration, and responds to children's questions. We have seen some work that shows social robots can help preschool children learn vocabulary, and that conversational agents who ask older children to respond to educational television programs can help children learn. However, we need more research to know the effects these robots have on babies' and toddlers' language learning. Until that happens, we believe that the humans in toddlers' lives are responsible for conducting the conversations that grow children's language. As a researcher and his teammates state,“Our babies shouldn't be lab mice for toy companies.”
32. What is the author's main concern about AI toys
A. They break easily during use. B. They lack personalized content.
C. They may replace parent-child talk. D. They are too expensive for families.
33. How do children best learn vocabulary according to the passage
A. From watching TV shows regularly.
B. From meaningful caregiver conversations.
C. From the interaction with AI chatbots.
D. From hearing many words in various environments.
34. Why are AI chatbot toys unlikely to improve kids' language learning
A. They can only communicate with older children.
B. They have too limited a vocabulary for children.
C. They fail to teach words in meaningful contexts.
D. They cannot respond to children immediately.
35. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph
A. AI toys are safe for preschoolers. B. More research on AI toys is needed.
C. Toddlers should use more social robots. D. Toy companies have proved their products.

Your Hobby Could Help Keep Depression at Bay
Having a hobby does more than just fill free time and bring joy. A recent study has found a close link between having a hobby and lower rates of depression among aged people. 36 It also shows hobbies can improve their happiness and life satisfaction significantly.
The study covered more than 93,000 people aged 65 and older from 16 countries, includingChina, Japan, the US and several European nations. 37 Hobbies are not limited to one type; they can be gardening, painting, reading, making crafts, playing games, joining a club or even volunteering in communities.
Researchers followed the participants for four to eight years to collect and analyze data. 38 What's more, the results stayed the same even when other factors like income, marriage status and employment were taken into consideration.
39 According to lead researcher Karen Mak, hobbies can protect aged people from mental health decline. This positive connection exists across different countries and cultures.Hobbies help aged people feel in control of their lives, find a clear purpose and gain confidence in dealing with daily problems.
The relationship between hobbies and mental health is mutual. 40 On the one hand, people with better mental health are more likely to take up a hobby. On the other hand, keeping a hobby regularly helps people maintain a good mental state and stay positive. The study found hobby participation varies by country. China had a low rate partly because only social hobbies were surveyed, but the helpful link existed everywhere. Policymakers should encourage aged people to take up hobbies for better well-being.
A. Hobbies and mental health influence each other.
B. Some old people are unwilling to try new hobbies.
C. It suggests that hobbies are very helpful for their mental health.
D. They found a clear link between hobbies and fewer sad feelings.
E. This potential of hobbies is consistent across many countries and cultures.

Tom was a smart boy with a special way of thinking. He did particularly well in English writing, and his essays once impressed every teacher who read them. Yet everything changed after he went to senior high school.
With his parents busy with their work and having little time for him, Tom thought he had gained freedom from tight control. Soon, however, he felt bored with daily life. Nothing seemed interesting except the virtual world, which was far more exciting to him. Night and day, he lost himself in mobile games. He would lie on the sofa, eyes glued to the phone and thumbs dancing over the screen swiftly, unable to pull himself away. The games brought him instant excitement, but his once-excellent grades dropped sharply. like falling autumn leaves.
As graduation was drawing near and only fifty days remained before the final exam, anxiety flooded Tom's heart, eating him from inside. He saw his once-neat hair turn messy and dark circles under his eyes. He desired to change but could hardly focus on his studies or sleep well.He would pick up his phone out of habit, play for hours, and then throw it away in anger and regret.
Deep inside, Tom was desperate to make a change, but the games were too attractive and progress too slow to inspire him. Lacking motivation, he had no idea where to start.“Maybe someone can encourage me to begin again,” he whispered.
One afternoon, he dragged his heavy feet to Mr. Smith, who had guided him greatly in writing. He found the teacher tired, buried under a pile of papers. Tom hesitated at the door for a moment, then stepped in.
“Mr. Smith,” he murmured, eyes falling to the floor,“could you write me one encouraging sentence every day until the exam Just one sentence… to keep me going.”

A 篇
Base Weight(0-2kg) is$12.00; Additional Weight is+$3.00 per kg.。
Economy Service:“Delivery within 3-5 days.20% cheaper than Standard.” 明确提到“20% cheaper”且时效较慢(3-5天),完全符合题干中“save money”和“not in a hurry” 两个条件。
原文线索:“Our couriers will call you 30 minutes before arrival to ensure someone is home.” 同义替换为“To ensure the client’ s presence”。
24~27 BDDA
24. B 解析:根据文章第二段中的“They argued that because the plastic is spread oversuch a vast area, using ships with net s would take thousands of years and cost billions ofdollars”可知,专家面临的主要挑战是塑料垃圾分布面积太广,导致清理工作耗时且昂贵。
26. D 解析:文章第四段提到“Instead of giving up, they analyzed every mistake andimproved their design.”(他们没有放弃,而是分析了每一个错误并改进了设计。)。
中间段落使用了“refused to accept this defeatistattitude”(拒绝接受失败主义态度)和“committed to this vision”(致力于这一愿景)等正面描述。
文章最后以“So, ifyou’ re studying for an exam, turn off your music!”
(Thiswould appear to contradict the findings of scientists who have researched... the “MozartEffect”)。
(In fact, if allowed to replace conversations with caregivers,these toys may impede children's language learning.)
第二段指出,词汇并非因为被说出来就被学会,而是“来自让词语变得鲜活的看护者”(from caregivers who make the words come alive)。 A.

解析:A. adventure 冒险; B. journey 行程,旅途; C. holiday 假期; D. process 过程。

解析: A. noticing 注意到; B. showing 展示; C. forming 形成; D. hiding 隐藏。

Mr. Smith put down his pen and looked at Tom. Seeing his tired look and troubled state, he felt sorry for the boy who used to be excellent but was obsessed with game addiction. He was pleased that Tom wanted to make a change, yet he came up with a better idea. Simple encouragement might not work deeply, but asking Tom to write would make him reflect on himself and grow truly. So he smiled and said gently, asking Tom to write one encouraging sentence for him every day instead.
“What One sentence a day for you ” Tom raised his head, shocked. Though surprised,he was moved by his teacher's kindness and agreed without hesitation. The next day, he left his first short sentence on the teacher's desk. As days went by, writing calmed his mind and lit up hope in his heart. He gradually stayed away from games and became more positive. On the fiftieth day, his sentence showed his clear change and sincere gratitude, making Mr. Smith fully satisfied with his steady progress.
Mr. Smith put down his pen and looked at Tom. His usually sharp eyes softening as they fell upon the boy's untidy hair and the dark circles that spoke of sleepless nights. Though he saw the exhausted student before him, his mind drifted back to the passionate boy who once viewed the world with clear eyes and boundless energy. A wave of sadness washed over him,for he had watched Tom's light fade from afar without knowing how to intervene. Realizing that simple encouragement would not suffice for such a broken spirit, Mr. Smith leaned forward and slid a blank sheet of paper across the desk.“Tom,” he said in a low, steady voice,“encouragement fades quickly, but the words you write yourself are like a fire you can carry.”He tapped the paper gently.“I want you to write one sentence for me every day—— not a plea for help, but a truth about the person you are becoming.”
“What One sentence a day for you ” Tom raised his head, shocked. Surprised, he stared at the blank paper as if it were a foreign object, his fingers twitching with the phantom urge to tap on a screen. The silence in the room felt heavy with his hesitation until he finally reached out, his hand trembling slightly as he took the pen, its familiar weight feeling strange after so long. The next day, a neatly folded paper appeared on the teacher's desk, the single sentence representing an hour of wrestling with his own restlessness. As days turned into weeks, this daily ritual became an anchor; the nervous, mindless tapping of his fingers was gradually replaced by the deliberate, thoughtful scratch of the pen. The chaotic noise of the virtual world faded, giving way to the calm focus that once lived in his eyes, and he began to notice the afternoon light falling across his desk. On the fiftieth day, his final sentence was not a request, but a quiet declaration of a self-rediscovery, proving that even small words, written with purpose, possessed the power to rebuild a broken world.
Mr. Smith put down his pen and looked at Tom. His eyes, usually sharp and focused, grew soft as they took in the boy's messy appearance. He noticed the untidy hair that used to be so neat, and the tired shadows under Tom's eyes that told stories of too many late nights spent staring at a phone screen. The teacher didn't just see the exhausted student in front of him; he still remembered the boy who once looked at the world with clear eyes, boundless energy, and passion. A sudden sadness filled his heart; he had watched Tom's talent fade from far away, not knowing how to help. Now, with Tom standing in his doorway, looking more vulnerable than he ever had before, Mr. Smith knew a simple“you can do it” wouldn't be enough. He leaned forward, the pile of papers on his desk forgotten, and pushed a clean, white sheet of paper across the smooth wood. The sound of the paper sliding was the only noise in the quiet room.“Tom,”he said, his voice low and steady,“encouragement is like a quick flash of light —— it disappears fast. But the words you write yourself Those are like a small fire you can carry with you.” He tapped the paper with his pen.“I want you to write one sentence for me every day. Not a request for help, not a complaint, but one true sentence about the person you' re becoming. The one who knows a pen can do more than a phone screen ever could.”
“What One sentence a day for you ” Tom raised his head, shocked. He stared at the blank paper like it was something he'd never seen before, his fingers moving slightly as if they still wanted to tap on a phone. The quiet in the room felt heavy as he hesitated, but then he slowly reached out. His hand shook a little as he took the pen, its familiar weight feeling strange after so long without it. The next day, a small, neatly folded piece of paper showed up on the teacher's desk. It was just one simple sentence, but writing it had taken Tom an hour of fighting his own restlessness. As days turned into weeks, this daily habit became something that kept him steady. The nervous, mindless tapping of his fingers was slowly replaced by the careful, thoughtful scratch of the pen. The loud, chaotic noise of the virtual world faded away, replaced by the calm focus that used to be in his eyes. He started to notice the world around him again —— the way the afternoon sun fell across his desk, the sound of his own breathing as he concentrated. On the fiftieth day, his final sentence wasn't a cry for help, but a quiet statement. It was the sentence of someone who had found himself again, a full circle back to the boy who once made every teacher proud, proving that even small words, written with purpose, could fix a broken world. In the end, Tom learned that true strength doesn't come from escaping into a virtual world, but from facing the real one with courage. He discovered that the pen, like the heart, holds the power to rebuild what was lost —— not by erasing the past, but by writing a new future, one honest word at a time.
Smith put down his pen and looked at Tom.” 以及根据第二段首句“What One sentence a day for you ” Tom raised his head, shocked.
2、由续写第二段首句内容“What One sentence a day for you ” Tom raised his head, shocked.
