Knit (针织) for Nature
Who We Are
The Penguin Foundation works to protect Phillip Island's native wildlife and enhance the natural environment. One of the key projects is our long-running Knits for Nature program.
Why Your Help matters
For over 20 years, this program has served two critical purposes. Initially, hand-knitted jumpers were essential for saving Little Penguins affected by oil spills (泄漏). When Little Penguins get oiled, they can poison themselves by eating oil. Knitted jumpers help to prevent them from reaching their feathers (羽毛) until rescuers wash them clean. Thanks to the generosity of knitters worldwide, our care center is now well-stocked with these life-saving jumpers for 40,000 penguins.
Today, the program’s primary goal is to seek financial support. We now use these jumpers, dressed on penguin toys, as popular souvenirs sold in our stores. Each sale directly supports our ongoing wildlife protection work.
How You Can Help
We invite you to keep knitting creative jumpers for us! Themed designs such as those featuring Christmas colours, football themes, world flags, or ocean themes are welcomed as souvenirs. For safety, we cannot accept items with buttons or sharp decorations that could pose a danger to children. Please ensure jumpers stick to the following sizes in the picture.
A huge thank you to all the wonderful knitters who have contributed to making a difference for Phillip Island’s precious wildlife!
1. How do the jumpers help save Little Penguins
A. By lowering care costs. B. By cleaning oily feathers.
C. By acting as important barriers. D. By drawing rescuers’ attention.
2. What is the current purpose of the Knits for Nature program
A. To raise funds. B. To prevent oil spills.
C. To educate the public. D. To inspire creative design.
3. Which of the following jumpers is acceptable
A. A red jumper with a secure button.
B. A green jumper with a knitted dolphin.
C. A 18cm-wide jumper with a football logo.
D. A 15cm-long jumper with a UN flag pattern.
B
This summer I came face-to-face with three deep-rooted fears: heights, bears, and ageing.
Two friends joined me on a four-day wilderness getaway, and since we were all in our seventies, we decided we’d better go while we still could. Our adventure began with a scary drive up a winding mountain road.
On one hike, I found myself hanging onto a wire on a bridge made of two partly rotten (腐烂的) logs, suspended high above rushing rapids. I would never have attempted it without our guide ahead, mouthing encouraging words. Fixing my eyes on her boots, I inched along the shaky logs. Somehow, I made it across, flooded with a rush of intense excitement and huge relief.
Later, after spotting bear tracks, we were told to make loud noises, which soon became a game once the tension faded.
Until suddenly, time stood still.
We had just crossed a stream when the guide whispered, “There’s a bear.” I looked up in disbelief and saw not one, but two, about ten meters above us— the brown mother in front, her cub behind.
Though scared speechless, I couldn’t help noticing how beautiful they looked in their natural setting. I wondered if it would be my last memory. As they started towards us, we recovered enough to shout and wave our hiking poles. Taken aback, they stopped, and then slowly turned away. Another fear was overcome!
On our final morning, after a quiet, thoughtful walk through the forest, we were asked to bring back a “meaningful” stick, rock, and leaf to share what would “stick” with us, what “rocked,” and what we would “leaf” behind. The bond of friendship would stick with me. Women supporting one another truly rocked. And I hoped to leave some fears behind.
Our guide ended by expressing her admiration, praising not only our fitness but also our positive attitude, and saying she hoped to be like us in another thirty or forty years. Those unexpected words warmed my heart and eased my fear of being “over the hill.” Being valued for what we had accomplished felt like winning an Olympic medal — even if just for participation.
4. How did the author cross the bridge
A. By taking mindful steps. B. By rushing across it bravely.
C. By using her sense of direction. D. By having the guide drag her over.
5. Why did the bears leave
A. They were attracted by the natural setting. B. They were afraid of the noise of the rapids.
C. They were surprised at the group’s actions. D. They were threatened by the guide’s rocks.
6. Why did the guide ask them for a stick, rock, and leaf
A. To pick up some souvenirs. B. To reflect on the journey.
C. To symbolize their teamwork. D. To check their observation skills.
7. What does the underlined phrase “over the hill” in the last paragraph mean
A. Past the peak of youth. B. Too high to go down.
C. Out of place in society. D. Beyond physical limits.
C
We all know that water is tasteless. But it happens from time to time: you pick up the bottle of water you didn’t finish yesterday, and it tastes strange. Most often, you tend to drop the bottle in the trash bin, believing that the water has gone bad. But is it true
According to Time, of course not, taste has little to do with quality of water. As is mentioned in Time, when water is exposed to the air for 12 hours, carbon dioxide interacts with the H2O in the water, and the pH value lowers slightly. As a result, the water has a different taste.
“But it’s most likely safe to drink,” Norwegian expert Truls Krogh told Science Nordic. “If the water is covered and of good quality to start with, in principle it can last a thousand years. That’s because when water is fresh, it contains little organic matter. As long as water is held in clean glasses or bottles, no pollutants will enter it to harm our health.”
People in countries like the US, the UK and Australia usually drink tap water. According to Time, if tap water is drunk within six months, the chlorine (氯气) in the water will be enough to kill any bacteria and keep it safe to drink.
However, there are also some exceptions. If you accidentally put your fingers into water or store water in unclean containers day after day, microorganism (微生物) will enter the water. With the help of surrounding temperature, and sunlight streaming through windows, these microorganisms multiply quickly. Sooner or later, the water will be full of the unfriendly bacteria. And if you drink the water too often, then you’re more likely to be ill.
And what about water in plastic bottles Heat and plastic are a bad combination, US researcher Kellogg Schwab stresses. When plastic bottles are used at high temperatures, they produce a chemical called BPA. BPA is something that affects hormones (荷尔蒙) and research has tentatively linked it to “several health damage, including heart disease and cancer”, Time reported.
Schwab suggests replacing disposable (一次性的) plastic bottles with the refillable containers made of metal or glass to deal with BPA.
8. The purpose of the first paragraph is to ________.
A. introduce a topic B. draw a conclusion
C. show an example D. analyze a phenomenon
9. Which of the following may Truls Krogh agree
A. Covered water can last for a thousand years.
B. If the water tastes different, we shouldn’t drink it.
C. Although kept fresh, water may still have much organic matter.
D. The water held in a clean container is likely safe to drink.
10. Why do water microorganisms increase in number
A. Because the water is stored in clean containers.
B. Because of the surrounding temperature and sunlight.
C. Because the water contains a lot of organic matter.
D. Because chlorine in the water fails to kill bacteria.
11. What can be the best title of the passage
A. Why Water Is Tasteless B. How to Get Clean Water
C. Does Water Really Go Bad D. Learn to Protect Water
D
The technology for speech-recognition systems has advanced greatly since its appearance in the1950s. Many voice systems can understand the language when spoken at a normal conversational rate. But even the advanced human-machine interfaces (人机交互) used today are unable to trick the listeners into thinking a computer is a human. Why is this Simply put, it’s because human beings rely on more than words to convey ideas or interpret messages, such as tones, facial expressions, body movements, and objects in the world around them.
One significant recent achievement in the field of talking computers is virtual personal assistants(VPAs) on mobile phones. If you tell a mobile phone VPA that you want to schedule a lunch with a friend, it can set the appointment in your phone in seconds. The VPA can also hold a basic “conversation” and has earned fame for its elementary sense of humour. Still, the humour is preprogrammed and can be triggered only when human users speak certain key words.
While the potential for “real” communication between a human and a machine may seem exciting, this possibility concerns some people. Some experts worry about people’s attachment to these machines and fear that the art of successful human-to-human conversation will be undeveloped in younger generations. They worry that people won’t be able to display the right emotion or tone in conversations because they haven’t been practising those skills. Others fear that machines will take over functions that were traditionally performed by humans, such as customer service. Another concern often associated with the development of new technology is the invasion of privacy (侵犯隐私). When people use certain speech-recognition applications, they leave behind an audio track of their speech. When you ask a VPA for directions, your speech is sent and saved to a remote server for processing. This digital trail may lead to data mining, or the collection of large quantities of personal data.
For now, however, the continuing evolution of speech-recognition software is worth expecting. Leading companies in the field hope to make human communication with machines as seamless as possible, just like communicating with another human.
12. According to the text, what can a VPA do
A. Entertain users with its original jokes. B. Enable people to regard it as a human.
C. Hold preprogrammed conversations. D. Display the right tones in conversations.
13. Which situation reflects the concerns mentioned in the text
A. One VPA service was priced higher for protecting users’ privacy.
B. An airline bore high costs for applying VPAs to its online service.
C. An app failed to offer the right direction when given spoken instructions.
D. Some teenagers became more socially awkward due to the addiction to VPAs.
14. What is the purpose of the text
A. To inform readers of the double-edged quality of a new technology.
B. To inspire readers to explore the future of a new technology.
C. To promote the application of a new technology.
D. To stress the convenience of a new technology.
15. What might be the best title of the text
A. The worries over VPAs. B. Listening to“a real person”.
C. The world of technology. D. Talking to technology.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many people today feel tired in mind as phone alerts, short videos, and broken information compete for their attention. This can hurt connections in the hippocampus, the brain’s memory center, and raise the risk of forgetting. ____16____
Reading strengthens the brain. A study found that reading changes the brain’s structure. Researchers observed that individuals who engaged in reading, even if they learned later in life, improved cognitive (认知的) efficiency. ____17____ Experts recommend these daily practices to rebuild deep reading capacity.
Exercise improves brain health. ____18____ A study found that participants who engaged in strength training three times a week for six months saw measurable growth in the hippocampus, while those who did not exercise experienced age-related reduction. Researchers recommend four categories of brain-friendly exercise: moderate aerobic activity like swimming; high-intensity interval training for experienced exercisers; skill-based sports combining movement with thinking and resistance training, such as weightlifting.
____19____ Quality rest is important for memory consolidation (巩固). During non-REM sleep, the hippocampus “replays” daytime experiences, transforming short-term impressions into long-term memory. Lack of sleep breaks this process, and catching up later does not fully make up for the damage.
Music awakens the brain. Music activates several brain regions at the same time. ____20____ Musicians, for example, often show enlarged brain areas linked to fine motor skills and pitch recognition. Listening to or practicing music can therefore serve as a cross-sensory “workout” for the brain.
A. Going to bed early protects the brain.
B. Catching up on sleep repairs the harm to the brain.
C. Physical activity benefits not only the body but also the brain.
D. Luckily, there are some accessible strategies to sharpen the mind.
E. Regular physical activity contributes significantly to our well-being.
F. It can enhance hearing motor control and even academic performance.
G. Recalling song lyrics and summarizing articles are all useful exercises.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
With three little babies, I never took a break, completely ignoring any self-care. When I was too tired to make myself dinner, I’d just eat the kids’ leftover cereal (麦片粥). I thought this was a great plan to lose some weight and called it the “Cereal for Diet.” Back then,I knew nothing about nutrition. Of course, the Cereal for Diet failed, as did all my other attempts.
One day, after cleaning up all the mess my kids had made, I went out for a walk. I passed a gym. I looked away.Healthy people went there, but this was not me. While turning away,I saw an ad for a six-month fitness challenge. I continued my fast walk in the opposite direction, but that sign just stayed on my mind.
I still remember what finally motivated me to sign up for the challenge. It was a ten-minute period in which my son threw his spaghetti plate straight up, sending noodles and sauce flying everywhere. As soon as my husband got home,I said, “You’re in charge.”
I made a beeline for the gym, marched straight in and said, “Fix me.” And I was assigned a young and fit trainer, Emily. She asked what my goals were for the six-month challenge. At that moment, I was speechless. Noticing my embarrassment, Emily just handed me the heaviest weights I had in my life and said, “Okay, so in six months you will compete in a body-building show.” I tried explaining, “No, I don’t want to do a show. That sounds scary.” She ignored my fear, and we jumped into strict workouts and nutrition planning.
Over the next six months, Emily forced me to focus on myself — my wants and my needs. I learned to see food as strength and sweat as progress. I learned how to fuel my body instead of starving it, balancing proteins, carbs, and fats. Emily pushed me past my limits, correcting my form, timing my breaks, and cheering me on when I wanted to quit. I improved every day in the gym.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day, Emily handed me an application form.

My favorite traditional Chinese festival is the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. On that day, families gather to have a big dinner, admire the bright full moon and eat mooncakes, a symbol of reunion.
I love it most because it brings my family together, filling our hearts with warmth. Traditional festivals are precious treasures of Chinese culture, carrying our ancestors’ wishes and emotions. We should cherish and pass them on forever.
Thank you for listening!
答案】
One day, Emily handed me an application form. “You’re ready,” she said with a confident smile. It was for a local body-building show, the very thing I’d once feared. My heart raced as I looked at the form, but then I thought of all the progress I'd made. I took a deep breath and filled it out, determined to face my fear. I knew this was a chance to prove to myself that I could achieve something I never thought possible.
Soon, I jumped into weeks of preparation. Every day, I spent hours in the gym, following Emily’s strict workout plan. I also paid close attention to my diet, making sure I got the right nutrients. As the show day drew near, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. But with Emily’s constant encouragement and support, I felt more and more confident. Finally, the big day arrived, and I stepped onto the stage, ready to show the world what I’d accomplished.
