Laser (激光) technology is set to revolutionize space communication, potentially allowing people to have video chats with family and friends while on long space trips: SpaceX, a leading player in the space industry, is pioneering laser-based communication technology for satellites. Last October, US startup Muon Space took up SpaceX’s offer, aiming to use the technology to establish a high-speed satellite connection, as reported by tech magazine PCMag.
Laser-based communication is widely regarded as the future of space communication. According to NASA, the term “laser” stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. In a laser beam, light waves are aligned in peaks, making the beam narrow and bright — ideal for maintaining focus over long distances.
Traditionally, satellites rely on radio waves for sending and receiving information. Both laser and radio waves travel at the speed of light, but lasers can carry far more data. For instance, NASA notes that downloading a two-hour HD movie with lasers takes just eight minutes, compared to over 26 days with radio waves.
Lasers also offer enhanced security due to their thin beams, which leave smaller “footprints” This reduces the chance of signals being intercepted or disrupted by others, as stated in the national magazine. Additionally, laser equipment is lightweight and consumes less power, freeing up more space on spacecraft for scientific tools.
However, the narrow laser beam presents a significant challenge: lasers are typically targeted at satellites 500 kilometers above Earth, which move thousands of kilometers per hour. Moreover, clouds and fog can interfere with laser signals, though more ground stations in adverse (恶劣的) weather areas can mitigate this issue.
While laser communication technology has not yet been widely adopted, its market is expanding rapidly. Fortune Business Insights predicts the market could reach 29.52 billion (about 210.19 billion yuan) by 2032. Some experts even suggest that as the technology matures, it may gradually supplement radio wave communication in most space missions by 2040.
8. Which of the following best explains the working feature of a laser beam that benefits long-distance space communication
A. Light waves in it travel at a speed faster than radio waves.
B. Its light waves are aligned in peaks, making it narrow and bright.
C. It can carry more data than radio waves due to its larger footprint.
D. It consumes less power, which ensures stable transmission over distance.
9. What does the underlined word “intercepted” probably mean in paragraph 4
A. Blocked. B. Occupied. C. Provided. D. Strengthened.
10. Which measure is mentioned to address the problem of laser signal disruption by bad weather
A. Increasing the power of laser equipment on spacecraft.
B. Building more ground stations in areas with poor weather.
C. Adjusting the wavelength of laser beams to avoid interference.
D. Using heavier but more stable laser devices for communication.
11. What does the passage imply about the future of laser-based communication
A. Its market growth will slow down as the technology matures.
B. It will completely replace radio wave communication by 2040.
C. It will play an increasingly important role in space communication.
D. It will only be used in a few space missions due to technical limits.
D
For hundreds of years, people have had different explanations for why ice is slippery. Now, scientists in Germany have a new explanation.
Martin Müser is a scientist in Germany. He teaches at Saarland University. He and his team created a model of ice on a computer. This model let them study the ice closely. They used the model to see how the ice would change when it touched another surface. For example, they looked at how ice changed when it touched a boot, a car tire, or an ice skate. They saw that when the ice touched another surface, changes happened to the ice’s molecules. A molecule is the smallest unit of a substance that has all the properties of that substance. For example, a water molecule is the smallest unit that is still water. It is so small that you cannot see it with your eyes. Ice is frozen water. It has a crystal (晶体) shape. Its molecules are arranged in a neat pattern. That’s because water is a type of molecule called a dipole (偶极子). One side has a slight negative electric charge. The other side has a positive charge. So when water freezes, the molecules line up in a regular structure. It’s almost like little magnets (磁体). But what happens when a boot touches the ice Dipoles within the boot will attract dipoles in the top of the ice. It’s like two magnets coming together. So as the boot moves, the dipoles in the ice move, too. Now the neat pattern of the ice begins to fall apart. This is called frustration, says Müser. The ice “kind of melts without really heating.” The dipoles in the boot provide a stickiness. That stickiness pulls ice molecules out of order. These molecules, no longer behave like a crystal. Instead, they become a thin layer of water. It sits on top of the ice.
Usually ice melts due to pressure or heat. But in this case, solid ice changes into liquid water as defects mess up its crystal structure. That is why ice can be slippery even at extremely low temperatures. Robert Carpick is a scientist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He and his team have shown similar crystal defects in diamond. These defects can turn diamond surface slippery, too.
So what’s the solution to keeping you from slipping on ice in winter “I would say, put on cleats (防滑鞋),” says Müser. “That’s really the only way.”
12. What did Martin Müser and his team do FIRST in the article
A. They looked at a boot touching ice.
B. They watched ice patterns fall apart.
C. They made a computer model of ice.
D. They saw how ice molecules change.
13. How did the dipoles in the boot affect the ice molecules
A. They melted the ice molecules with heat.
B. They pulled the ice molecules out of order.
C. They turned the ice molecules into a crystal.
D. They put the ice molecules into a neat pattern.
14. Why is diamond mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To compare the physical structure of diamond and ice in detail.
B. To explain how diamond can be melted without pressure or heat.
C. To prove crystal defects are a common cause of surface slipperiness.
D. To show diamond is more slippery than ice in extremely low temperatures.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Scientists find how to melt ice with pressure and heat
B. Scientists finally know why icy surfaces are so slippery
C. Researchers discover why ice freezes into crystal structures
D. Researchers prove ice is slippery only in extremely cold weather

Reading can improve literacy and language skills. However, research shows that reading fiction books might have several other benefits for teens.
Reading fiction books might help teenagers develop their understanding of “who they are”. ___16___ Our identities are made up of our personalities, experiences, values, goals, thoughts, and beliefs, and help us understand why we think, feel, and behave in certain ways. When we emotionally connect with a character in a book and feel immersed in a story, our own identities temporarily expand to include the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of the characters we are connecting with. In this way, fiction books provide an opportunity to explore different possibilities for ourselves, and to reflect upon the parts of our identities which are important to us. ___17___
Fiction books might also help teenagers to develop their understanding of other people and their ability to take others’ perspectives. ___18___ It develops throughout our teenage years as our social worlds become increasingly complex. Connecting with fictional characters might help readers to strengthen their perspective taking skills.
Connections with texts can also help readers navigate difficult emotions and understand their experiences. ___19___ Teens have to navigate the transition to high school, changing relationships with their peers, increased extra-curricular commitments, and are generally becoming more aware of the social and political world around them. Teens say reading gives them an opportunity to escape from their everyday lives.
___20___ While we often focus on attainment outcomes, reading also helps teens develop their self-understanding and understanding of others, and can support their emotional well-being at a particularly unrestful period of life. With the teen years being a particularly vulnerable time for reading habits, it’s important we support teens in finding and accessing books they enjoy to help them experience all these benefits.
A. Perspective taking is an important social skill.
B. Reading is a process of personal growth.
C. Fictional stories present identities vastly different from our own.
D. Reading can have numerous benefits for teenagers.
E. The teenage years are often a period of great change.
F. This process is important for teens to learn who they are.

To everyone, school days are considered as the best days of their life and they cherish the memories for the rest of their life. I also have numerous memories of my school days and I miss the day when I got caught for school bunking (逃学) .
Recently I have passed my college entrance examination and now I’m waiting for university admission. When I sit for studying the university admission materials, the past days appear before my eyes. I start missing the days when I was a student of the seventh grade at the Kendriya Vidyalaya in Hazratpur in Firozabad. There were some other students with me and we formed a group. All of the group members used to occupy the last benches. Thus we were named as the “backbenchers”. Most of the time, the little troubles in the class were caused by us. But the teachers did not punish us severely or seriously. After any of the trouble, it became a practice of the teachers that they would ask us questions about our study and they could not stump (难倒) us with the academic questions. So, they did not punish us.
But one day, luck did not favor us. Unfortunately, none of the backbenchers brought the copy that was used to answer the questions. So, we planned to skip the class. In fact, we planned to bunk off school that day. Accordingly, all of us got out of school boundary by climbing the wall. Everything went right until one of us failed to cross the wall. He fell on the ground and got injured. His shout for help attracted everyone. The school staff came to his help and inquired about how he fell down. The boy told everything about the school bunking. When the boy was asked about the names, he described everything about us. We were identified! Not far away, our headteacher Mr. Smith was standing there angrily.

【答案】Dear Diary,
Today our school held the activity “Experience the Charm of China”, which really immersed me in the profound beauty of Chinese culture and left me an unforgettable impression.
We watched a wonderful calligraphy show first, where the artists wrote Chinese characters with smooth and powerful strokes, making me totally fascinated. Then we tried paper-cutting by ourselves, and with the teacher’s guidance, I successfully made a beautiful paper flower, a work that filled me with great pride.
This activity is more than a simple experience; it lets me truly feel the greatness of Chinese culture. I will cherish this memory and keep learning more about traditional culture to inherit and carry it forward.

The following day, a heavy silence hung over our classroom. We backbenchers sat rigidly on our usual seats, our heads drooping like wilted flowers, afraid to even breathe loudly. Every second felt like an hour as we waited for Mr. Smith. When he walked in, his stern gaze swept across the room, and the silence grew even thicker. Instead of scolding us harshly, he first asked about the injured boy’s condition. Then he said solemnly, “Bunking school isn’t just breaking rules—it’s putting your lives at risk. Your cleverness in studies should be used wisely, not to escape responsibilities.” His words made us feel guilty and ashamed, and we all lowered our heads deeper.
Mr. Smith then announced our punishment: organizing a school safety awareness campaign. At first, we were confused, but soon we understood his intention. We worked together after school—designing posters about the dangers of wall-climbing and rule-breaking, writing speeches, and preparing small skits. On the campaign day, we nervously shared our experience and lessons with other students. To our surprise, everyone listened carefully and praised our work. Through this task, we realized the importance of school rules and safety. It was not a harsh punishment, but a precious lesson that taught us responsibility. Till today, this memory remains vivid, reminding me of the care hidden in Mr. Smith’s strictness.
