Look and predict
Look at the picture and predict what are they talking about
1 Read the story and talk about its main idea.
Mary and her cousins would go every month for a big family meal at their grandparents’ house. Their grandfather often gave them a few coins, saying, “You can buy yourself something.” None of them saved their money. They spend it all! The grandparents, aunts, uncles, and parents thought this was not good — the children would never learn to manage their pocket money. So they decided to have a test. They wanted to see what the children could get with the coins within a year.
Tom, the smallest kid, spent all his money on sweets.
Jim was strong-willed. He wanted to win the test. He saved every cent. He was the clear winner.
Reading
Then there was Mary. She loved the violin, but the family couldn’t pay for her violin lessons. So Mary went to her neighbour, a violinist. Mary offered him all the coins, asking the violinist to teach her how to play. It wasn’t much money, but seeing Mary’s excitement, the violinist agreed. He taught her happily for months. Later, the two played together in the park. They were very successful, and Mary was able to buy her own violin. Years later, Mary became a very famous violinist.
Spending money on self-improvement brings long-term rewards.
2 Read the story again and fill in the table.

1. They wanted to see what the children could get with the coins within a year.
主句结构:主语是They,谓语是wanted,to see... year 作宾语。宾语从句结构:引导词what(在从句中充当及物动词“get”的宾语)+ 主语the children + 谓语could get + 方式状语with the coins + 时间状语within a year。
Language points
e.g. They wanted to check what gifts they could buy with the pocket money before Christmas.
She wanted to know if her friends could arrive at the station within an hour.
2. Tom, the smallest kid, spent all his money on sweets.
the smallest kid 同位语

sb. spend + 时间/金钱 + (in) doing sth.
e.g. They spent a lot of money building their new house.
3. Mary offered him all the coins, asking the violinist to teach her how to play.
长难句分析:该句为简单句。主语为Mary;谓语为offered;
双宾语为him(间接宾语)和all the coins(直接宾语);逗号后asking the violinist to teach her how to play 是现在分词短语作伴随状语,表主动伴随动作。
offer sb. sth.=offer sth. to sb.
e.g. He offered me a book.=He offered a book to me.
teach sb. sth.
teach sb. to do sth .
