第二部分 阅读 (共两节,满分50分)

The remarkable travel and consumption figures recorded during the 2026 Qingming holiday have drawn widespread attention from economists, policymakers, and the media. With 840 million cross-regional passenger trips and 135 million domestic tourist trips, the holiday has become a vivid illustration of China’s strong domestic demand and the effective coordination between government policies and market vitality.
One of the most striking features of this year’s Qingming holiday was the simultaneous boom in multiple consumption sectors. While scenic spots and transportation hubs were packed with travelers, the film industry also celebrated a record-breaking box office. Over 3 million screenings were arranged nationwide, the highest ever for a Qingming holiday, and total box office revenue surpassed 300 million yuan. This shows that consumers are no longer satisfied with just travel; they seek a comprehensive leisure experience that combines sightseeing, entertainment, and cultural enrichment.
Behind the booming numbers lies a carefully designed policy environment. Weeks before the holiday, the Ministry of Transport had issued guidelines to enhance traffic capacity on major highways and railways. Local governments introduced measures such as half-price tickets for key scenic spots, extended museum opening hours, and improved parking facilities. In addition, the State Administration of Radio and Television encouraged cinemas to schedule more screenings of popular films to meet public demand. These proactive steps reduced travel friction and boosted consumer willingness to spend.
The holiday also highlighted a shift in consumption pared with previous years, travelers showed a stronger preference for “experience-based” rather than “sight-seeing-only” trips. Cultural tourism, including visits to historical sites, museums, and folk custom events, gained particular popularity. In cities like Xi’an, Suzhou, and Luoyang, bookings for hanfu photo shoots and traditional craft workshops increased by over 150% year-on-year. This trend reflects a deepening cultural confidence among young consumers.
Moreover, the Qingming holiday consumption boom carries important implications for macroeconomic policy. Economists point out that stable job markets and rising household incomes have laid a solid foundation for consumption recovery. The strong holiday data may encourage the government to continue or even expand stimulus policies in the cultural tourism sector. Some experts have suggested introducing consumption vouchers for the May Day holiday to sustain the momentum.
However, challenges remain. The surge in travel volume put pressure on transport systems, with some highways experiencing long traffic jams and popular scenic spots reaching maximum capacity. Environmental concerns also arose, as waste disposal at some tourist sites became a problem. These issues remind policymakers that while stimulating consumption is important, infrastructure and environmental management must keep pace.
Overall, the 2026 Qingming holiday has demonstrated the powerful engine of China’s consumer market. It offers a glimpse into a future where holidays are not just breaks from work but vibrant drivers of economic and cultural life. As one tourism expert put it, “Every holiday is now a stress test for our economy — and Qingming 2026 has passed with flying colors.”

Growing up in Canada, Benjamin Gulak took part in science fairs from a young age. Drawing had also been a part of Gulak’s life, and he even did an abroad program of fine arts study in Italy during high school. Driven to try selling his art, he worked with some leading art galleries (画廊) in London and Miami. Over time, he began connecting artists he’d met on travels from developing markets like Cuba, Egypt, and Brazil to the gallery owners he knew.
“The results were amazing because these artists were used to selling their work to tourists for $50, and suddenly they’re hanging work in a high-end gallery and getting 5,000 pounds,” Gulak said. “It was the same artist but different buyers. Traditional galleries usually act as gatekeepers. Their picky selection (挑剔的选择) process is why many galleries usually show similar artists’ works. There are plenty of creative minds out there whose great art has never been seen outside of the local market.”
For a class project at college, Gulak built a system that tried to guess the types of art that would do well in a gallery. As a computer scientist, he later started NALA, which stands for Networked Artistic Learning Algorithm (算法). The company allows artists to upload works and choose their listing price. Gulak notes that not all art will sell. “If you’re making rock paintings, there may not be a big market,” he said. “Artists may price their work higher than buyers are willing to pay, but the algorithm works to put art in front of the possible buyers based on style preferences and price points.”
Gulak was once visiting Egypt when he discovered a beautiful painting on the street. Gulak found a local artist, Ahmed Nofal, and bought some works. Later, he brought Nofal to take part in World Art Dubai, an international art fair. The artist’s work was so well-received there. “When artists visit NALA, we discuss together, sharing ideas. These experiences also give me a unique view, pushing me to explore new partnerships and fresh projects,” Gulak said.
6. What can be learned about Benjamin Gulak
A. He prefers digital art to science.
B. He has a rich artistic background.
C. He supported himself in several ways.
D. He found creative ideas through travels.
7. What does Gulak say about traditional galleries
A. They aim at wealthy art collectors.
B. They have influenced popular art styles.
C. They leave many talented artists unnoticed.
D. They slow down international art exchanges.
8. NALA mainly benefits the artists by ______.
A. providing training in art marketing
B. setting higher prices for their works
C. getting their art into famous galleries
D. matching artworks with suitable buyers
9. What does Gulak suggest about his partnership with artists like Nofal
A. It is a difficult process.
B. It is a win-win situation.
C. It is a short-term success.
D. It makes NALA well known.
10. Which of the following words can best describe Gulak
A. Calm and careful.
B. Funny and energetic.
C. Creative and supportive.
D. Confident and hardworking.
C
On the occasional cold clear autumn night, I was hiking through the dark forest with my GMO wolf. Yes, my best friend is a genetically modified organism (转基因生物) , deliberate selection has produced the wonder that walks by my side.
Our world is changing rapidly. In the last 5 decades, global population has fully doubled, with 3.7 billion hungry mouths added to our planet. During this same time span, the amount of land suitable for agriculture has increased by only 5%. Miraculously, this did not result in the great global famine (饥荒) one might have predicted.
How do scientists modify a plant so that it makes more food than its parents did We could treat each harvest like a litter of wolf pups and select only plants bearing the fattest, richest seeds for the next season. This was the method our ancestors used to engineer rice, corn and wheat from the wild grasses they encountered.
During my childhood, advances in genetic technologies allowed scientists to identify and clone the genes responsible for repressing (抑制) stem growth, leading to shorter, stronger stalks that could bear more seed — the high-production crops that feed us today. The 21st century has brought with it a marvelous new set of high-tech tools with which to further quicken the process of artificial selection. Plant geneticists can now directly edit out or edit in sections of DNA using molecular scissors. We can minimize a plant’s weaknesses while adding to its strengths, and we don’t have to wait for seasons to pass to test the result.
It is the transformative potential of these techniques to quickly supply the next-generation crops required for upcoming climate change that has led me to believe in the safety and function of GMO plants in agricultural products. We need more GMO research to feed the world that we are creating.
I love the quiet forest that stands between my lab and my home. But I know that as a scientist, I am responsible first to humanity. We must feed, shelter and care for one another as our first priority, and to do so, we must take advantage of our best technologies, which have always included some type of genetic modification. We must continue as before, feeding the future as we feed ourselves, and each year plant only the very best of what we have collectively engineered. I keep the faith of my ancestors each night when I walk through the forest to my lab, and my GMO wolf does the same when she guards my way home.
11. Why does the author mention the wolf in the 1st paragraph
A. To advise people to keep wolves as pets.
B. To change people’s attitude towards wolves.
C. To persuade readers to welcome the new technology.
D. To introduce a technology used to humans’ advantage.
12. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage
A. With GMO technology, famine has been ended.
B. GMO technology will help weatherproof future crops.
C. Artificial selections make high-production plants possible.
D. The author believes technology should contribute to future generations.
13. What can be learned about modifying a plant
A. The general public show strong faith in GMO plants.
B. One way for ancestors to change a plant was to clone some genes.
C. It takes scientists seasons to know whether their selection is correct.
D. Modern techniques help speed up the artificial selection by altering DNA.
14. By “I keep the faith of my ancestors” (last para.) , the author means _________.
A. to trust that technology can handle future agricultural challenges
B. to continue selecting the best seeds for the next season’s planting
C. to preserve the forest paths while walking to the laboratory nightly
D. to maintain the practice of keeping modified wolves as companions
15. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage
A. Engineered Food — To Be or Not To Be
B. Engineered Food — Feeding Future Generations
C. GMO Technology — A Driving Force in World Peace
D. GMO Technology — Turning Wolves into the Best Pets
