Taxable items often are goods or services that are considered unnecessary or luxuries, while necessary or essential things are often tax-free. Here are some unusual state taxes.
Kansas Hot- Air Balloon Amusement Tax

Determined to help maintain the wild blueberry’s reputation as a superior product, the government imposes a tax on anyone who grows, purchases, sells, handles, or processes the delicious little blue rascals. The tax of three quarters of one cent per pound of fresh wild blueberries helps fund research to support the industry.

I come from a mountainous land where Tajik is my native tongue. I learned Russian and English, but Chinese seemed unclimbable. When I arrived in Hangzhou, I could recognize characters but could hardly speak. I was quiet, tentative, anxious about making mistakes. Motivation It wasn’t enough. What I lacked was “structure”.
One afternoon I attended a poetry recital. I heard Chinese verses, felt their rhythm, and realized that I needed more than words; I needed a “structure”. I designed my own daily plan — write 25 Chinese characters every day, about two hours each session; play soft piano melodies in the background to make study calm and avoid stress; tell myself, “Don’t be afraid of making mistakes — just start.”
Soon, mistakes felt less scary. I remembered how as a child I learned to speak my first words, stumbling and falling, but trying again and again. My teacher’s words echoed, “Fear of mistakes prevents learning”. That structured habit made learning Chinese feel less like a chore and more like a part of me.
In Hangzhou, I joined in cultural events. Once, teaching children English, I sang with my guitar. As they smiled and sang along, I saw myself in their eyes — once fearful, but persevering. This experience ultimately transformed more than just my language skills — it taught me patience, empathy, and the true value of cultural exchange.
Now, I no longer translate in my head; I laugh and dream directly in Chinese. I have come to understand that language is far more than a tool — it is an entirely new lens through which to see life.
So, if you are learning a new language, do not wait for motivation to find you. Build your own “structure”, immerse yourself in the culture, and dare to speak your truth.
24. What does the underlined word “structure” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. Playing piano melodies. B. Memorizing more words.
C. Attending a poetry recital. D. Making a regular study plan.
25. Why did the author see himself in the children’s eyes
A. They were faced with the same fear. B. They shared similar learning experiences.
C. The children taught him some core values. D. The children reminded him of his childhood.
26. What does the author think of language as
A. A way of having fun. B. A shortcut to success.
C. A window into the world. D. A tool for earning a bread.
27. What can we conclude from the author’s experience
A. Language learning requires patience. B. One should avoid mistakes in learning.
C. Proper methods count in language learning. D. Cultural exchange is a must to master Chinese.
C
The great elephant stands in the hot African sun. Slowly the beast lifts its head and its thick trunk delicately curls around the leaves of a nearby tree, pulling out the leaves and politely slipping them into its mouth.
The beast’s great gray skin is partly broken and aged from the African sun. Some mud drops on one side from its last trip to a nearby river. Its rough hair sticks out from all over its skin and two large, white tusks curve elegantly from either side of its mouth.
Somewhere a lion roars and something else gives a loud high shout. A vulture (秃鹫) drifts over far above this world, barely a black dot in the sky. The buzzing of the countless bush insects seems to collectively shift up in high tune, almost like the whole of the savanna (热带草原) was singing some song that only they knew.
I peer through the lens at this scene. The zoom lens shows almost every detail of the elephant: the three small cuts in its left ear from playing as a baby around thorn trees, the scar down its front leg where a lion caught it unaware as a young adult, and weathering on its great, valuable tusks from decades of living in this unforgiving grassland on a dusty continent.
And then the elephant looks at me. It looks at me with those big, eyelashed eyes with a warmth coming outwards from a vast, hidden depth there. I can suddenly feel its soul, and feel the line of elephants that came before this one, trailing back to the very beginnings of this great savanna. We will never understand what wonders this ancient being and its kind have seen and whispered to each other across the ages on this old, sacred grassland.
It looks at me, and it looks through me and sees me. The elephant knows I am there. It always did. It is not running away, nor is it fighting. It accepts and forgives. It loves. But, mostly, it just feels sad. It feels sorry for me. I cannot do this anymore.
I take my eye off the sights and hand the gun back to my partner. “Let’s go home,” I said in a quiet voice, “let’s just go home.”
28. Which word can best describe the elephant in the first two paragraphs
A. Mysterious. B. Depressed. C. Aggressive. D. Graceful.
29. What does the shift in focus from the elephant to others imply in Paragraph 3
A. The elephant is about to be attacked.
B. The author is losing interest in the elephant.
C. The elephant is part of a larger and living world.
D. The author wants to show the savanna’s dangers.
30. How does the author feel when seeing through the lens
A. He is deeply moved and filled with sympathy.
B. He is overwhelmed by the elephant’s strength.
C. He is annoyed at the presence of other animals.
D. He is shocked and scared by the elephant’s scars.
31. What can we learn from the passage
A. Nature calms our anger. B. Nature purifies our souls.
C. Nature heals our wounds. D. Nature enriches our imagination.
D
According to a study published in Ostrich: Journal of African Ornithology, climate crisis and overfishing have led to a shocking 95% drop in African penguin populations across two key breeding colonies in South Africa. The research focused on colonies located on Dassen Island and Robben Island, revealing that between 2004 and 2012, more than 60,000 penguins starved to death there.
The primary cause behind this tragedy is the disappearance of sardines, the penguins’ main food source. What makes the situation even more heartbreaking is their moulting period (换羽期). African penguins moult annually to replace worn- out feathers, a 21-day land-bound period without feeding. To survive this period, they must build up sufficient fat reserves beforehand.
However, the number of sardines off western South Africa has dropped to just 25% of its peak except for three years since 2004. Changes in the temperature have made the fishes’ spawning (产卵) less successful while the amounts of fishing have remained large in the region.
Dr Richard Sherley, from the Centre for Ecology and Conservation at the University of Exeter, emphasized that the losses in these two colonies are far from isolated. “These declines are mirrored elsewhere,” he stated.
Conservationists are taking action on the ground, by building artificial nests to shelter chicks, managing predators and adults and chicks who need mercial fishing with large nets to trap fish has been banned around the six largest penguin-breeding colonies in South Africa.
It is hoped this will “increase access to prey for penguins at critical parts of their life cycle”, said the study co- author Dr Azwianewi Makhado, from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment in South Africa. Yet, Professor Lorien Pichegru, who was not involved in the research, warned and emphasized “Urgent action is needed to address low fish stocks — not just for penguins, but for all species dependent on them.”
32. What can we know about the moulting period of African penguins
A. It happens every other year. B. It involves feeding undersea.
C. It demands enough fat storage. D. It requires them to stay in water.
33. What caused sardine’s population to decline off western South Africa
A. Overconsumption by penguins. B. Temperature changes and overfishing.
C. Artificial nests and commercial fishing. D. The introduction of its natural predators.
34. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. Where fishing is banned. B. How chicks are rescued.
C. Why artificial nests are built. D. What measures have been taken.
35. What can we infer from Professor Lorien Pichegru’s words
A. We should lay emphasis on cooperation. B. Protection for sardines should be prioritized.
C. Efforts to offer food to penguins have paid off. D. Penguins and fish stocks are loosely connected.

根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Everyone sends texts. It’s simple — one message goes out, and another comes back. ____36____ They smile, wink (眨眼) and cry. Without much notice, emojis (表情符号) change how messages feel.
Researchers often ignore these tiny images. But Eun Huh from the University of Texas at Austin and her team decided to take a closer look. ____37____
Think about your last text. Did it have an emoji Most likely it did. Nearly everyone uses them. But emojis aren’t just decorations. They work like tiny signals of emotion and bring life to plain words. ____38____ The researchers looked at this effect closely. Their analysis showed something surprising. People feel more connected to those who use emojis. It’s not about picking the right emoji. The magic lies in using them at all.
Why do emojis work so well They make conversations feel softer and friendlier. They can help to reduce misunderstandings since tone gets difficult to express over text. They also act like little touches of warmth. ____39____ Most importantly, they can do what words sometimes can’t: show that you care.
____40____ This one focused on imagined situations. People weren’t texting real friends during the test. The researchers suggest testing real-time chats next. The experts pointed out that this study included mostly U.S.-based participants. Emoji meanings can shift across cultures. What works in one place might not in another. And there’s one more question waiting. What happens when emojis conflict with words Like a smiley face paired with sad news. Future studies might explore those mixed signals.
A. Somewhere in between, emojis appear.
B. That sense of being heard led to stronger friendships.
C. Every study has limitations and this one is no exception.
D. They called them more responsive and the chats felt warmer.
E. A simple heart can completely change the tone of a message.
F. They draw attention and show effort, even in rushed conversations.
G. Her study examined emojis’ role in improving relationship closeness.

Jane’s family used to live in a modest but cozy house on a quiet street in New York. A white wooden door stood at the entrance, slightly worn from years of use, and two wide windows faced the street, letting in soft morning light. In front of the house grew an old maple tree, whose shade covered the yard every summer and whose red leaves always announced the arrival of autumn. It was not the size of the house that mattered, but the sense of belonging it gave to everyone who lived there.
Everything was taken away in a single night. A sudden wildfire swept through the area, moving faster than anyone had expected. Jane and her parents escaped with only a few personal belongings. When they were finally allowed to return, nothing remained but ashes and broken walls. Their home, along with everything inside it, was gone forever.
Since then, the family had been staying in a government-arranged temporary shelter. The room was clean but cold, and it never truly felt like home. Jane noticed that her parents spoke less and smiled less. Her mother often stared silently out of the window, while her father tried to stay busy, as if work could keep his sadness away. The coming of winter only made things harder.
As Christmas drew near, the shelter was decorated with simple lights, but the holiday spirit felt distant to Jane’s family. In the past, this was the season when her parents would put up decorations and play music at home. Now, those traditions seemed painfully far away. Seeing her parents’ low spirits, Jane felt a deep ache in her heart. She wished she could do something to bring back even a small part of what they had lost.
One evening, while scrolling through her phone, Jane came across a post shared online. It was about an artist who offered to paint pictures of homes destroyed in the New York fire, free of charge, so that families could keep a lasting memory of what they had lost. At the end of the post, a simple note caught her eye: “If you need help, you may contact me at the number below.”

【答案】Dear Bob,
I’m thrilled to hear about your plan to get fit during the winter break! It’s a fantastic idea to stay active and healthy.
If you enjoy independence and self-paced workouts, individual sports like running or swimming are excellent choices. They offer flexibility and allow you to focus solely on your own progress. However, if you’re looking for motivation and social interaction, team sports such as basketball or soccer might be more suitable. They foster teamwork and make exercising fun with friends.
I hope this helps! Have a great time working out.
Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】Possible version:
An idea slowly formed in her mind. Taking a deep breath, Jane picked up her phone and got through to the number. On the phone, she explained what her family had been through and described the house in careful detail. After digesting her emotional words, the artist paused and then promised to represent their home on the canvas. Days passed slowly, and Jane checked her phone again and again in anxiety. Then one afternoon, a parcel finally arrived. Upon seeing the long-anticipated painting, she, without a moment’s delay, rushed off to find her parents.
Carefully, Jane gently handed the newly received picture to her parents. They leaned closer, hardly breathing. The house in the painting looked alive, filled with light and warmth. Tears rolled down their faces, but this time they were not only from sadness. A soft smile appeared, breaking the long silence. Jane felt her heart lighten as she watched them. The shelter no longer seemed so cold, for the picture had brought their memories — and their home — back to them.
