On July 12, 2024, sudden flash floods hit Heping Village in central China’s
Hunan Province. 24-year-old Li Wei, a new college graduate, turned his trip home into a life-saving task. He braved fast-rushing floodwaters to rescue (营救) 12 stuck villagers.
Li had returned to his hometown just two days before the disaster, preparing for
an important coming exam. The continuous heavy rain lasted 38 hours nonstop,
making the nearby mountain river rise above its banks quickly. By 5 a.m., most of the village’s low-lying areas were covered by 2 meters of water. Houses were badly
damaged, and all outside roads were completely cut off, leaving many villagers stuck in flooded homes with no way to call for help.
Most villagers had left for the safe hillside before the water rose sharply, but Li headed straight for the flooded area the moment he heard cries for help. He picked up a rubber boat and set off at once to begin the rescue. “I grew up here, so I know every path and corner of the village like the back of my hand,” Li said. “I couldn’t just stand by and watch.”
The water was far more dangerous than Li expected, with broken tree branches and house pieces that could easily damage his boat. He made over 10 round trips in 6 hours. At one point, his boat was broken by a sharp stick, and he fell into the water. He caught a broken tree, fixed the boat with a rope, and continued his rescue work,
even as his phone and exam review materials were washed away. By late afternoon, he brought all 12 villagers to the safe area, with no one hurt. The local government awarded him for his bravery, but Li said anyone would have done the same.
4 .Why did Li Wei return to his hometown before the flood

B .To receive an award as a volunteer.
C .To help with the flood prevention work.

Reading Art: Art for Book Lovers is a special book about one of our most
common daily things — the book. It brings together nearly 300 pieces of art about
books from museums around the world. Paintings of people reading have shown up in art for thousands of years, even long before the modern books we use today were
invented. In artists’ works about books and reading, we can see warm moments shared by people everywhere, no matter which culture or time they come from.
In this “book of books”, the art pieces are chosen and put in order to show the connections between different times and cultures. We can see scenes of children
learning to read at home or school, where books help build close relationships
between the old and the young. Adults are shown alone in different scenes: lost in a book, deep in thought, or enjoying a quiet free moment. These scenes may have been painted hundreds of years ago, but they record moments we can all relate to.
In paintings, books are sometimes used as a sign to show a person’s cleverness, money and social position, or what they believe in. Before printing tools were widely used, books were very valuable, and even works of art themselves. These days, books are cheap and even often thrown away after use. So artists use them as materials to
make new art, turning book covers, pages or whole books into paintings and other art pieces.
People once thought the development of digital tools would make printed books no longer popular. In the 21st century, printed books seem very old, but they are still as fun to use in your own way as any e-reader. A book only comes to life when you
use it: you open the cover, turn the pages, read the words, and can even write notes or draw lines. Unlike our busy online lives, where every piece of information we look at is recorded, a printed book still offers a totally personal, “off-line” experience.
8 .What is the main topic of the book
A .The history of printing tools around the world
B .Art pieces about books and reading across the world
C .Warm stories of children learning to read at home
D .Differences between printed books and e-readers
9 .What are the chosen artworks in the book mainly about
A .Books and reading B .Family and school
C .Happiness and loneliness D .Work and fun
10 .What do the underlined words “relate to” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A .Paint B .Understand C .Create D .Miss
11 .What is the author’s attitude towards the printed book
A .Unsure B .Negative C .Supportive D .Uncaring
D
Making new friends is not easy — even for smart animals that can talk well.
Recently, researchers at the University of Cincinnati carried out an interesting study. They focused on how parrots make friends with birds they don’t know. The study was of great significance as its purpose was to understand the process of how parrots form social connections with unfamiliar birds.
The researchers put groups of parrots in a big cage where they could fly. Some of the birds had never met before. The team carefully observed the birds’ behavior,
focusing on how they acted with each other. They paid special attention to how close the birds allowed each other to get and if they showed friendly behaviors like cleaning each other’s feathers or sharing space. A total of 179 interactions (互动) were
recorded to see how new friendships were formed in the birds.
The study showed that parrots were watchful when meeting strange birds.
Instead of rushing to make contact, they moved slowly toward each other, watching for any signs of danger. For example, they would stop and look around carefully
before taking a few more steps. Over time, as they got used to seeing each other and felt more comfortable, they started showing behaviors like cleaning each other’s
feathers, sitting together, and sharing food or even interacting closely. Some pairs would gently clean each other’s feathers, which is a clear sign of trust.
These findings help us better understand how animals make friends and also
give us some ideas about human social behaviors. By studying how parrots take time to build trust, researchers can use this knowledge to improve social relationships in both animals and humans. This research is a good reminder that in both the animal
and human worlds, trust grows slowly, and relationships need time to develop.
12 .What was the purpose of the study
A .To observe how parrots look in a big cage.
B .To learn how parrots make friends with strangers.
C .To study why parrots are smart animals.
D .To record the number of parrots in the wild.
13 .What does paragraph 2 mainly describe about the research
A .Its usual difficulties. B .Its research process.
C .Its research method. D .Its scientific basis.
14 .Which of the following behaviors shows a sign of trust between parrots
A .Moving quickly toward each other. B .Stopping and looking around carefully.
C .Gently cleaning each other’s feathers. D .Sharing space in the big cage at first. 15 .What can we learn from the findings ofthe study
A .Parrots find it hard to make new friends.
B .Trust grows slowly in both animal and human worlds.
C .Parrots prefer to stay in cages rather than nature.
D .Human social relationships are much better than animals’.

Why Should We Protect Wild Animals
Wild animals are an important part of our planet’s ecosystem. 16 Yet
many of them are facing serious threats (威胁) caused by human activities. It’s time for us to take action to protect them before it’s too late.
17 One of them is the loss of habitats. As cities grow larger and forests are cut down, wild animals lose their homes and food sources. For example, many
kinds of birds can’t find enough trees to build nests or enough insects to eat. Another big threat is illegal (非法的) hunting. Some people hunt wild animals for their fur,
horns (角), or meat to make money 18 Besides, pollution, including air, water and soil pollution, also makes living conditions worse for wild animals. It poisons
their food and damages their health.
So what can we do to help First, we should learn more about wild animals and the problems they face. 19 For instance, we can tell our family and friends not to eat wild animal meat or buy products made from wild animals.
Second, we can support wildlife protection groups. They work hard to save
endangered animals, create safe habitats and fight against illegal hunting. Even small actions like donating money or volunteering can make a difference.
Third, we should try to live in a more environmentally friendly way. 20
Using less paper, saving water and reducing rubbish can all help protect animal living spaces. If everyone makes an effort, we can build a better world for both animals and humans.
A .Knowledge is the first step to action.
B .There are many reasons why wild animals are in danger.
C .They help keep nature balanced and provide great value to humans.
D .This has pushed some rare species to the edge of extinction.
E .Zoos are good places to see different kinds of wild animals.
F .We can plant more trees and reduce pollution in our daily lives.
G .Many wild animals are dying out faster than we can imagine.

Water pollution is getting worse these days. Polluted water not only harms our health but also endangers plants and animals that live in or depend on it. It’s high time that we took action.
To reduce pollution, we can avoid throwing trash into rivers, use less chemical cleaners,
and save water in our daily lives. Even small changes, like turning off taps tightly, can help cut
down on waste and protect our water. By making these simple habits part of our daily routine, we can truly make a positive difference to our planet.
Let’s work together to protect our precious water resources. Every drop and every action matters!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
