Which Scottish Traditions Should Be Preserved for the Future
A new project has been set up to document centuries-old traditions in Scotland, including diverse crafts, folklore, arts, and events. The project invites people to suggest traditions to include so that efforts can be made to preserve the practices. Here are some traditions that may be
considered.Stonehaven’s fiery New Year tradition
Every Hogmanay, the high street of Stonehaven (斯通黑文) fills with hundreds of locals
and tourists. They go there to watch a procession of people swinging fireballs — a tradition started
by fishers in the 19th century. The ritual (仪式) is said to burn away the bad spirits ofthe past year, welcome a fresh new year, and bring good luck to all.
Ross Milne, who takes part in the ceremony each year, said it was “unique”. “It’s hard to explain exactly why, except for a kind of passion behind it,” he said. “It speaks to the heart of the Scottish people. It’s a tradition we are very proud of, and it deserves to continue.”The Ecclefechan tart
The Ecclefechan tart (埃克尔费亨挞) is a sweet treat named after the village in Dumfries and Galloway. The delicacy was first invented in the19th century by the local baker when sugar, dried fruit, and spices (香料) became more affordable. The tart has since become a regional
specialty, associated with special occasions like weddings or Christmas.
“It’s the kind of dish that almost every family would have its own recipe for. In Scotland, we are known for having a very sweet tooth, and it’s a flavor we truly enjoy,” Sarah Rankin, a Scottish chef, said. “Regional dishes like this play an important role in cementing (巩固) culture within very small geographical areas.”Shinty
Hugely popular in the Highlands, shinty (苏格兰传统曲棍球) is played on a grass pitch
with sticks and a small hard ball. Two teams of 12 players aim to score goals into their opponent’s net.
Aaron Duncan-McLeod, a volunteer coach, said,“People don’t get paid to play shinty. It’s purely for the love of the game, for the love of your community and the heritage of your country.” He said this ancient tradition was a “vital keystone” of Scottish culture. “It has endured through
really challenging circumstances,” he added. “So that’s why people want to make sure that it continues and doesn’t die.”Shaetlan
Shaetlan (设得兰语) used to be considered a dialect of Scots, but in October 2025, it was officially recognized as a distinct language in its own right.
Songwriter Claire White grew up speaking Shaetlan at home. Now she is raising her children with the language in the hope that they will pass it on to the next generation.
“You know how it’s enriched your own life and how it enables you to express things that aren’t easily expressed in other words,” said White. “I hope that both future generations and
people today will have this way of expressing themselves, so that everyone can be their authentic (真正的) selves.”
1 .What can we learn about Stonehaven’s Hogmanay fireball tradition
A .It was designed to compete with other towns’ festivals.
B .It began as a celebration organized for tourists.
C .It was created to honor the 19th-century fishermen in Stonehaven.
D .It is thought to scare away bad spirits and bring good luck.
2 .A local school wants to host a workshop where students can practice a tradition and make something they can take home. Which tradition is most suitable
A .Shinty. B .The Ecclefechan tart.
C .Shaetlan. D .Stonehaven’s fireball ceremony.
3 .Why does the author quote (引用) people like Ross Milne, Sarah Rankin, Aaron Duncan-McLeod, and Claire White
A .To compare different opinions on whether the traditions should continue.
B .To make the description more vivid and engaging for readers.
C .To show the emotional and cultural value of the traditions.
D .To prove that these traditions are still widely practiced today.

A letter from a prime minister, a child’s notebook, a prized sporting medal: what do these
things have in common On the surface, not much at all. But for Tony Armstrong’s Extra-Ordinary Things, that doesn't matter in the slightest.
In this five-part ABC TV series and accompanying exhibition at the National Museum of Australia, it’s not really the objects themselves that matter; it’s the stories and people behind them that construct a story about the nation and its past. This project sees popular television presenter
Tony Armstrong travel the country in search of items for his special exhibition.
Some objects capture major moments in Australian history. The anti-Iraq war protest that
saw the words NO WAR painted on the sails ofthe Sydney Opera House in 2003 is represented by the paint tray used for the act. Through a memorial pin held by Harbour Bridge construction
worker George Killen’s great-granddaughter, we hear the forgotten story of how one worker
selflessly dived into the cold waters of the harbour below to save a friend. Turns out, the ordinary can be extra-ordinary.
This doesn’t mean the project shies away from the dark aspects of our past. In one episode,
Armstrong speaks from the edge of the “exclusion (排斥)zone” that marked the area in Perth where First Nations people, only seventy years ago, were not permitted to enter freely.
Sometimes light-hearted, sometimes heart-breaking, Extra-Ordinary Things is largely
optimistic in tone. It is an example of how storytelling can bridge divides(分歧), allow us to face realities, and enable us to make choices that might go some way to addressing wrongs.
When I asked Armstrong what he hoped the project would achieve, he said, “I hope it gets people telling stories.” Whether you’re asking your grandma or your friends to share their
extraordinary things, his advice is to “be eager to discover, be curious” .
4 .What do we know about the objects listed in paragraph 1
A .Tiny but represent official records.
B .Rare but tie to everyday life.
C .Ordinary but hold special meaning.
D .Historic but hide personal connections.
5 .Why is the memorial pin mentioned in paragraph 3
A .To state a concept. B .To present a fact.
C .To explore a rule. D .To justify an opinion.
6 .What message does Armstrong want to convey in his project
A .Historical facts should be known.
B .History is made up of fun stories.
C .Painful things should be left behind.
D .History is full of injustice.
7 .What does Armstrong encourage viewers to do
A .Collect ordinary items for the exhibition.
B .Engage their family with better stories.
C .Seek stories with a curious mind.
D .Study professional storytelling techniques.

My first journey to Norway began with an accident that almost killed me on the deck of a deep-sea fishing boat.
One afternoon, having finished my task, I climbed the ladder to the deck (甲板). I had
scarcely lifted my head when the sky disappeared. In its place came a heavy iron cage, swinging with blind force and hitting me right in the face. I remember no pain at first — only darkness.
When I recovered my senses, I was on my hands and knees. My cheek hurt, and my teeth
lay broken in my mouth. An older fisherman, Arneson, found me and carried me to my room.
During the slow days that followed, he accompanied me and spoke of his boyhood in Andalsnes, among Norway’s fjords (峡湾) and mountains of such beauty that he dared not return. He feared that the real place might destroy the perfect image in his heart. I listened attentively because I had begun to ask myself: was I, like Arneson, just living on an image ofwho I had been before the
accident.
His stories, repeated in those long days of recovery, fixed Norway in my imagination as a
place where I could find the answer. Thus, when I was well enough to travel, I started my journey, moved less by courage than by a quiet hope for relief. From Norway’s capital I journeyed to
Andalsnes, the town he had described with such gentleness. The following day I climbed Aksla. The path was steep, and the pain in my legs was sharp but honest. Each step seemed like a
question: “who are you now ” At the top, sitting among stones and thin grass, I looked at the
silent peaks and understood that the sea had not sent me here by chance. I had crossed water and land only to discover that the journey was inward.
I had come to Norway hoping the mountains would heal me. Instead, I learned that a single blow does not merely wound the body; it breaks open the self and sets it wandering. Yet in that
wandering I found something steady. My memories, my fears, and the voices of those who had walked beside me formed a quiet fellowship. In their company, I did not find a cure, but I began, at last, to find myself.
8 .What accident occurred to the author on the fishing boat
A .Facing a heavy storm. B .Falling from the boat.
C .Suffering night blindness. D .Being hit by an iron cage.
9 .Why does the author mention Arneson in Paragraph 3
A .To describe the author’s daily life on the boat.
B .To explain why Norway is an attractive country.
C .To introduce what inspired the author's journey.
D .To show how the author recovered from the accident.
10 .What can we infer about the author from Paragraph 4
A .He was weaker than before. B .He regretted going to Norway.
C .He reflected on his true self. D .He lost his way on the mountain.
11 .Which of the following might be the best title of the passage
A .A Fatal Accident B .A Friend of Pure Heart
C .A Memory of the Sea D .A Journey of Self-Discovery
D
We’ve all seen this happen in a science-fiction movie: The super heroes jump into a shaky spaceship and escape the bad guys by flying through the asteroid(小行星)belt, where huge rocks fall and spin(旋转)so close that the crew has to duck and dive to avoid being broken into pieces. It’s exciting, but it’s wrong: In our solar system, the odds are pretty good that you could stand on the surface of an asteroid and not even be able to see another.
Yet they do interact if given enough time. Even in the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, crashes are ineluctable. And when two space rocks go “crash” in the main
belt, big impacts blow lots of asteroid fragments(碎片)out into space.
In many cases, these fragments stay on much the same orbital path as the parent asteroid,
although they gradually separate from it because of slight speed differences. After thousands of
years, some fragments might be clear across the Sun, but their distance from the Sun and the shape and direction of their orbits remain similar. Such conserved features are collectively called an
asteroid’s orbital elements. The groupings sharing orbital elements are identified as “families”, which are named after the largest asteroid in the group.
Studying asteroids by focusing on their families can help us make a good guess about what properties a newly-found one has if it belongs to a better-studied family. Care must be taken,
though. Some very large asteroids have differentiated materials in the center and on the surface, so confirming those guesses usually requires taking spectra(光谱), the time-consuming process of
breaking an object’s incoming light into individual colors to reveal its composition.
It’s more than a mere academic exercise to find this particular branch of an asteroid family tree: Some asteroids are potentially risky, meaning they could crash with Earth some time in the
distant future. If we know how they find their way to the inner solar system from the main belt to pose threats in the first place, we can defend our planet from future worrisome asteroids.
12 .What is the author’s view on the scene in the sci-fi movie
A .It ignores the special visual effects.
B .It goes against the established facts.
C .It overestimates the super heroes’ role.
D .It fuels people’s interest in the asteroid.
13 .Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “ineluctable” in paragraph 2
A .Incredible. B .Uncommon. C .Unavoidable. D .Invisible.
14 .What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A .The formation of asteroid families.
B .The definition of orbital elements.
C .The moving pattern of asteroid fragments.
D .The naming rule of asteroid groups.
15 .What can be inferred about the study of asteroid family
A .It is a high-risk practice. B .It is built on assumptions.
C .Its range needs to be expanded. D .Its value can’t be overstated.

Every civilization faces a choice: to remember or to forget. In ancient
Rome, territorial 36 (expand) brought not only wealth but also cultural clashes. Many old buildings then 37 (tear) down to make room for new structures.
For centuries, scholars have debated 38 Rome could have remained harmonious or not with its diverse populations. The answer, many believe, lies 39 its legal system and public works. However, not all cultural encounters were peaceful. When two powerful
empires met, the more 40 (influence) one often forced its language and customs on the other. 41 (avoid) the loss of their identity, local people sometimes tried to hide their
local traditions. As a result, those local traditions, 42 (freeze) in time due to foreign pressure, survived only in remote villages or secret rituals.
In modern times, media 43 (cover) of historical events has changed how we
remember the past. 44 (convince) by only one side of the story is dangerous for

Harry Caine retired from a local power company. After his retirement, he just wanted to do something for his community. One day, he spotted many abandoned bikes, which were gathering dust in the neighbouring garages. “Why not fix them up and give them to those needy ” he
thought. So he posted to an online group in his Alaska Homer, offering to fix people’s bikes for free.
Soon some neighbors began to donate their abandoned bikes after their kids had outgrown them or adults had upgraded to new models. Then, in Harry’s tidy little garage, he set about
working. Its inner walls lined with tools, the garage held a workbench and repair stand. Classic rock music often drifted from its open doors, a sign that Harry was working hard. After Harry’s highly skilled repairs, the donated bikes took on new looks and functioned very well.
One Saturday, Harry transported the first batch of six repaired bikes to a nearby food bank, a place that gave food to the poor. He camped out with his Free Bikes sign and waited to see
whether the bikes were needed. Five minutes later, a little boy wearing worn-out clothes came up to Harry with a doubtful look, his eyes glued to a blue bike, “Is it really free ” the boy asked.
“Yes. If you like it, it’s yours.” Harry answered joyfully. The boy beamed a broad smile. He
briskly walked towards the blue bicycle. Then he touched its handle, pressed its bell, and
explained how he had dreamed of owning one bicycle. Grinning with delight, Harry watched him pedal away and disappear in the distance. The following 30 minutes saw the remaining bikes
ridden away, which gave him a sense of satisfaction.
As word of Harry’s project spread, neighbors admirably called him Uncle Harry, and they kept him busy with a steady supply of bikes, helmets and even locks. However, with more
abandoned bikes flooding in, Harry had his hands full and the repairing work was more than he could deal with.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;

根据第三段“During the slow days that followed, he accompanied me and spoke of his boyhood in Andalsnes, among Norway’s fjords (峡湾) and mountains of such beauty that he dared not return.(在接下来那段漫长而难熬的恢复期里,他一直陪着我,跟我讲他在昂达尔内斯的童年往事——那地方坐落在挪威的峡湾与群山之间,风景美得让他后来都不敢回去,生怕现实会破坏心中那完美的印象。)” 以及第四段“His stories, repeated in those long days of
recovery, fixed Norway in my imagination as a place where I could find the answer. Thus, when I was well enough to travel, I started my journey, moved less by courage than by a quiet hope for
Each step seemed like a question: “who are you now ” At the top, sitting among stones and thin grass, I looked at the silent peaks and understood that the sea had
not sent me here by chance. I had crossed water and land only to discover that the journey was
In their company, I did not find a cure, but I began, at last, to
find myself.(在它们的陪伴下,我没有找到治愈的方法,但我终于开始找到自己了。)”

根据文章第一段“We’ve all seen this happen in a science-fiction movie: The super heroes jump into a shaky spaceship and escape the bad guys by flying through the asteroid (小行星) belt, where huge rocks fall and spin(旋转)so close that the crew has to duck and dive to
avoid being broken into pieces. It’s exciting, but it’s wrong: In our solar system, the odds are
pretty good that you could stand on the surface of an asteroid and not even be able to see

In many cases, these fragments stay on much the same orbital path as the parent asteroid, although they gradually separate from it because of slight speed
differences. After thousands of years, some fragments might be clear across the Sun, but their
distance from the Sun and the shape and direction of their orbits remain similar. Such conserved
features are collectively called an asteroid’s orbital elements. The groupings sharing orbital
elements are identified as "families", which are named after the largest asteroid in the group.(在许多情况下,这些碎片与母小行星保持在大致相同的轨道上,尽管由于速度略有不同,它们会逐渐与母小行星分离。
It’s more than a mere academic exercise to find this
particular branch of an asteroid family tree: Some asteroids are potentially risky, meaning they
could crash with Earth some time in the distant future. If we know how they find their way to the inner solar system from the main belt to pose threats in the first place, we can defend our planet

Knowing Harry’s situation, a group of volunteers came to help him. They came from all
walks of life—students, retirees and even some stay-at-home parents, each eager to lend a hand.
They selflessly devoted their time, skills, and knowledge to tackling piles ofthe donated bikes.
Together, they sorted the bikes by size and condition before the repairs. Harry’s garage came alive with energy, filled with laughter and lively conversations as the volunteers worked side by side. With volunteers’ support, Harry was determined to expand the project to more people. And he thought it was necessary to offer each of them a right bike.
To match each bike with its new owner, Harry gathered their specific needs. Along with the volunteers, Harry carefully took into account individual preferences, such as bike styles, colors,
and sizes, as well as ages, addresses and occupations. With the valuable information, every bike
was perfectly tailored to meet the recipients ’ needs. Once the bikes were fully repaired, they
delivered each bike in person to the recipient’s home, ensuring it was an ideal fit. The recipients
were overjoyed, expressing their heartfelt gratitude for the thoughtful gesture. This personalized approach not only warmed their hearts but also strengthened community bonds, fostering a deeper sense of belonging and connecting.
