“Your mother needs a new heart,” my father told me when I called on that December
afternoon. An unrelenting optimist, he spoke as if she merely needed to have a part replaced. But, although my two sisters and I knew that our mother had heart problems, this news still made us
frozen for a while with our eyes widening in disbelief.
Dr. Marc Semigran of the transplant team reviewed my mother’s medical history. She’d had an irregular and rapid heartbeat for most of her life. Her present treatment — the use of a
series of cardioversions, or electric jolts, to restore a normal heartbeat — would not work in the long-term. She had an enlarged and weakened heart, as well as a faulty valve.
“With medication,” Dr. Semigran said, “you have a 60 percent chance of living six months.
You could have a longer life with a transplant, but there are risks. You’re at the top end of the age group of sixty years old. The lungs and other organs must be healthy and strong. While the
transplant surgery is actually a straightforward procedure, acceptance by the body is the difficult thing.”
My family came together, trying to provide strength and work out what to do. We’d already gone from shock, over our mother’s condition, to worry that she wouldn’t be a suitable recipient. Despite of the risk, we chose to believe that she would make it eventually.
Word came later in December that she had been accepted into the programme. Dr. Jeremy Ruskin told us one of the reasons she had been accepted was that she had such strong family
support.
One Monday in May, at about 8 p. m., my mother received a phone call from the hospital that a heart was available. As she was about to be wheeled off, my father took her face in his
hands and looked into her eyes. His look said everything about their 42-year relationship.
The heart transplant operation was successful and the conditions could not have been better.
The irony of the transplant process is that one family’s loss is another’s gain; that tragedy begets fortune. It is a kind of life after death, our hearts beating beyond us. We developed a
feeling of love for this new part, of gratitude for the doctors, for the process, and for those people who made a decision just for humanity.
24 .How did the sisters feel to the news that their mother needed a new heart
A .Frightened. B .Astonished. C .Worried. D .Annoyed.

26 .What made the transplant team decide to have the operation
A .That her lungs were healthy.
B .That a new heart had been found.
C .That her family were expecting the operation.
D .That her family trusted the doctors' medical level.
27 .What can we learn from the passage
A .Family support is of great importance.
B .Fortune favors those who are optimistic.
C .Confidence helps patients overcome difficulties.
D .Getting prepared before accepting a treatment matters.

Creativity is commonly thought of as a personality trait that resides within the individual.
We count on creative people to produce the songs, movies, and books we love, to invent the new gadgets that can change our lives, and to discover the new scientific theories and philosophies that can change the way we view the world. Over the past several years, however, social psychologists have discovered that creativity is not only a characteristic of the individual, but may also change depending on the situation and context. The question, of course, is what those situations are: what makes us more creative at times and less creative at others
One answer is psychological distance. According to the Construal Level Theory (CLT) of psychological distance, anything that we do not experience as occurring now, here, and to
ourselves falls into the “psychologically distant” category. It's also possible to induce a state of
“psychological distance” simply by changing the way we think about a particular problem, such as attempting to take another person’s perspective, or by thinking of the question as ifit were unreal and unlikely. In this new paper, by Lile Jia and colleagues at Indiana University, scientists have
demonstrated that increasing psychological distance so that a problem feels farther away can actually increase creativity.
Why does psychological distance increase creativity According to CLT, psychological
distance affects the way we mentally represent things, so that distant things are represented in a
relatively abstract way while psychologically near things seem more concrete. Consider, for
instance, a corn plant. A concrete representation would refer to the shape, color, taste, and smell of the plant, and connect the item to its most common use—a food product. An abstract
representation, on the other hand, might refer to the corn plant as a source of energy or as a
fast-growing plant. These more abstract thoughts might lead us to contemplate other, less common uses for corn, such as a source for ethanol, or to use the plant to create mazes for children. What
this example demonstrates is how abstract thinking makes it easier for people to form surprising
connections between seemingly unrelated concepts, such as fast-growing plants (corn) and fuel for cars (ethanol) .
In this most recent study, Jia examined the effect of spatial distance on creativity.
Participants performed a creative generation task, in which they were asked to list as many
different modes of transportation as possible. This task was introduced as having been developed either by Indiana University students studying in Greece (distant condition) or by Indiana
University students studying in Indiana (near condition) . As predicated, participants in the distant condition generated more numerous and original modes of transportation than participants in the near condition.
28 .What can we learn about psychological distance
A .It brings more abstract concepts into our mind.
B .It builds uncommon connections in our mind.
C .It enables us to know more uses of common things.
D .It makes problems easier to be solved.
29 .Which of the following is true of spatial distance according to Jia’s study
A .Distant condition is related to people’s creative ability.
B .It makes students in Indiana list more modes of transportation.
C .It enables people to generate more abstract ideas.
D .It helps one to take another person’s perspective.
30 .Which would be the best title of the passage
A .Formation of Abstract Thoughts B .Formation of Connections among Concepts
C .Ways to Create Psychological Distance D .An Easy Approach to Promote Creativity

We humanists have been defending humanities (人文学科) for many decades now, but the crisis of the humanities only grows. In the face of declining student interest and mounting political scrutiny(审查), universities and colleges are increasingly cutting funding for humanities
departments.
As a humanist, someone who reads, teaches and researches mainly philosophy and
literature, I am prepared to admit that I do not know what the value of the humanities is. I don’t
know whether the study of humanities promotes democracy (民主) or improves your moral
character or enriches your leisure time or improves your critical thinking skills or increases your empathy. I once asked the best teacher I ever had why she no longer taught her favorite novel, and she said that she stopped teaching a book when she found she was no longer curious about it. The humanistic spirit is, fundamentally, an inquisitive(好奇的) one.
In contrast, defenses ofthe humanities are not and cannot be conducted in an inquisitive
spirit, because a defensive spirit is inimical to an inquisitive one. Defensiveness is, it must be
admitted, an understandable response when the chopping block(砧板) is brought out and you need to explain why you shouldn’t be on it. It may be that humanists need to spend time joining
political battles, which requires their participants to pretend to know things that they do not actually know.
Nonetheless, an atmosphere of urgency and calls for immediate action are unfavorable to fields of study like literature and philosophy that require a reflective mood, and pretending to
know what one doesn’t actually know is unfavorable to forms of inquiry that demand an open mind.
A defensive mindset also encourages politicization. If the study of literature or philosophy helps to fight racism or to promote democracy and everyone agrees that racism is bad, and
democracy is good — then you have your answer as to why we shouldn’t cut funding for the study of literature or philosophy. Politicization is a way of arming the humanities for its political battles, but it comes at an intellectual cost. Why is racism so bad Why is democracy so good
Politicization silences these and other questions, whereas the function of the humanities is to raise them.
Humanists are not alone in their ignorance about the purpose of their disciplines. But
scientists are under a lot less pressure to explain why they exist because the society at large
believes itself to already have the answer to that question. I may not know why it’s important to
read Homer and Plato, but I do have a deep love for reading, teaching and pondering the texts. The love is what I want to share with others, as well as the surprise and delight of finding resonance
The task of humanists is to invite, to welcome, to excite, to engage. And when we let
ourselves be ourselves, when we allow the humanistic spirit to flow out not only into our
classrooms but also in our public-self presentation, we find we don’t need to defend or prove anything: We are irresistible.
31 .What troubles the humanists most regarding the crisis in humanities
A .Students’ lack of interest in studying humanities courses.
B .People’s little knowledge regarding the purpose of humanities.
C .The mounting political scrutiny faced by humanities departments.
D .The pressure on humanists to argue for the value of their disciplines.
32 .What does the word “inimical” underlined in Paragraph 3 most probably mean
A .Sensitive. B .Contrary. C .Immune. D .Relevant.
33 .What can be inferred about a defensive mindset
A .It weakens human’s intellectual capacity.
B .It is the worst action to take in the face of the crisis.
C .It requires a reflective mood on the study of humanities.
D .It brings about a lower chance of survival for humanities.
34 .Which of the following might the author most probably agree
A .Humanities may not need any defense.
B .Science is more useful than humanities.
C .The future of humanities remains cloudy.
D .The battle of humanities is a hard one to fight.

The Positive Effects of a Positive Affect
Parents often have high hopes for how their children will turn out in adulthood, such as wanting them to be healthy, to feel satisfied with their career, and to have strong
friendships. 35
Recent research suggests that a teen’s affect—especially positive affect—is one critical factor. What exactly is affect Affect is the tendency to express positive or negative emotions,
which in turn influences how we experience things and determine whether to judge a given
situation as positive or negative. 36 Moreover, research suggests that a person’s affect is relatively stable over time, especially by the time one reaches adulthood.
Affect is typically described in terms of being either positive or negative, and it seems that positive affect, in particular, is related to a number of beneficial outcomes in adulthood.
In support of this crucial role that positive affect has in development, a study by researchers at the University of Virginia followed teenagers and young adults from ages 14 to 25, allowing
them to understand the predictive power of positive affect across the critical developmental period from adolescence to young adulthood.____37____ For example, teens with a higher positive
affect reported had a stronger, healthier attachment to their friends.
38 Positive affect also predicted increased self-worth and job competence,
suggesting that, overall, positive affect seems to be a key predictor of young adult success across several important areas of functioning.
But what about the effects of negative affect The researchers also examined whether
negative affect would predict problems in young adulthood. 39 Thus, the important
takeaway is that adolescent positive affect may have powerful links to important life outcomes in the domains of personal well-being, career, and social relationships up to a decade later.
A .Affective responses to events typically happen automatically.
B .So how can parents help their children grasp the meaning of positive affect
C .But what factors help produce these outcomes as teens move from adolescence to adulthood
D .Interestingly, the results suggested that positive affect may go beyond helping teens build positive relationships.
E .The results uncovered that negative affect might account for many life problems when a teenager became a young adult.
F .Unlike positive affect, having greater negative affect did not have any significant associations with any of the later life outcomes.
G .This study found that positive affect was strongly predictive of life outcomes in young adulthood, such as developing better friendships.
My path was long to recognizing my vocation (职业) , much longer than it had to be. My parents were professors of engineering. Science was the horizon of possibility in my family;
nothing else counted or even existed. No matter how much I loved to read and write, it never occurred to me to major in anything else.
I had been curious about biology and psychology in high school, so when I knew Columbia offered a joint major in the two fields, I chose it on the spot. The feeling, other than excitement,
was one of relief. I couldn’t bear the uncertainty that college represented. Instead of opening
options up, I needed to shut them down. I had locked up three-quarters of my courses for the next four years, and I hadn’t even gone to a single class.
There was no one there to stop me. I would mope (消沉) in the back of those lectures,
reading a novel behind my notebook, unaware of the fact that I was trying to tell myself
something. I don’t know exactly when things went wrong with my chosen course of study. By the time I realized that I should have been an English major, it was too late to make the switch. I
ended up working in a tiny nonprofit that meant nothing to me, with no idea where I should go next.
And then I happened to be visiting a friend in architecture school. She wasn’t happy, either; her program was way too pretentious and theoretical. We were walking along and she said, “I
have to get out of graduate school. ” And I immediately thought “I have to go to graduate
school. ” Meaning, I’ll never be happy until I give myself the chance to study English literature after all. Meaning, it’s not too late - I’m not going to let it be too late. Everything was suddenly clear and calm.
It wasn’t easy getting in at that point. But for the first time in a long while, I performed at the top of my ability. I’d study for eighty hours a week and I had never been happier.
40 .What family factor (s) influenced the author’s choice of major
41 .What did the author realize at college
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.

psychologically near things seem more concrete.”(根据 CLT ,心理距离影响我们在心理上表 征事物的方式,所以距离远的事物以相对抽象的方式表征,而心理上近的事物似乎更具体。) 故选 A。
As predicated, participants in the distant condition
generated more numerous and original modes of transportation than participants in the near
故选 A。
以及第四段“In this most recent study, Jia examined the effect of
spatial distance on creativity.”(在最近的研究中,贾研究了空间距离对创造力的影响。)
Approach to Promote Creativity”(一种简单的提升创造力的方法)。

35 .上文“Parents often have high hopes for how their children will turn out in adulthood, such as wanting them to be healthy, to feel satisfied with their career, and to have strong friendships.(父母常常对他们的孩子成年后的表现寄予厚望,比如希望他们的身体健康,对自己的事业感到满意,有牢固的友谊)”说明父母希望孩子们能在成年后获得好的结果,C 项“但是在青少年从青春期走向成年的过程中,哪些因素有助于产生这些结果呢?”
36.上文“Affect is the tendency to express positive or negative emotions, which in turn influences how we experience things and determine whether to judge a given situation as positive or
故选 A项。
37 .上文“In support of this crucial role that positive affect has in development, a study by
researchers at the University of Virginia followed teenagers and young adults from ages 14 to 25, allowing them to understand the predictive power of positive affect across the critical
developmental period from adolescence to young adulthood.(为了支持积极影响在发展中的这
friendships”和下文事例中的“had a stronger, healthier attachment to their friends”都是指和朋友建立良好的关系。故选 G 项。
38 .上文“For example, teens with a higher positive affect reported had a stronger, healthier
attachment to their friends.(举例来说,报告认为积极影响更高的青少年对他们的朋友有更强 和更健康的依恋关系)”说明积极的情感给青少年带来良好的人际关系, 而 D 项“有趣的是,结果表明积极的影响可能不仅仅是帮助青少年建立积极的人际关系” 中的“helping teens build positive relationships”指的上文提到的和朋友之间良好的关系,是对上文话题的承接,讲了积极的影响的好处,下文“Positive affect also predicted increased self-worth and job competence, suggesting that, overall, positive affect seems to be a key predictor of young adult success across
several important areas of functioning.(积极情感还可以预测自我价值感和工作能力的提高,这表明,总体而言,积极情感似乎是青年人在几个重要功能领域取得成功的关键预测因素。)”
39 .上文“But what about the effects of negative affect The researchers also examined whether
negative affect would predict problems in young adulthood.”(但是负面影响的影响呢?
“Thus, the important takeaway is that adolescent positive affect may have powerful links to
important life outcomes in the domains of personal well-being, career, and social relationships up
to a decade later..(因此,重要的一点是,青少年的积极影响可能与十年后个人幸福、职业和 社会关系领域的重要生活结果有着密切的联系。)
40.The professions ofthe author’s parents. 41.The author realized that he should have been an English major. 42 .The author was determined to get into graduate school because his
friend persuaded him to do so.
The author was determined to get into graduate school because he wanted to give himself the
chance to study English literature. 43 .From the author's experience, I learned that choosing a
major should be based on one's true interests and passions rather than external expectations or family influence. Following one's heart leads to true happiness and fulfillment.

根据文章第一段“My parents were professors of engineering. Science was th horizon of possibility in my family; nothing else counted or even existed. (我的父母是工程学教
授。科学是我家庭可能性的地平线;其他一切都无关紧要甚至不存在。)”可知,作者父母的职业影响了作者选择专业,故答案为 The professions ofthe author’s parents.
根据文章第三段“By the time I realized that I should have been an English major, it was too late to make the switch. (当我意识到我应该是英语专业的时候,已经太晚了,无法换专业了。)”可知,作者在大学时意识到他应该是英语专业,故答案为 The author realized that he should have been an English major.
And I immediately thought “I have to go to graduate school.” Meaning, I’ll never be happy until I give myself the chance to study English literature after all.
Meaning, it’s not too late - I’m not going to let it be too late. 可知,作者决定去读研究生是因为他想给自己机会学习英国文学,而不是因为朋友劝说,所以表达“because his friend persuaded him to do so (因为他的朋友劝说他这样做)”是错误的,应更正为“because he wanted to give himself the chance to study English literature”故答案为 The author was determined to get into graduate school because his friend persuaded him to do so.
The author was determined to get into graduate school because he wanted to give himself the chance to study English literature.
根据文章第一段“My path was long to recognizing my vocation (职业) ,
much longer than it had to be. My parents were professors of engineering. Science was the horizon of possibility in my family; nothing else counted or even existed. No matter how much I loved to read and write, it never occurred to me to major in anything else. 和第三段“There was no one there to stop me.
ended up working in a tiny nonprofit that meant nothing to me, with no idea where I should go
next. From the author's experience, I learned
that choosing a major should be based on one's true interests and passions rather than external expectations or family influence. Following one's heart leads to true happiness and fulfillment.
44 .Dear Jim,
How is everything going I'm writing to share with you a wonderful English book I've read recently.
It's called The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The story is about a little prince who travels from planet to planet, meeting different lonely adults, before finally landing on Earth. Through his journey, he learns about friendship, love, and what truly matters in life.
This book has deeply inspired me. It reminds me that grown-ups often forget the simple but important things—like imagination, curiosity, and seeing with the heart. As the fox says, "What is essential is invisible to the eye." This has made me reflect on my own life and try to appreciate the little things around me.
I'm looking forward to hearing about your favorite book.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Jim,
How is everything going I'm writing to share with you a touching English story I've read recently.
It's The Last Leaf by O. Henry. The story is set in a small artists' community. A young
painter named Johnsy falls seriously ill and believes she will die when the last leaf falls from the
vine outside her window. An old artist named Behrman, despite being ill himself, paints a leaf on the wall during a stormy night. The leaf never falls, which gives Johnsy hope to recover. However, Behrman dies from pneumonia caught that night.
This story has deeply moved me. It shows the power of hope and the meaning of selfless sacrifice. Behrman gave his life to save Johnsy's, proving that true art is not just about
painting—it's about love and humanity.
I'm looking forward to hearing about your favorite book or story.
Yours,
Li Hua
