A Look at the Festivals This Summer
The Firegathering 18-20 May
The Firegathering festival returns to an unidentified place somewhere in the Sussex
countryside this May. The ticket price is a very agreeable 40, an amount that the organizers
promise covers only the costs of staging (筹办) the event. As well as the night-club singers and
dancers and circus performers, you can expect live performances from local stars. If this looks like it might be right for you, you’d be well advised to book your ticket soon; the event has sold out
every year since its beginning four years ago.
Sheep Music 20-22 July
Sheep Music started life as a garden party and has developed into a full-scale (全面的)
community event. Even though the advertising has always been limited to word of mouth, the
huge number of people two years ago left organizers worried that the large crowds could ruin the festival’s family feel. Luckily July sees the return of this brilliant party. The climax (高潮) comes in the shape of Saturday night’s full-scale parade that you just would not expect to happen in the otherwise sleepy Welsh borders.
The Big Chill 3-5 August
Ten years on and The Big Chill could very well be close to becoming a big pop festival like Glastonbury. That said, the many thousands in attendance are still able to relax in the beautiful
Eastnor deer park and listen to plenty of music that would otherwise pass them by. Families have always been given a warm welcome and it’s fair to say that The Big Chill is probably the most
child-friendly of all the medium-sized festivals. If you’ve never been, you should certainly go. Summer Sundae
10-12 August
Although only a year old this summer, Summer Sundae has quickly inspired the
imaginations of Leicesteks music lovers. Last year’s event was a success, noted by more than a
few mentions at the UK Festival Awards. It is set in the impressive grounds of De Montfort Hall. Although the performers are still to be confirmed, the cabins (小屋) are sure to be there. These
small buildings are made from wood and carpets, storage space, and can fit a family for the night.

When an epidemic hit our region, many of us turned to TV to pass the time. Neeti Goel and her children Anishka, age 15 and Arav, age 17, turned to volunteering to help those in need of a
warm meal and a bit of sunshine in their lives. Neeti and her children began preparing casseroles (炖菜) and soups for Homeland Hospice patients and their families.
“We started with the desire to volunteer,” Neeti says. “It wasn’t long before we perfected
our work and began preparing meals twice a month.” A month into their volunteering work,
Anishka and Arav took on most of the cooking and expanded their menu to include soups. “It felt good to know we were helping others,” Anishka says. “Volunteering for a brief amount of time
can make a big difference.”
After months of meal preparation for Homeland, Neeti and her children began helping two additional hospice (临终安养院) organizations in the region. As their work expanded, so did their grocery (食品杂货) bill. Anishka and Arav decided to start their own nonprofit (非营利的)
organization to raise funds to pay for the food needed to prepare meals. The teens founded Rays of Sunshine to bring a bit oflight to families in their time of need.
From working with a lawyer to creating a website, Anishka and Arav did everything. The experiences provided valuable life skills as well as resources to keep their love of helping others going.
Rays of Sunshine held its first fundraising event a few days ago. “We have raised more than $1,500,” Arav says. “The funds will help us continue making meals for families.” The event not
only raised funds, but brought awareness of the power of volunteerism at any age and the work of Homeland Hospice.
Neeti, Anishka and Arav, never dreamed their decision to volunteer would create a
transformational experience for the family. They simply set out to make someone’s day a bit
brighter. “We were so pleased to learn how much the families enjoyed our cooking,” Neeti says. “It has been wonderful for us to work together as a family.”

Plants generally do not like to be touched. Just like humans, plants have a protective barrier that is essential for helping them maintain healthy growth and guard against disease.
Every day small changes to the leaves, such as being touched, can change this layer and
weaken it, leaving the plant vulnerable (易受 伤害的) to infection. That change can also limit the amount of food and water a plant can take in, as the cell walls can become blocked. If you feel the need to move a plant, use the stem (茎), the base of the plant, or a tool, instead of your hands.
Of course, when planting plants, you may need to touch them, but make sure to be gentle while doing so. If you harvest fruit or vegetables, always be sure to use scissors to cut the stems.
It is not possible for plants to feel when humans touch them in the same way that humans experience touch. Unlike humans, plants lack the neural (神经系统的) structures and associated cells that are necessary to respond to touch in the same way humans do.
The mimosa (含羞草) plant responds to touch by rapidly folding its leaves within just a few seconds! The opening and closing of the leaves in a mimosa plant depends on the changes in
turgor (膨胀) pressure in plant cells. Turgor pressure helps maintain the cell’s shape. In an
undisturbed mimosa plant, the cells are all turgid (肿胀的) as they contain water. When the leaves are touched, signals are sent, causing them to lose water. Due to the loss of water, the turgor
pressure is lowered and the leaves of the plant close.
Additionally, plants can sense shaking through their stems and petioles (叶柄), which are
small projections that help a plant grow and bend. Thus, while plants may not feel a “touch” in the same way that humans do, plants can sense shaking or touch as a way to respond to their
environment.
46 .What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to

A .To encourage readers to take care of the plant. B .To stress the importance of plants’ feelings.
C .To explain how the plant reacts to the touch. D .To introduce the role of plants’ leaves.
49 .What is the text mainly about
A .Plants can feel a “touch” in the same way as humans do.
B .The cells of plants are all turgid while being disturbed.
C .Different parts of a plant have different functions.
D .Plants usually do not like being touched.
50 .What is the text
A .A gardening guide. B .A research article. C .A news report. D .A book review.

Ralph Emerson once said that the purpose of life is not to be happy, but to be useful, to be loving, to make some difference in he world. While we appreciate such words of wisdom, we
rarely try to follow them in our lives.
Most people prefer to live a good life themselves, ignoring their responsibilities for the
world. This narrow perception of a good life may provide short-term benefits, but is sure to lead to long-term harm and suffering. A good life based on comfort and luxury may eventually lead to
more pain be-cause we spoil our health and even our character, principles, ideals, and relationships.
What then, is the secret of a good life A good life is a process, not a state of being : a
direction, not a destination. We have to earn a good life by first serving others without any
expectation in return because their happiness is the very source of our own happiness. More
importantly, we must know ourselves inside out. Only when we examine ourselves deeply can we discover our abilities and recognize our limitations, and then work accordingly to create a better world.
The first requirement for a good life is having a loving heart. When we do certain right
things merely as a duty, we find our job so tiresome that we’ll soon burn out. However, when we do that same job out of love, we not only enjoy what we do, but also do it with an effortless
feeling.
However, love alone is insufficient to lead a good life. Love sometimes blinds us to the
reality. Consequently, our good intentions may not lead to good results. To achieve desired
outcome, those who want to do good to others also need to equip themselves with accurate world knowledge. False knowledge is more dangerous than ignorance. If love is the engine of a car
knowledge is the steering wheel(方向盘). If the engine lacks power, the car can’t move; if the driver loses control of the steering, a road accident probably occurs. Only with love in heart and the right knowledge in mind can we lead a good life.
With love and knowledge, we go all out to create a better world by doing good to others. When we see the impact of our good work on the world we give meaning to our life and earn
lasting joy and happiness.
51 .What effect does the narrow perception of a good life have on us
A .Making us simple-minded B .Making us short-sighted.
C .Leading us onto a busy road. D .Keeping us from comfort and luxury.
52 .According to the author, how can one gain true happiness
A .Through maintaining good health.
B .By going through pain and suffering.
C .By recognizing one’s abilities and limitations.
D .Through offering help much needed by others.
53 .According to Paragraph 4, doing certain right things with a loving heart makes one .
A .less selfish B .less annoying
C .more motivated D .more responsible
54 .In what case may good intentions fail to lead to desired results
A .When we have wrong knowledge of the world.
B .When our love for the world is insufficient.
C .When we are insensitive to dangers in life.
D .When we stay blind to the reality.
55 .According to Paragraph 5, life can be made truly good when .
A .inspired by love and guided by knowledge
B .directed by love and pushed by knowledge
C .purified by love and enriched by knowledge
D .promoted by love and defined by knowledge

Ashley Power’s mother bought a computer for her when she was eight. When she was
thirteen, she was surfing the Internet regularly, but she couldn’t find anywhere for teenagers to
meet and talk. And one day she thought, “If I had my own website, I’d make it a really interesting site for teenagers.”
So, when Ashley was sixteen, she launched her own website, called Goose Head. Young
people got excited when they searched on this website and step by step they introduced the site to others and made more friends. She had no idea how big a success it would be, but three years
later, the site was the most successful teen site in the USA . It was getting 100,000 hits every day, and Ashley had about 30 employees.
After a few years, the website closed down. Then Ashley, who lives in Los Angeles, was
asked to write a book called Goose Head Guide to Life. It’s safe to say that this is a book for teens that they’ll enjoy. The book is about how to design a website and start a business. It begins with a section called “All about Ashley”, where Ashley tells readers what it is like to be the boss of a
company when you are only sixteen. “I was so happy. But it was crazy in a lot of ways. I was
stressed. I mean, I was only sixteen — I didn’t even have a car! If you were sixteen and you had your own company, you’d be stressed, too!”
In an interview Ashley gave advice to teenagers who wanted to start their own business, “Just be strong and have your dreams and work hard at them. And don’t listen when people tell you that you can’t do it, because I heard ‘no’ a lot. Just keep going until you hear ‘yes’!”

61 .Ladies and gentlemen,
Good afternoon! I am Li Hua from Xingguang Middle School. The topic of my speech is
“Action for Green Earth”. As we all know, the earth we live on is facing the most serious
environmental problems we have never seen before. For example, due to the excessive
exploitation and destruction of human beings, the amount of vegetation is constantly reduced, and the biodiversity is threatened. The expansion of arable land has led to the drastic reduction of
wildlife habitat, and many animals are endangered.
First of all, I think we should set up nature reserves for wild animals to ensure the living
environment for wild animals. Secondly, we should advocate green travel, which can reduce
carbon emission, so as to build a beautiful and green planet. Finally, I appeal that we should start
from the small things around, reduce and avoid waste, to create a good ecological environment.
That’s all. Thank you!
