It’s January and time to go back to school. For some, that might be a gloomy prospect after the joys of the post Christmas festive period. For me, though, it’s as exciting as a trip to Antarctica, also as scary as starting a job for which I’m not sure whether I’m qualified.
To be embarking on a master’s degree in Psychotherapy and Counselling at Regent’s University at 71 is perhaps an unlikely route for someone who dropped out of school at 17. But now I’ve come full circle to the conclusion that nothing, for me, feels more stimulating at this point in my life than learning new things. That studying, far from being the bore and the chore it used to be, is a treat.
Turning 70 came as something of a shock. I started to feel I was drifting (飘). Without a big project, and without any major family responsibilities, I was starting to feel I was lying on a bed of thorns. Friends of similar age were lapping up their lives, socializing and travelling. However, I longed for something more. Or perhaps not more, but different.
As the gloom grew, I thought perhaps I needed to see a therapist. A friend, a psychotherapist, suggested that while therapy might be useful, doing a course on the basics of psychotherapy and counselling might be more up my street. Without too much thinking, I decided to give it a shot.
So that’s how every weekday I beep (发出哔哔声) myself through the gate with my student pass, which makes me smile every time. I felt privileged to be exposed to a group of my fellow students who were willing to be open to me.
While ageing is an inevitable process, we can get rid of a lot of the rules about what’s age-appropriate. Studying for a master’s degree in old age is a challenge, but it has provided me with a new perspective on life. Hence, ageing should never limit your ambitions.

A. Returning To School — My Dream Since Childhood
B. My Efforts To Learn At An unlikely Age Paying Off
C. Learning — My Way To Overcome The Ageing Crisis
D. My Tough Journey To Pursuing A Master’s Degree

What has the size of a soccer ball but can jump from the Statue of Liberty’s feet to her eye level A new record-setting robot. An engineer at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Elliot Hawkes, has been working on this robot for seven years with his colleagues. “It started out as a stick with weights and rubber bands (橡皮筋)”, he remembers. After years of work, the robot has reached heights of 30 meters, higher than any other jumping robot or living animal.
These researchers studied how animals jump. They looked into leaping (跳跃的) frogs, spiders, kangaroos, dogs and more. But Hawkes’ group didn’t want to copy any of these animals. Instead, the team learned what features set the limits for animal jumpers.
“It’s very exciting,” says Cynthia Sung, a roboticist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She was impressed with how high the robot jumped. And getting as high as possible was the main goal here. However, for the robot to be useful, it will need some improvements. “They don’t have any steering (转向装置) at all,” notes Sung. That means this robot can’t control its jump height or direction. Sung’s team has made its own jumping robot, named REBOund. That robot can’t jump very high. But it can be programmed to jump to any of several different heights.
Hawkes’ team is working to add steering to their robot. These researchers hope to send their robot to the moon, so they also want to find a way for it to make collections there. A jumper can go to places a robot with wheels can’t. Hawkes’ team is already working with NASA. They hope to turn their robot into a space explorer.
8. Why did the researchers look into how animals jump
A. To draw inspiration for the robot’s appearance. B. To find reasons for their jumping limits.
C. To make the robot jump like them. D. To develop new rubber bands
9. What does Cynthia Sung want to show through her words
A. Her REBOund is much better. B. Her REBOund is a big breakthrough.
C. Hawkes’ new robot can jump much higher. D. Hawkes’ new robot needs to be more practical.
10. What is Hawkes’ team’s attitude to their robot
A. They seem reserved about it. B. They are doubtful about it.
C. They have high hopes for it. D. They are very concerned about it.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. A new way to explore the moon. B. A new method of building robots.
C. A new approach to jumping higher. D. A new record-setting leaping robot.
D
Italian diver and gardener Sergio Gamberini decided to see if he could grow vegetables in a plastic balloon underwater. The experiment was a success — so he decided to dive deeper into the world of underwater agriculture.
Today, Gamberini is the founder of a company using “biospheres” off the coast of Italy to grow a variety of plants, introducing the world to a new type of agriculture. The company’s six “biospheres” are air-filled plastic balloons about two meters wide. Each is fixed to the seabed by chains so that it sits between 15 and 36 feet below sea level. The biospheres are equipped with cameras and sensors that allow researchers in the company to monitor CO2 levels, humidity, temperature, and more from a control tower on the shoreline. There’s also a device to communicate with divers in the biospheres.
Solar panels (太阳能电池板) on the roof of the control tower power the fans that create airflow inside the biospheres, and because the temperature inside and outside the biospheres is consistent, there’s no need to expend energy on the heating or cooling systems needed for traditional greenhouses.
The underwater garden doesn’t require pesticides since bugs can’t reach the plants, and though more research is needed, the company notes on its website that the higher-pressure conditions underwater appear to help plants grow more quickly.
Even with all the optimization potential offered by technology, Gamberini admits it’s hard to imagine the produce grown in his startup’s biospheres ever competing financially with traditionally grown crops. Still, he hopes the system’s sustainability will be enough to draw customers.
12. What does Gamberini’s company use “biospheres” mainly for
A. Doing scientific research on marine life.
B. Creating a habitat for underwater animals.
C. Monitoring climate change effects on coastal regions.
D. Growing different types of plants through underwater agriculture.
13. How is the temperature maintained inside the biospheres
A. By temperature regulation by divers.
B. By advanced heating and cooling systems.
C. By natural climate conditions of the underwater environment.
D. By solar panels on the roof of the control tower on the shoreline.
14. What can we infer about Gamberini’s company
A. It contributes to climate change.
B. It leads to excessive use of pesticides.
C. It negatively affects ocean biodiversity.
D. It has little negative influence on the environment.
15. What is the topic of the text
A. Growing plants under the sea.
B. The creative world of keeping animals.
C. Exploring the depths of underwater farming.
D. The challenge of growing greens underwater.

As a new fourth grader, Gina was in Mrs Melton’s class. After a month in class, she had a new classmate, John. The boy and his three younger brothers, together with their poor parents, had just moved to the town where Gina lived. When the school presented the boys with the school supply list for all fourth graders, they were upset. They had no money, so they hardly had the supplies required. They only had a few sheets of poor-quality paper and a pencil each.
As a result, except Gina, all kids in class made fun of John, who felt so embarrassed and lonely. Gina was sad to see it and felt sorry for John, so she decided to do something. She asked her mother Linda for new pencils, crayons, paper, etc. Without hesitation, Linda agreed. The next morning, Gina got up much earlier than usual. Although Linda found it strange, she didn’t ask too much.
When Gina hurried to school, she quickly put her new supplies into John’s desk before other classmates came in. Later, John was amazed and confused to find the supplies. He looked around, but Gina focused on her book, pretending to know nothing. John was disappointed; he failed to find the angel. After class began, other kids in class were also surprised by John’s new supplies and couldn’t laugh at him anymore.
After that day, Gina began to come home on a regular basis asking for school supplies. She didn’t tell that she would give them to John, fearing Linda wouldn’t agree with it. And as usual, Linda just dutifully provided whatever she needed, never questioning her.
After ongoing requests for items that should have easily lasted a long time, Linda became concerned and asked her, “Gina, what are you doing with your school supplies ” The girl would always respond with an answer that satisfied her. One day, after supplying the same thing only a week earlier, Linda became annoyed with her.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
She asked her once more, “Gina! What’s going on with your school supplies ”

She asked her once more, “Gina! What’s going on with your school supplies ” Knowing her excuses would no longer work, Gina began to cry. Linda suddenly panicked and thought, “Had Gina been bullied by another child Was she giving her supplies to the child to keep from being hurt ” Finally, in tears, Gina told her she had given her supplies to John and explained the reason. Linda was surprised, but she hugged Gina and said, “I’m glad you’re willing to help others, but you should have been honest.”
Wanting to know more about John, the next day Linda visited Mrs Melton. Linda told Mrs Melton what Gina had said and done. Mrs Melton was touched and congratulated her on having such a thoughtful daughter. Meanwhile, she was proud that she had such a nice student. After the visit, Linda decided to keep offering supplies to John and his brothers. Finally, John thanked Gina very much after knowing the truth, and they also became good friends. Inspired by Gina, the other kids in class eventually treated John friendly, too.
