Many writers praise the World Wide Web’s wonders, and countless articles
highlight how the Internet simplifies our lives. We can shop without waiting in lines or
carrying cash, get the latest information from large databases, and download software,
documents, and images whenever we need them. But the Internet offers far more
than convenience— it transforms lives through online communities and social
networks. Jan, an English teacher in New York, US, suddenly fell seriously ill at 40
and quit her job. Stuck at home with only her computer, she soon found surfing the
Internet eased her loneliness and boredom. She enjoyed music, films, games, and
virtual exploration, and joined an online group to share troubles and get support. Jan
realized the Internet’s greatest strength: it eliminate(s 清除)distance between people.
Inspired by online connections, Jan started an IT club to teach older adults
computer and Internet skills. She and friends organize events, raise funds for teachers,
and help many in need. A 59-year-old man learned to apply for jobs online and found
great work, letting his daughter focus on university. A 61-year-old lonely woman even
co-founded a successful small online company with two friends.
Jan now takes online classes to use the Internet for social good. She stresses
bridging the digital divide—everyone should access and use new technology. Her next
plan is a charity website to raise money for poor children. “When you face hard times,
you meet others with similar struggles,” Jan says. “They inspired me to help.” For
Jan, the Internet didn’t just improve her life— it sparked her desire to give back,
showing its power to connect and inspire kindness.

As we walk along the narrow path to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the thin air
makes us pause to rest often. But soon, we see something amazing: a group of
Tibetan antelopes with white fur, eating quietly on the grassland. This is not a mere
sightseeing trip—our mission is to study these endangered creatures and witness the
untiring(不懈的) efforts to safeguard them.
Native to the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, Tibetan antelopes are a symbol of the
region’s fragile ecosystem. Yet their existence hangs by a thread. In the 1990s, illegal
poaching for their soft wool, which could be sold at high prices. What’s worse, new
roads and buildings destroyed their living habitats, and climate change brought more
droughts. In just 20 years, their number dropped by over 70%, and they almost died
out.
Our guide, Zhaxi, a lifelong resident of Changtang, embodies the spirit of
conservation.. He has worked as a protector at the Changtang National Nature
Reserve for more than 30 years. Every day, he walks across the big grasslands,
facing cold weather and difficult land to stop hunters. “These antelopes are not just
animals—they are part of the plateau’s soul,” he says firmly. “If we lose them, the
5
plateau will be in trouble, and we will suffer too.”
Thanks to strict national laws, help from other countries, and the hard work of
people like Zhaxi, things have gotten better. Illegal hunting has been greatly reduced,
and now there are over 70,000 Tibetan antelopes. But Zhaxi warns us: “ Climate
change and human activities are still threats. Protecting wildlife is not an option—it’s
our duty to future generations.”
8. Why did the writer go to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
A. To enjoy the beautiful scenery B. To study Tibetan antelopes and their
protection

29. What is the major threat that caused the sharp decline(下降)of Tibetan antelopes
in the 1990s
A. Climate change leading to droughts B. Habitat fragmentation from infrastructure
C. Illegal poaching for their valuable wool D. Competition for food with other wildlife
30. What can we infer from Zhaxi’s words
A. Tibetan antelopes are not important to the plateau.
B. Protecting antelopes is necessary for the plateau’s balance.
C. Humans can live well without Tibetan antelopes.
D. The plateau’s environment is already perfect.
31. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A. Tibetan antelopes can be found in many parts of China.
B. Illegal hunting is no longer a threat to Tibetan antelopes.
C. Zhaxi has spent over 30 years protecting Tibetan antelopes.
D. The number of Tibetan antelopes has dropped by 70% now.

Scientists working in Indonesia have observed an orangutan (猩猩) intentionally
treating a wound on his face with a medical plant, the first time this behaviour has
been documented.
According to a paper published in Scientific Reports, Rakus, a male orangutan,
treated a facial wound by chewing (咀嚼) leaves from a plant and then covered the
6
wound with the chewed leaves, which are used in traditional medicine to treat certain
illnesses. The study’s lead author Isabelle Laumer said the team were “very excited”
by the observation. Although other wild primates (灵 长 类 动 物 ) are known to use
plants that have medical effects, scientists have never seen them used to treat recent
wounds.
The team believe Rakus intentionally(有意的) used the plant as he applied it
over and over again in a process that took several minutes. Rakus was most likely hurt
in a fight with another male orangutan, which is not common in this area due to plenty
of food and good relationships between orangutans. This means orangutans seldom
suffer wounds, giving researchers few opportunities to observe this behaviour.
As for how Rakus learnt to treat his wound, one explanation is “accidental
individual invention”. The orangutan may have touched his wound accidentally while
feeding on the plant and felt immediate pain relief due to its pain-relieving effects,
making him repeat the behaviour. Another explanation is that Rakus learned from
other orangutans in the area where he was born.
The observation provides new understanding about the existence of
self-treatment in our closest relatives and how wound treatment began in evolution,
added Laumer, raising the possibility that wound treatment may come from a common
ancestor (祖先)shared by humans and orangutans. Thus researchers plan to closely
observe other orangutans in the area to see if the behaviour is repeated. “The findings
indicate(显示,表明) how much humans and orangutans have in common. We are
more similar than different,” she said. “We hope this study raises awareness of how to
protect these endangered animals in the wild.”
32.Why is Rakus thought to have used the plant on purpose
A.He managed to tell the plant from others.
B.He taught his partners to do the same thing.
C.He had used plants with medical effects before.
D.He repeated the behaviour in a certain period.
7
33.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The individual invention Rakus designed. B.The possible ways Rakus learnt self-treatment.
C.The delicious plants Rakus fed on accidentally.
D.The immediate pain relief Rakus got from the plant.
34.What do the researchers plan to do
A.Analyze the findings. B.Prove the significance.
C.Identify more evidence. D.Consider more possibilities.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Plant Is Found to Treat Animal WoundB.Orangutans Include Plant in their Diet
C.Scientists Discover New Medical Plant D.Orangutan Uses Plant to Deal with Injury

第二节 读后续写 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was addicted to watching TV, especially those boring and time-wasting shows.
As a senior one student, I knew clearly that I should not spend too much time on TV. I
had a lot of homework to do every day, but I just couldn’t control myself. Every time I
turned on the TV, I would watch it for a long time. An hour passed quickly, and I
always forgot to do my homework and housework.
One weekend morning, I found my mom was different from before. She used to
watch TV with me, but this time, she spent her time reading books and taking care of
the garden. I felt very curious and asked her why she didn’t watch TV. She smiled and
said gently, “Honey, there is more meaningful things in life than TV. We should make
good use of our time.”
Her words touched me deeply. I decided to change myself. I turned off the TV at
once and started to finish my tasks: making my bed, cleaning my room and doing my
homework. After finishing all my work, I called my best friend Mary and made a study
plan with her. That afternoon, we studied hard together at home. I felt a strong sense of
achievement.
In the evening, my mom and I had dinner happily without watching TV. We
talked about our day happily. Before going to bed, I picked up my pen to write in my
journal, thinking about my meaningful day. I really changed a lot, and I knew I would
never waste time on useless TV shows again.注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;

Dear fellow students,
I’m Li Hua from Class 3, Grade 11. Datian Eld’s deer, a precious species unique
to Dongfang, once teetered on extinction with only 26 individuals left due to
overhunting. Thanks to conservation efforts, their number has risen to over
1,000, but illegal hunting, habitat loss and pollution still loom as threats.
To safeguard them, we should advocate for stricter laws against hunting and
habitat destruction. Meanwhile, we can launch campus campaigns—like poster
displays or sharing sessions—to raise awareness of protecting their habitats from
pollution.
Every effort matters. Let’s stand as guardians of these unique creatures. Act now to pass on this precious ecological treasure!

第二节 读后续写
When I thought about the friends and hobbies I had forgotten, I felt both sad
and excited. I hadn’t met many friends for a long time, and I had given up many
hobbies—just because I watched too much TV. It was time for me to change.
First, I would take my journal and use my time better. Where was the book I
wanted to read When did I last talk to my closest old classmate I had a lot to
do. Maybe I could start painting again, a hobby I loved before. There were many
things I could try, and I felt a little hope in my heart.
As I opened my journal, I noticed a piece of paper inside, left by my mom.
Curiously, I unfolded it and found a handwritten note from my mom. It read,
“Jane, I’ve seen how hard you’ve been working to change your habits. I’m
so proud of you. Let’s go on a mother-daughter trip this weekend to celebrate
our new lifestyle.” My heart leapt with joy and surprise. This unexpected twist
was the perfect motivation to keep going. I quickly ran to find my mom, eager to
plan our adventure. Little did I know that she had already booked a surprising
destination.
