As we know, there are many differences between Western culture and Chinese culture. We can see these differences in the way people use language, particularly when it comes to words about animals and plants.
In Chinese culture, most expressions (表达) about dogs often carry negative (负面的) meanings, like “a homeless dog”, “a mad dog”, “a running dog”, and “a dog catching a mouse” all have negative meanings. However, in Western countries, people think dogs are honest and good friends of people, and often use the expressions about dogs to describe (描述) positive meanings. For example, “you are a lucky dog” means that you are a lucky person, while “every dog has its day” shows the idea that everyone has their moment of good luck. Despite (尽管) these differences, both cultures use the expression “dog-tired” to mean “very tired”.
Cats hold a special place in Chinese culture. They stand for good luck and richness, so people love cats very much. However, Western culture often uses the word “cat” to describe a woman who is rude or unkind. It shows the cultural differences in the use of language.
When it comes to plants, the rose is a symbol (符号) of love, peace, courage, and friendship in both China and some Western countries. It is also the national flower of England, America, and many other countries, showing that people all over the world like it very much.
In all, the words we use to describe animals and plants can be aoss cultures, with some expressions carrying positive meanings while others are negative. By studying how people use these words, we can get a better understanding of the cultural differences between different countries. This helps us become better at speaking different languages, and lets us learn more about different cultures.

B.Different countries have different cultures
C.The rose means the same in Chinese and English
D.What do ‘dog’ and ‘cat’ mean in English and Chinese
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.B
【导语】本文通过对比中西方文化中关于狗、猫和玫瑰的语言表达差异,说明语言能反映文化差异,学习这些表达有助于更好地理解不同文化。

A Party in Paris: What I Learned the Hard Way
Part 1: Read and Explore
When I first moved to Paris for work, I thought I had done my homework. I learned a few French phrases and read about famous landmarks. But nothing prepared me for the party that taught me what it really means to respect another culture.
My French colleague Claire invited me to her birthday dinner. "Come to my apartment at 8," she said. In my country, arriving exactly on time is polite. So I showed up at 7:55. Claire opened the door looking surprised. She was still in her kitchen, food everywhere, hair not done. "You're so early!" she said. I felt terrible. Later I learned that in France, it's normal to arrive 15 minutes late to a party. The host needs that extra time to get ready.
Then there was the gift. In my culture, bringing a gift to a birthday is expected. But I brought wine. Claire smiled politely and put it away. I noticed everyone else brought flowers. My French friend later explained: "Wine is nice, but flowers show you thought about the host personally. It's more meaningful."
The biggest mistake came during dinner. I wanted to be friendly, so I asked Claire about her family. "Are your parents still working Do you have brothers " The table went quiet. Claire changed the subject quickly. Afterwards, she told me gently: "In France, we don't ask personal questions unless we know someone very well. Family, money, age—these are private matters."
I felt so embarrassed. But instead of getting angry, Claire helped me understand. "You're learning," she said. "That's what matters."
By the end of the evening, I was using my few French words—"merci," "c'est délicieux." People smiled. It wasn't perfect French, but it showed I was trying.
Now I understand: respecting another culture isn't about knowing every rule. It's about being willing to learn, to make mistakes, and to keep trying. As Claire said, "We don't expect you to be French. We just want you to care enough to try."

In Mexico, family is very important. So on weekends, Mexican families usually have big gatherings. They eat delicious food, talk with each other, and play games together. It makes them feel close and happy.
In China, many old people enjoy gardening. My Chinese neighbor, Mr. Li, has been gardening for two years. He grows flowers and vegetables in his yard. He says gardening lets him get close to nature and relax after a busy day.
