My name is Alice. Early last year, I was troubled by an anxiety that crippled (削弱) my ability to do anything. I felt like a storm cloud hung over me. For almost a year I struggled on, constantly staring at this wall that faced me. The main reason for this was that I wanted to be perfect at whatever I did, which obviously in life is not possible, but it consumed me.
One day, I attended a presentation by wildlife conservationist Grant Brown at my high school. His presentation not only awed and inspired me, but also helped emerge an inner desire to make a difference in the world. I joined a pre-presentation dinner with him and that smaller setting allowed me to slowly build up my courage to speak one-on-one with him — an idea that had seemed completely impossible. This first contact was where my story began.
A month later, Brown invited me to attend the World Youth Wildlife Conference. Looking back, I now see that this would be the first in a series of timely opportunities that my old self would have let pass, but that this new and more confident Alice enthusiastically seized. Shortly after I received his invitation, applications to join the Youth for Nature and the Youth for Planet groups were sent around through my high school. I decided to commit to completing the applications, and soon I was a part of a growing global team of young people working to protect nature. Each of these new steps continued to grow my confidence.
I am writing this just six months since my journey began and I’ve realized that my biggest obstacle (障碍) this whole time was myself. It was that voice in the back of my head telling me that one phrase that has stopped so many people from reaching their potential: I can’t. Some of his history plays, such as Antony and Cleopatra, Richard III and Henry V,are based on the lives of real historical people. In Antony and Cleopatra, Cleopatra becomes Antony’s girlfriend and Antony becomes so crazy about her that he loses control of the army. Cleopatra kills herself in the end and Antony kills himself too.
Shakespeare’s plays can be very difficult sometimes. Some of the themes they deal with are heavy, so they almost always include a lighter subplot with characters that are not so important. They are often used in tragedies to lighten the mood of the play and to keep the audience interested in the main plot.

Sleeping in on weekends to make up for lost sleep during the week may offer mental health benefits for teenagers and young adults, according to new research from the University of Oregon. The study found that people aged 16 to 24 who caught up on sleep over the weekend were significantly less likely to report symptoms of depression. Compared with those who did not recover sleep on weekends, this group showed a 41 percent lower risk of depressive symptoms.
The researchers analyzed data from 16- to 24-year-olds who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2021-2023. Participants reported their typical bedtimes and wake-up times on weekdays and weekends. Using this information, the researchers calculated weekend catch up sleep by comparing the average amount of sleep per weekend day with the average amount per weekday. Participants also reported their emotional well-being and were classified as having symptoms of depression if they said they felt sad or depressed every day.
Biological sleep rhythms, known as circadian (生理节奏的) rhythms, naturally change during adolescence. These shifts make it harder for teens to fall asleep early, even when they are tired. “Instead of being a morning lark (云雀) , you’re going to become more of a night owl, ” explained Melynda Casement, a licensed psychologist. “And sleep beginning keeps progressively delaying in adolescence until age 18 to 20. After that, you start becoming more morning larkish again.”
For many teenagers, the natural sleep window falls around 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. This schedule often conflicts with early school start times. Because of this mismatch, many sleep experts and health care providers support efforts to delay school start times as a public health measure.
“It’s normal for teens to be night owls, so let them catch up on sleep on weekends if they can’t get enough sleep during the week because that’s likely to be somewhat protective,” Casement said.
