What did ancient Chinese people eat in summer Here are four delicacies they treated themselves to.
Su shan
Su shan is a dish that looks like crushed ice with milk and butter. According to records, sugar was added to Su shan, which was shaped into many forms. It is neither solid, nor watery and disappears once it touches teeth. However, not everyone had large iceboxes to create the delicacy in summer.
Ice and iced beverages (饮料)
Although there were no fridges in ancient times, iceboxes to store ice cubes in summer had become very common by the Tang Dynasty. At that time, people either had ice water or crunched shaved ice. People could easily buy iced beverages on the street during the Song Dynasty. As a community service, some people even provided free ice water and medicine on the street.
Cold lotus root starch soup
Popular from the Song Dynasty onward, cold lotus root starch soup was made from lotus root powder mixed with boiling water to form a smooth, jelly-like paste. After cooling down naturally or being chilled, it became tender and refreshing. Unlike iced drinks or fruit, it was a mild, nourishing treat suitable for people of all ages.
Cherries with cheese and syrup
Many cherry trees were planted in the Yellow River area in the Tang Dynasty. The fruit was common in early summer and people often added cheese and syrup to the cherries. It could cool you down. When people had cherries with cheese and syrup, they often used plates and bowls made of colored glaze to make the fruit look more mouthwatering.

It was a warm spring day when Alaqua Cox got the text.
She was floating on a raft in a lake near her home in Wisconsin. A friend had sent her a social media post. It said Marvel was looking for a deaf Indigenous woman in her 20s. That woman would play a superhero named Maya Lopez in a new TV series, Hawkeye.
Alaqua was all those things Marvel was looking for: She’s deaf. She’s Indigenous. She’s a woman in her 20s. But she wasn’t an actress. Plus, the character wasn’t an amputee like Alaqua, who has had her right leg removed. So at first, Alaqua laughed it off. But then two more friends sent her the same post. After that, something changed. “Let’s go for it,” she remembers thinking. “Why not ”
Alaqua never dreamed of being famous. She grew up on a Menominee Indian Reservation with her three siblings. But she was the only deaf student in her middle school. People had to translate things into American Sign Language (ASL) for her. They weren’t always the best at it, though. “I was very shy and isolated as a kid,” she says. And Alaqua definitely didn’t see many people who looked like her on TV. Most of the Indigenous characters she saw were played by non-Indigenous actors. There weren’t many deaf or disabled actors either.
Alaqua didn’t think she would be the one to change that. But after three months of tryouts, she got a call. The part was hers! Not only would Maya Lopez be the first deaf Indigenous superhero — she would be an amputee too. That felt important to Alaqua. “It shows other people with disabilities that they can do anything,” she says.
Alaqua’s experience in school helped her know what she needed to succeed on Hawkeye. She asked for deaf acting coaches and trainers. She also suggested that the cast and crew take ASL classes. When she arrived on set, people were able to greet her in ASL. “That meant so much to me,” she says.
Alaqua will never forget being that shy middle schooler. When asked what she would tell her younger self, she doesn’t think twice. “You are perfect the way you are,” she says.
4. What made Alaqua Cox decide to try for the role at first
A. Her rich acting experience.
B. The encouragement from her friends.
C. Her dream of becoming a superhero.
D. The invitation from the film team directly.
5. Which of the following best describes Alaqua Cox as a kid
A. Sociable and optimistic. B. Lonely and unconfident.
C. Ambitious and independent. D. Talkative and energetic.
6. What did Alaqua Cox do to make sure she succeeded on the set
A. She taught ASL to the cast and crew.
B. She refused to work with non-disabled actors.
C. She changed the whole story of the TV series Hawkeye.
D. She asked for professional help and better communication.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. The development of American Sign Language
B. The Way to become an independent amputee
C. The birth of a Marvel superhero with a disability
D. The popularity of the Marvel TV series Hawkeye
C
Cows itch, just like us. They rub their bodies against trees and fences. But Veronika the cow takes things into her own hands, or rather, into her mouth. Veronika can curl her tongue around the handle of a brush and bring it to her mouth. Holding it between her teeth, Veronika swings her head to the side to brush her back. Veronika wasn’t trained to do this, which means cows are smarter than we think.
Veronika the cow lives in Austria. Her owner is a farmer and baker named Witgar Wiegele. He keeps Veronika as a pet. Wiegele began to notice that she sometimes picked up sticks. He thought this was amazing.
Alice Auersperg is a scientist. She and another scientist, Antonio J. Osuna-Mascaró, visited Veronika. They wanted to study how she uses the brush as a tool. They put a large brush in front of Veronika in a random position. The cow picked up the brush to scratch herself 76 times. She moved it with her tongue, and then she picked it up with her teeth. Sometimes she would let the brush go. Then she would pick it back up again to get the right position.
The scientists say that this is a potential sign of complex mental processes — the ability to reason, think critically, make decisions, and be creative. Another sign of Veronika’s intelligence is that she used different parts of the same tool for different purposes.
People used to think that only humans could make and use tools. But then came a chimpanzee named David Greybeard. In the 1960s, scientist Jane Goodall watched David use a tool. He used grass as a tool to get insects to eat. Since then scientists have seen many animals use tools, including orcas, elephants, and octopuses.
But what counts as using a tool Does the animal actually have to make the tool, like crows They use sticks to get insects to eat. Or does an animal need to hold the tool Wrasse fish don’t have hands. They smash crabs against rocks to remove the shells.
Yet Osuna-Mascaró doesn’t think Veronika is special. He believes other cows can learn to use tools too. All they need is a long and happy life, like Veronika has enjoyed.
8. Why do scientists say cows like Veronika are smarter than people think
A. Veronika is the only cow who can learn to use a tool.
B. Wiegele has more than one cow trained like Veronika.
C. Brushes and sticks are not the only tools Veronika uses.
D. Veronika was never trained to use a tool to brush her back.
9. Why did the author include the information about Veronika being a pet
A. To explain why it was easier to study Veronika than wild animals.
B. To show how Veronika came to live on the farm of Witgar Wiegele.
C. To elaborate on opinions about Veronika’s brain shared by other cows.
D. To suggest that Veronika’s living conditions made her capable of learning.
10. What is the function of paragraph 4
A. To describe Antonio J. Osuna-Mascaró’s work in science.
B. To illustrate that Veronika can use more than one tool at once.
C. To emphasize the possible significance of Veronika’s behavior.
D. To introduce the idea that many animals are known to use tools.
11. How did Jane Goodall become involved with studying how animals use tools
A. By observing a chimpanzee who used grass to get insects.
B. By figuring out how chimpanzees use sticks to get insects.
C. By watching a chimpanzee who sometimes picked up sticks.
D. By learning from other scientists who work with wrasse fish.
D
Trainers and coaches across the National Football League (NFL) are now employing the league’s innovative system: Digital Athlete, developed by Infinite Athlete, a data and performance analytics firm. This AI-powered platform is designed to help teams maximize player performance and minimize injury risks.
Built by data engineers, AI specialists and biomechanists — experts who study body movements in living organisms, the platform contains comprehensive data on over 2,000 players. Each athlete is represented by a digital avatar constructed from their performance in training and competitive matches. The technology can detect subtle changes that indicate a heightened risk of injury or excessive physical pressure. Teams rely on these insights to prevent injuries and maintain a strong and healthy lineup.
The Minnesota Vikings closely monitor their players daily throughout the season. Players with higher injury risk are highlighted in red, prompting trainers and sports scientists to consult the data alongside their on-field observations. “When do we know an athlete is overworked or underprepared ” said Tyler Williams, the Vikings’ vice president of player health and performance. “We can know that by measuring the data, right ”
Much of this monitoring is enabled by Hawk-Eye, a high-speed camera system originally designed for tennis and cricket. Now installed in most major stadiums, it supplies accurate data to the AI platform. The system analyzes variations in players’ acceleration, deceleration and movement patterns, and can issue injury-risk warnings up to 48 hours before practices or games.
Since Digital Athlete’s launch in 2023, lower-body injuries in practices have decreased by roughly 14 percent. The technology also assisted in designing the NFL’s new kickoff rules, which reduce high-speed collisions while increasing kickoff return rates.
According to Chris Brown, the chief technology officer for Infinite Athlete, the next step is to make a team facility where all data comes together in real time. Hawk-Eye cameras would work with other tools, including sensors that measure an athlete’s force and weight and track their health data. Together, data can create a complete digital picture of the athlete’s activity.
12. What does the underlined word “avatar” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. A virtual image of a real player. B. A new tool used to analyze data.
C. A record of previous game results. D. A digital system for collecting data.
13. What do Williams’ words suggest in paragraph 3
A. Data enables assessment of players’ physical state.
B. Teams lack effective ways to ensure players’ safety.
C. Football injuries are hardly avoidable in competitions.
D. Field observations outweigh the data-based judgments.
14. How does Hawk-Eye contribute to the Digital Athlete platform
A. It monitors players’ health conditions in real time on the field.
B. It captures accurate sports data and sends it to the AI platform.
C. It is designed to help the league make new football match rules.
D. It directly analyzes players’ movement data and issues warnings.
15. What can be inferred about the future of the system
A. Athletes may give up some privacy for safety.
B. AI systems have stepped into daily life widely.
C. Sensors will replace cameras in the near future.
D. More types of data will be integrated in the future.

How to Get Back into Reading
Many of us read all day. We read texts, homework, and articles all day long. But fewer people are reading for fun. The world is increasingly distracting, and it can be really difficult to get into a reading habit. ____16____ We asked experts to suggest some ways to get out of it.
____17____
Experts recommend going to a library and checking out various kinds of books. “Read the first chapter, and see which one or two grab you,” they say. If you’re not enjoying a volume, put it down and move on to the next. Experts advocate not finishing a book. If you don’t like a book, no one’s judging you. You’re not failing.
Keep it short and sweet.
You can start with shorter books. Don’t have One Hundred Years of Solitude be the first book you pick up if you haven’t read anything in a few years. Search Goodreads, Barnes and Noble or the Booker Library’s list of short books. ____18____ You’ll get a full narrative experience out of 10 or 15 pages.
Make it social.
Experts recommend sharing books with friends, or joining a book club. You can attend an audiobook walking club where everyone walks together, listening to their own audiobooks. Throughout your walk, you can stop and chat about your books and what’s exciting you.
The medium doesn’t matter.
____19____ Whether you read physical books, use an e-reader or listen to audiobooks, it’s all valuable. “If that’s what gets you reading, that’s what gets you reading,” they say.
Once you’ve found your favorite genres and reading method, carve out a little bit of time for it each day. ____20____ Reading is something that should bring you joy. There’s a lot you can gain from it.
A. Figure out what you enjoy.
B. Make sure you have a good taste.
C. By the end, you’ll have created a habit.
D. Don’t get hung up on the format of what you’re reading.
E. They can be a good way to dip your toe back into reading.
F. Are you also suffering from reading burnout like many others
G. If reading is so great, why do so many people fall out of the habit

Ethan was a shy 11th-grade boy who seldom joined after-school activities. His greatest hobby was making kites with his grandfather, who had taught him everything about the craft before moving to another city. Every weekend, Ethan would stay in his small workshop, cutting bamboo sticks and painting colorful patterns on paper.
This year, our school held a Kite Festival, and the winner would get a chance to fly their kite at the city’s central park. Ethan hesitated for days before signing up. He wanted to show his work, but he was afraid of being laughed at for his quiet personality. He decided to make a special kite shaped like a phoenix, with bright red and gold feathers, just as his grandfather had taught him.
For two weeks, Ethan buried himself in making the kite. He carefully shaped the bamboo frame, glued the paper smoothly, and painted each feather by hand. However, on the night before the festival, a sudden strong wind blew through his open window. When Ethan rushed to close it, he found his nearly finished phoenix kite lying on the floor, its wing torn and the frame broken.
He sat on the floor, feeling extremely sad. All his hard work seemed to be wasted. He wanted to give up and not attend the festival at all. The next morning, Ethan walked to school slowly, carrying the broken kite in his schoolbag. He had no time to make a new one, and his eyes were filled with disappointment. As he entered the school gate, he saw his classmates busy preparing their kites, laughing and chatting happily.

My Trip to the Smart Village
I took part in the “Walking into Smart Villages” activity last week, and what I saw and felt along the way was truly inspiring.
First, we visited intelligent greenhouses where sensors automatically control temperature and irrigation, greatly improving crop yields. Then we learned to promote local organic vegetables via live-streaming e-commerce. In the afternoon, we took an eco-tour to enjoy the beautiful countryside scenery, learning about local efforts to protect the environment.
This activity made me realize how technology and eco-tourism together empower rural revitalization. I’m proud of China’s progress in developing modern, sustainable agriculture and look forward to more such practices.

【答案】例文
Just as Ethan was about to hide in a corner, his art teacher Ms. Brown walked towards him. She noticed his low spirits and the broken kite in his bag. Instead of blaming him, she smiled gently and asked what had happened. Ethan told her about the wind and his broken phoenix kite, his voice full of sadness. Ms. Brown patted his shoulder and said, “A broken kite doesn’t mean your dream is broken. Let’s fix it together.” She took out tape, colored paper and scissors from her office, helping Ethan stick the torn wing and strengthen the bent frame patiently.
With Ms. Brown’s help, Ethan fixed the kite and joined the festival bravely. Although the phoenix kite was not as perfect as before, it still looked beautiful in the sun. When Ethan flew it, the kite rose slowly and danced in the sky. His classmates cheered for him, and he even won the Most Creative Kite award. Holding the prize, Ethan realized that kindness and courage could fix everything. He sent a photo of the flying kite to his grandfather, who replied with warm praise. From that day on, Ethan became more confident and learned to face difficulties bravely.
