Beethoven wrote many famous pieces of music, but he was probably well-known for his nine symphonies (交响曲).When Beethoven died in 1827,he had some ideas for a 10th symphony. All he left behind were some notes (音符) about the piece and a few sketches (概述).A special team of musicians, computer scientists and historians was formed.Their aim was to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony to celebrate his 250th birthday.
To train an AI to help with the symphony, the team turned every piece of music Beethoven ever wrote into a form the computer could understand.By feeding the program with all Beethoven’s music, the AI could look for patterns in the way Beethoven wrote. This included, for example, how he used simple melodies (曲调) again and again all through a piece to create a theme,or how he moved between different parts of the symphony. It took more than two years, but finally the team completed Beethoven’s 10th Symphony.
The team took a few minutes of the music by the AI,and played it for Beethoven experts, musicians, and reporters. No one could tell which parts had been written by Beethoven and which parts were made up by the AI.Although Beethoven didn’t write it all,the team feels sure that the music is much like what he might have written,if he’d had the chance.

The Yingge dance, also named “Dance of the Heroes”,has a history dating back to the Ming Dynasty. It is a folk art form that mixes opera, dance and martial arts (武术).In 2006,Puning Yingge dance was listed as part of China’s national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产).
The Yingge dance usually gets inspiration from The Water Margin, one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels.During major festivals, the sound of Yingge drums fills cities and villages. When watching the dance, people can always feel the spirit of fighting for the good besides a lively air with energy and youth.
Typically,in the Yingge dance, the lead dancer acts like a snake as the snake means being flexible (灵活的) and wise, which gives the dance deep cultural importance.Holding a cloth snake, the lead dancer copies the snake’s movements. When he makes his way through the dance team,he also guides the team’s direction. His fine steps and skillful movements make him the focus of the performance.
During performances, dancers hold the Yingge sticks at their mid-points,waving them and forming the shape of number 8.At the same time, their fingers create continuous movements. Moreover, each dancer jumps sideways and hits the sticks to the drum beats as if they are riding a horse.Their heads and bodies move naturally to the beat too.
