“Hey, lady! You can move your ugly car up now!” The silver-haired driver behind me in a fancy truck rudely yelled at me. Without much thought, I yelled back at the man, “What Are you in a rush or something ”
I was waiting in line at the drive-through to order our breakfast on a Sunday morning. There were only 12 inches or so between me and the car in front of me. There were also three additional cars in front of that one. We were getting nowhere fast. What was he hoping to gain by yelling at me
I wanted to let my own anger go after this ridiculous exchange. But the more I thought about it, the angrier I got. I was angry that he yelled at a mother in front of two kids. My daughter and my son were both confused and saddened by what they had just witnessed. We were on our way to a soccer tournament, and we had a bonus day free from school and work. Probably, there was nothing in the world to be upset about. Then this man let his anger out.
I told my kids I was so mad that I had to roll my window up so that I wouldn’t keep yelling at this guy. Then, I stopped and looked back. I had moved up the 12 or so inches at his “suggestion”, while he hadn’t moved an inch. Suddenly, I felt sympathy for him. He must have been suffering in some way. As my kids and I slowly made our way to the pick-up window to pay for our order, I had an idea.
“I heard how rude that man was to you, and I wanted to apologize to you for having to put up with that. He isn’t worth paying for,” the cashier said to me. “My kids support me in doing that,” I answered the cashier, adding that hate cannot drive out hate.
24 .Why was the driver angry with the author
A .Her car cut in. B .Her car stopped abruptly.
C .She held up his truck. D .She screamed at him.
25 .What does the author mainly tell us in paragraph 3
A .Why her anger kept growing. B .What her kids’ reaction was.

A .She taught her kids a lesson. B .She apologized to the driver.
C .She gave the cashier some recommendations. D .She paid for the driver’s food.
27 .What does the author intend to convey in the text
A .Deal with a man as he deals with you. B .Respond to hate with kindness.
C .Put distance between your car and another. D.Never go to the drive-through at rush hours.

Though brown pelicans (鹈鹕) have bounced back from the endangered species list, they have been suffering from the second life-threatening event in recent years. Large numbers of the species are showing up sick and injured along California’s coastline, and experts are racing to find out why.
A volunteer feeds sick brown pelicans recovering at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center of Orange County. The center is currently caring for over 100 brown pelicans which have been discovered starving or being sick in recent weeks. During the starvation event in 2022, nearly 800 brown pelicans were admitted to wildlife nursing centers and received considerate care, with only 394 eventually returned to the wild, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The cause of the current crisis remains largely unknown, but some interesting guesses are flying about. At one point, the birds were checked for the flu that has newly infected so many animals this year. Luckily, none of the sick pelicans tested positive for it. “We don’t have any indication that it’s directly human-caused, either, ” says Henkel, a senior environmental scientist. “It’s not a human action of any kind that we’re aware of. ”
One theory is that powerful winds may be to blame, as low visibility could be preventing the pelicans from diving well enough to catch their meals, and hungry birds often get trapped in fishing lines. The evidence pointing to starvation as the cause may also better explain why the pelicans come in with injuries.
Those involved in brown pelican recovery efforts note that while you should keep your distance from them, humans can be of assistance by immediately reporting an animal sighting to a local rescue center and keeping an eye on it until help arrives. Such an urgent response can often mean the difference between life and death for a pelican that needs life-saving care. If you are an expert, proper treatment for the affected pelicans may involve offering them lots of nutrition and water, or caring for wounds and giving them relevant medication in the center.
28 .What can we learn about brown pelicans
A .They have recently been classified as endangered.
B .A steep decline in their numbers is attributed to physical harm.
C .They have experienced long-term hunger.
D .Their population has shown modest signs of recovery.
29 .Why does the author list data in paragraph 2
A .To prove the pelicans face severe problems.
B .To highlight the mindful care for the pelicans.
C .To reveal the pelicans mainly die of hunger.
D .To stress volunteers’ role in saving the pelicans.
30 .Which of the following is a theory that may cause the pelicans' trouble
A .They are being poisoned by polluted water.
B .They are unable to hunt effectively due to bad weather conditions.
C .They are losing their habitats because of coastal development.
D .They are being attacked by other larger birds.
31 .How should an ordinary person deal with a sick brown pelican
A .Feed food and water to it. B .Rush it to a rescue center.
C .Seek timely professional help. D .Give it an immediate exam.
D
You are more likely to think of the information that is repeated to be true than the information you hear only once. You assume that if people are going to put in effort to repeat a statement, this reflects the truth of the statement.
Simply repeating some pieces of information does not actually make it true, but this tendency — also called the illusory (错觉的) truth effect — is a prejudice that can lead you to draw the wrong conclusions. An important step in decreasing the negative influence of prejudices in thinking is to be aware of them. To what degree are people aware of the illusory truth effect This question was addressed in the journal Cognition by Simone Mattavelli.
In the critical study, participants did two sessions. In one session, they read about a study in which people were exposed to trivia (琐事) statements and then were asked whether both statements they had heard before as well as new statements were true. They were asked to predict the percentage of each statement that would be judged as true. At another session a few days later, participants actually performed this study, reading a set of 20 trivia statements and then judging the truth of 40 statements, half of which were the ones they saw earlier and the other half of which were new.
This study replicated the illusory truth effect. People were more likely to judge statements they had seen before as true than statements that were new. Two interesting findings emerged from the predictions. First, participants tended to underestimate the size of the illusory truth effect for everyone. Second, participants were more wrong when predicting their own performance compared to predicting the performance of another person.
This work is particularly important in light of the amount of misinformation presented in social media. Many people are influencing public opinions about political and economic matters. Social media websites with misinformation will lead people to believe this information is true just because it is stated.
32 .What is Simone’s study mainly about concerning the illusory truth effect
A .People’s awareness of it. B .People’s reaction to it.
C .Its causes. D .Its process.
33 .How did the participants engage in the first session of the study
A .Reading, repeating and judging. B .Reading, assessing and forecasting.
C .Recording, judging and predicting. D .Predicting, observing and reflecting.
34 .What does the underlined word “replicate ” in paragraph 4 mean
A .object to. B .correspond with. C .bring up. D .dispose of.
35 .What is the author’s attitude toward Simone’s study
A .Unclear. B .Dismissive. C .Doubtful. D .Approving.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Knowing another language opens doors for kids and adults alike. But most educators agree that childhood
is the ideal time for language learning. If you want your children to be bilingual (双语的), here is where to start.
You should be flexible and use the method working best for your family. Some families favor “one parent,
one language ”. Some take on the task of learning a second language alongside their children. 36
Depending on your home situation, this can require a lot of planning, effort and persistence (坚持) on your part.
You’d better use all of the resources at hand. While having back-and-forth conversations with native speakers is the most effective, there are lots of other ways. 37 Watching a favorite show or reading an interesting book in the non-dominant (非主导的) language can make learning enjoyable. You may also find classes and schools that teach in the language you want your children to learn.
38 Travel is one way to engage your kid in everyday situations that are meaningful and real. Exposure to the language in its real context can significantly boost a child’s interest in and understanding of the language. But time abroad is not a requirement for real interactions. 39 For example, your son can use Spanish when playing with his Spanish-speaking cousins.
While you can always change the language learning plan if the path you’re on isn’t working, you shouldn’t get too discouraged when things aren’t happening as quickly as you might expect. 40 Language learning is a progressive and long-lasting process, and breakthroughs may come in unexpected ways and at different times for each individual.
A .Know there’s a lot happening under the surface.
B .Provide authentic opportunities for speaking practice.
C .Individuals have different levels of fluency in each language.
D .Introduce TV programs, songs and books in both languages to children.
E .And others use a mix of strategies to expose their kids to both languages.
F .Books can be used in a way that is developmentally appropriate for children.
G .As a matter of fact, they can take place with relatives speaking the language.

My parents never supported the idea of my having a pet, worrying about the mess it might cause or that I’d soon grow bored of looking after it. Instead, we agreed on a compromise: I would volunteer at a nearby animal shelter on weekends to prove my responsibility and commitment. That’s what led me to the Avondale pet shelter—and more importantly, to meet my future best friend, Chocolate.
One sweltering afternoon in August, my supervisor Charlie informed me that a young black Labrador would be arriving and that I’d be assigned as its main caretaker. An hour later, Chocolate walked in—a striking dog with glossy brown fur and bright blue eyes. Though he was around three months old, an age I assumed would be full of energy and playfulness, he instantly withdrew and settled at the far end of his enclosure.
Curious about his behavior, I asked Charlie what was wrong. He explained that Chocolate had been born with a genetic condition that left him with a very short tail, making people suspect he was unhealthy. Because of that, the breeder believed they had no option but to surrender him to the shelter.
Chocolate had been ignored and undervalued. It upset me to think that a dog who was otherwise perfectly healthy could be discarded so carelessly. At the same time, my heart went out to this puppy who’d been denied the affection and care he rightly deserved. Right then, I made up my mind to give Chocolate all the love and attention I could during my time as a volunteer.
Although hesitant and reserved at first, Chocolate gradually began to trust me through patience, treats, and play. Little by little, he started to open up. Before long, every time I approached his pen to take him out for walks or games, he’d be thrilled, bouncing around happily.

原文:Hello, if you are looking for something fun to do, consider a quick weekend trip to somewhere in your local area. Here in the American Midwest near Chicago, there are a number of scenic places and picturesque towns. And are only a one-to-three-hour drive away. Recently, our social group visited three small towns. Shiwana. Nani. And Elkhart in northern Indiana. What we enjoyed most was seeing small town with its quiet, slower paced life. It was easy to locate a comfortable, inexpensive hotel there. We wandered the main street shopping areas and tried a variety of treats. The busy Saturday ended with snacks, drinks and conversation.
