Trust is of great importance in our daily life. It is trust that gives us courage to face difficulties and move forward bravely.
I still remember when I failed my math exam last term. I felt so upset that I wanted to give up. It was my deskmate who trusted me and encouraged me to keep working hard. She spent her free time helping me with my weak points. With her trust and support, I finally made great progress in the next test.
This experience taught me that trust is not only a light in dark times, but also a bridge that connects hearts. It can turn impossible things into possible and help us reach our goals.2026年上学期八年级英语学科期中检测 试题卷

Hi, I’m Melissa. When I first wrote this, I thought maybe I shouldn’t. I was afraid you might not like me if you knew I have Down syndrome (唐氏综合征). This condition makes some things harder for me, like learning new things. Sometimes I get sad about being different. But I’m also proud—I work hard and I’m a good friend.
My life is a lot like yours. I love reading, watching TV, and listening to music. I’m on the swim team and I sing at school. I get along with my sisters... well, except when they take my things without asking!
Some of my classes are with other kids like me, and some are with typical(正常的) kids. I challenge myself to do well. For example, my goal was to be in a typical English class by 12th grade — and I made it this year! But sometimes, being around typical kids can be hard. For example, I don’t drive, but many kids at my school do. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to drive, and that’s hard to accept.
I can’t change my condition. But I hope people can see the real me. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Just give me a chance to be your friend. I’d do the same for you.
19. What was Melissa afraid of at the very beginning
A. She couldn’t sing well at school.
B. People might not like her because of her condition.
C. She might have problems with her friends.
D. She wasn’t allowed to join the swim team.
20. Which of the following statements best describe Melissa’s life and attitude
① She lives a life completely different from other kids.
② She enjoys many hobbies just like a typical teenager.
③ She has given up trying to join classes with typical kids.
④ She sometimes finds it hard to accept things she cannot do.
A. ①② B. ②④ C. ①④ D. ③④
21. What does the underlined sentence "Don’t judge a book by its cover" mean
A. Books are more important than anything.
B. Don’t look down on people who can’t read.
C. Don’t judge people by their appearance.
D. It’s better to read the back cover of a book first.
22. What is Melissa’s main purpose in writing this story
A. To explain the science behind Down syndrome.
B. To complain about how hard her school life is.
C. To show she is a great swimmer and singer.
D. To ask people to see her for who she really is inside.
C
It was a normal day in the Caribbean. A research team was watching a group of sperm whales (抹香鲸). The whales came around a mother whale.
Suddenly, the team noticed blood in the water. "At first, I thought that something bad was about to happen," said researcher Shane Gero. But then, a small tail(尾巴) came out of a whale. He realized it was giving birth. “This is the first time we’ve found proof(证据) of helping with birth in non-primate(非灵长类的) animals,” Gero explained.
The researchers used drones (无人机) to record the whole event. The birth took 34 minutes until the baby whale was born. Right after, the whale group crowded around the baby whale. They touched the baby with their heads and lifted it onto their backs. This behavior is necessary because baby whales have less body fat and can’t use their tails yet, so they can’t stay above the water on their own and need help from other whales.
Interestingly, almost all the whales in the group were female (女性的) because young males(男性) leave their families when they’re teenagers. In sperm whale groups, strong females take the lead and they teach the younger females what they know.
The team also recorded that the whales made longer sounds during the birth, which then became shorter after the baby was born. This raises new questions for scientists: Are sounds and communication necessary for successful births in whales
23. What happened right after the baby whale was born
A. Other sperm whales came to help. B. The mother whale faced great danger.
C. The baby’s head came out first. D. Blood in the water attracted enemies.
24. Why did the other whales lift the newborn whale onto their backs
A. To play with the baby. B. To teach the baby to swim fast.
C. To help the baby stay above the water D. To give the baby some body fat
25. What do scientists want to know about sperm whales giving birth
A. How long whales make sounds. B. How whales produce sounds.
C. How long it takes them to give birth. D. What role their sounds play.
26. What is the best title for the passage
A. How to Protect Sperm Whales B. Whales Work Together
C. Blood in the Caribbean Sea D. A Baby Whale’s First Swim

Drinking warm water, doing baduanjin ... Many foreigners are trying out these Chinese habits and posting their videos on TikTok. It has become a social media trend (潮流) called “Becoming Chinese”!
In one popular video, a man pours hot water with honey while guzheng music plays. He said it’s about "resetting the body”. Another user shared her experience at a dim sum (点心) restaurant, calling it "a very Chinese time of my life".
But why are these lifestyles so attractive Chinese culture values living in peace with nature and keeping a balance between yin and yang, the Global Times said. These lifestyles can bring calm and order in a fast-changing world. As Western societies face more and more uncertainty (不确定性), people want to look for new ways of living.
“Many young people abroad hold a favorable (赞许的) view of China,” CCTV said. This shows China’s growing soft power. It means foreigners are changing their minds, from viewing Chinese culture from afar (遥远地) to taking part in it.
This trend is a “peer-to-peer cultural exchange (文化交流)”, Qu Qiang from Minzu University of China told China Daily. “Foreign netizens take up small, daily habits that we Chinese people don’t even see as ‘culture’.”
Chinese products have been important in Western life for decades (几十年), from Chinese phones and AI models to toys like Labubu. The trend is a natural result of this influence, US tech magazine Wired said.

A. Learning Chinese B. Becoming Chinese
C. Travelling to China D. Making TikTok Videos
28. Why does the writer give two examples in Paragraph 2
A. To show popular videos about food.
B. To introduce some Chinese TikTok users.
C. To suggest how to start a TikTok trend.
D. To show the “Becoming Chinese” trend.
29. According to Paragraph 3, why do some Westerners try Chinese lifestyles
A. To find peace and calm. B. To get closer to nature.
C. To change the world around them. D. To prepare for trips to China.
30. What can we infer from this new trend
A. Chinese people love sharing their culture.
B. Internet culture is changing quickly.
C. Chinese culture has a growing influence.
D. Cultural exchange only includes big issues, not daily habits.
