Each September, freshmen at Shaoxing University (USX) are invited by blue-vested students to join a long-standing volunteer tutoring program. For nearly 30 years, the program has provided free academic support to disadvantaged children, especially those with disabilities.
Launched by the university’s Youth Volunteer Association, the program aims to let students “give back to society through knowledge.” It has partnered with local public service teams and the disabled persons' federation, benefiting over 200 families and more than 700 children with nearly 1,500 volunteers contributing 27,000 service hours.
Volunteers come from various majors. Early childhood education major Wang Sihan tutors a girl with language delays, impressed by the child’s discipline and unique potential. Clinical medicine student Tian Xiangmei, selected for her patience, uses simple drawings to teach math to a cognitively challenged girl, as she understands the child’s situation as a former left-behind child. English education major Yang Xi applies classroom knowledge, making personalized flashcards and using praise to encourage her student, traveling 11 kilometers weekly for tutoring.
The program also fosters volunteers’ growth. Junior Yu Lingfei has become the program leader, with volunteers recording teaching experiences in a shared manual to help newcomers. Adapting to societal changes, the program now emphasizes mental health training. Volunteers also create a “heartfelt moments capsule” to record precious experiences, which are turned into gifts for children.
“Volunteering is mutual growth,” said Yang Yifan from USX. It allows students to step out of campus, understand society deeply, and turn their knowledge into practical help.

Knowing how to read, write and talk in one language is enough for many people. They prefer to focus their energy on other things that improve their lives. Scientists, however, continue to confirm that bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages fluently, has more benefits than many realize.
First, it’s good for a child’s brain. Learning a second language improves their academic achievements. Many studies have shown that children who learn a foreign language get better grades at school. Bilingual children also display a better facility in their native language. Their grammar, vocabulary and spelling skills are stronger than those of single-language speakers. Children who learn a second language become expert problem-solvers and creative thinkers. That’s because their brains are constantly working to sort out which language to speak and when. Studies further show that bilingual teens are better at multitasking.
Multilingual parents understand the benefits of learning more than one language. Ben Mazor of Montreal speaks English, French and Hebrew. He says, “Kids’ brains are like a sponge (海绵). They absorb everything. It comes to them so easily while they’re young. So why not give them the chance to learn another language ”
A number of studies show that bilingualism is valuable to the brain later in life. Scottish researchers did a study using data from 835 native English speakers, who took an IQ test at the age of 11. They were tested again in their 70s. Researchers then compared the tests. Those who spoke two or more languages had obviously better cognitive (认知的) abilities. Dr. Thomas Baka, co-author of the study, concluded, “Our results suggest a protective effect of bilingualism against age-related cognitive decline.”
So,who would refuse the benefits of learning a second language
28. What does the underlined word “facility” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Ability B. Interest C. Taste. D. Method.
29. According to paragraph 3, what may parents like Ben Mazor do
A. Learn foreign languages by themselves.
B. Spend more money on home schooling.
C. Involve kids in foreign language courses.
D. Help kids absorb knowledge like a sponge.

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge(粥) first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove(炉子) was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! Good morning, everyone! My name is Li Hua, the chairman of the Students Union. It’s a great honor to be here and share with you the topic--The Power of Music.
There was once a time when my academic pressure was so overwhelming that I felt that overwhelmed and discouraged. Luckily, my best friend Jim recommended his favorite song ”Happy” to me, which was like a dose of placebo to relieve me of the stress. From then on, Music became my best friend, accompanying me through thick and thin and speaking words of encouragement to the deepest part of my being. It is music that gives me happiness, brings me relief and harvests friendship. Of course, I do hope that not only does music benefit me so much, but it can also serve you as a magic to have you enchanted by its fascinating power.
Thank you for your listening!

It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect. The children said loudly, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.
