When you need to escape the winter cold, these amazing travel destinations around the world are the perfect places to warm up with sunshine!
Patagonia
While it’s winter up north, Patagonia is in full summer mode. Long days, mild weather, and open hiking trails make this the best season to see native wildlife in Torres del Paine National Park. Pumas can be easily found and sightings of red foxes are also pretty common. Whether you’re hiking among forests or watching wildlife, Patagonia is impressive in the winter months.
Antarctica
For tourists, Antarctica is only accessible from November to March. Reaching Antarctica is a Bucket List item for many travelers. Travel to the white continent is more than a simple journey. It is an expedition travel, a dividing line that separates the traveling public into tourists and adventurers. An expedition ship to Antarctica is the closest you’ll probably ever come to visiting another planet.
Bangkok
Bangkok is extremely hot most of the year, but in winter it becomes pleasantly warm and far less unbearable. From street food stands to buzzing night markets, this energetic city is best explored when the heat and wetness are manageable. It’s also the perfect jumping-off point for Thailand’s islands.
Sydney
If you’re traveling in winter, nothing beats the festive magic of Australia markets. As a fast-paced, modern city, Sydney comes alive with festivals, which bring locals and visitors together. It kicks off the season with bright colors and festive energy and there is always something to keep you excited.

Lindsay had been suffering ever since a brain injury left her with severe anxiety. Having experimented with various ways to manage anxiety, she was introduced to a yoga class by her friend. Over time, the slow movements, deep breathing and clearing of her mind made her much better. Later, Lindsay began turning to experts for further study. After gaining more experience, she opened Breathe Flow, a business offering yoga classes throughout Connecticut.
One day, Lindsay came across a woman who shared pictures of her cute pigs online. And her one post offering to bring pigs to people’s birthday parties caught Lindsay’s attention. “Pig yoga! Maybe there are some ways to mix my love of yoga and animals to help customers feel more relaxed and calm,” Lindsay thought. With that one spark of an idea, she started a whole new life journey.
Lindsay immediately reached out to the woman and arranged to use her pigs for yoga classes. After posting the first pig yoga class on a local community online group, the reaction was incredible. Not only were classes sold out for three months, but the pig yoga class drew the attention of several local news stations.
Each class was made up of 20 to 30 people with pigs. They struck animal poses. Pairing pigs with yoga was something people couldn’t get enough of, so Lindsay went full speed ahead to spread joy with pig yoga classes. The pigs seemed to enjoy the classes just as much as the customers did. For example, Lindsay would lead the class into a pose in which the learners lie on their stomach and arch their backs — and corns would be placed on their backs for the pigs to eat.
“There are many wide eyes and huge smiles when the pigs walk in. Their satisfied look encourages me to continue my task and bring animals into nontraditional spaces. Creating these memories for the local community brings me great happiness,” Lindsay says with a smile.
4. Why did Lindsay attend yoga classes at the beginning?
A. To reduce anxiety. B. To stay in shape.
C. To slow brain aging. D. To establish a business.
5. What inspired Lindsay with the idea of pig yoga?
A. The love for animals. B. A woman’s post.
C. A friend’s introduction. D. A party experience.
6. What does the underlined word “incredible” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Disappointing. B. Mixed. C. Unfavorable. D. Fantastic.
7. Which of the following best describes Lindsay?
A. Creative. B. Humorous. C. Adaptable. D. Far sighted.
C
Climate change, including extreme heat and frequent heat waves, is already known to put pressure on us in many ways — threatening ecosystems, reducing food production, and harming public health. Now, new research points to a possibly lifelong setback for children who are suffering from extreme heat.
In the first few years of life, children develop key physical, cognitive and social skills that can shape the rest of their lives. Meeting these basic developmental milestones at the early time — including recognizing letters or words and playing independently — can influence later life achievements, from mental health to economic success. “Delays in developing these skills set kids down a developmental path that can affect not just personal well-being, but society as a whole,” says Cuarta, a researcher at New York University.
To see if there are connections between extreme heat and the development of these skills, Cuarta and his team studied data from 19,600 children surveyed by UNICEF in six countries. The team used the Early Childhood Development Index, which follows milestones in four areas: reading and number-related skills (cognitive skills), social-emotional development (social skills), ways to learning (learning skills) and physical development (physical skills). The Index tested children’s ability to name letters, read simple words and recognize the numbers 1 through 10, among other skills. Researchers found that compared to children living in areas with cooler conditions, children who experienced higher temperatures above 30℃ were less likely to meet basic developmental milestones, particularly for reading and number-related skills.
Learning loss may happen because heat’s effects on the brain can produce slower reaction times and an inability to focus. Heat can mess with children’s sleep, leading to cognitive disorder and learning difficulties in early childhood. With temperature rising globally, these delays could continue through school years and beyond, widening gaps in education and opportunity.
“There is a pressing need to find out the exact ways in which heat is affecting development,” says Cuarta. “Gaining a better understanding of who is being affected and how it affects will allow us to develop adaptation strategies to help them.”
8. How does the author present the risks caused by climate change?
A. By quoting an expert. B. By raising a proposal.
C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons.
9. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The influence of painful childhood.
B. The importance of early development.
C. The science behind the heat’s damage.
D. The explanation of cognitive skills.
10. What can be inferred from Cuarta’s study?
A. Heat stress can promote kids’ sleep quality.
B. Heat’s effects were greater on mental health.
C. Temperature can determine kids’ personality.
D. Extreme heat may hold back cognitive growth.
11. What is Cuarta’s suggestion about?
A. Practical applications of the findings.
B. Need to include more subjects.
C. Possible direction of further studies.
D. Wide promotion of the findings.

Protein powders have become increasingly popular in recent years among people. Many of us take protein powders and shakes as part of a healthy, exercise-filled lifestyle, not realizing that the so-called nutrients could cause damage to our bodies.
A 2025 Consumer Reports (CR) investigation tested 23 popular protein powders and shakes and found that one serving of more than two-thirds of the products surpassed 0.5 micrograms of lead per day — the maximum amount of lead that was considered safe to take in a day.
Lead can damage the developing brain and nervous system, which makes children and elderly people easier to suffer from its side effects. And long-time intake has contributed to issues like kidney damage and high blood pressure among adults. These findings add to growing concerns that people may unknowingly take in harmful products while trying to make healthy choices.
Nutrition experts note that most people don’t actually need added protein in daily life. The recommended daily intake is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. According to this guideline, someone who weighs 140 pounds should have about 50 grams of protein per day, the same as 6 ounces of lean meat, 5 ounces of nuts, or 20 ounces of tofu. Except for some particular cases, no one needs added protein to reach their fitness goals. A diet rich in whole foods like nuts and soy products provides plenty of protein to build muscle. By keeping a well-balanced, nutritious diet, you can live healthily while avoiding the hidden harm of protein powders.
For those who do depend on protein powders to fuel body, McManus, a nutrition expert advises carefulness. “While lead is basically a part existing in our life, the concern is repeated daily use of protein powders,” he said. “If you are the one who really needs added protein, taking some protein powders when necessary rather than daily makes sense. If you are a healthy adult, whole foods are better choices.”
12. What do we know about protein powders according to CR’s tests?
A. They turn out largely ineffective.
B. They worsen weight problems.
C. They have won experts’ recognition.
D. They carry a risk of lead overload.
13. What does the author try to explain by listing data in Paragraph 4?
A. Daily diets can meet protein needs.
B. It’s hard to keep our figure.
C. Whole foods are limited on our plates.
D. Protein intake is totally useless.
14. What is McManus’s attitude to protein powders?
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Uncaring. D. Supportive.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Whole Foods: A Pioneer of Future Foods?
B. High-Protein Foods: A Lifelong Health Choice
C. Protein Powders: Health Risk Or Nutrient Legend?
D. Total Nutrition: The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need

Bill was a new student in Lakeside School. He had curly brown hair and always kept his head down when walking in the hallway. Unlike other lively classmates, Bill was very shy. He was afraid of talking to strangers and could barely speak up even when the teacher asked him a question. Every break time, he would sit alone by the window, watching others play basketball or laugh loudly together, feeling like an outsider in the new school.
One Monday morning, Bill noticed some bright blue benches installed on the playground. There was a heart-warming sign on them: “Friendship Bench - Sit here if you want a friend.” Curious, he visited the school website and learnt that the school put the bench to help lonely students make friends. He also found out how the bench worked: “When you sit on the bench, say yes to the first one who invites you to play and talk. If you see someone sitting on the bench, invite them to play and talk.”
Bill nodded silently, but he didn’t dare to try it. The thought of sitting there and waiting for others to notice him made his heart race. Days passed, and Bill still stayed alone.
One Friday afternoon, during the last break before school ended, he was hanging round on the playground, his eyes falling on the Friendship Bench. He noticed a girl who seldom talked in class sit on the bench. Almost immediately another girl went to say hi. They seemed to have a good time talking with each other. Longing for a friendship of his own, Bill finally found the courage to sit on a bench. Having butterflies in his stomach, he kept his head down and waited.

Pen the Beauty of Chinese Characters Together
Nowadays, because some students don’t pay attention to handwriting, their Chinese characters are written in an irregular and messy way, which not only affects the overall appearance of their work but also makes it difficult for others to read.
Good handwriting matters a lot. It shows our respect for culture and helps us leave a good impression. Besides, neat writing makes reading easier and brings us confidence, which is crucial for our learning and communication.
Let’s take action to practice writing carefully. Enjoy the beauty of Chinese characters and pass on our traditional culture.
【答案】(参考范文)
Just then, a boy showed up and said hi. Bill was so nervous that his hands started to tremble. He lifted his head slightly and saw a friendly-looking boy standing in front of him. The boy said, “Hi, I’m Tom. I saw you sitting here. Do you want to play basketball with me and my friends?” Bill was surprised and delighted. He thought for a moment and then nodded, saying, “Yes, I’d love to.” As they walked to the basketball court, Bill realized that this was the first time he had agreed to play with others in this new school. He felt a warmth spreading in his heart, which he had never experienced before.
From that day on, changes silently took place within Bill. He no longer kept his head down all the time when walking in the hallway. Instead, he would smile at his classmates. He also became more active in class. When the teacher asked questions, he would raise his hand bravely, which was something he had never done before. What’s more, he made more friends. They would often play together during break time and study together after school. Bill knew that it was the Friendship Bench that had given him the courage to step out of his shell. He was grateful for that special bench and the new friends he had made, who made his school life full of joy and laughter.
