In fact, water creates jobs and helps different industries to develop. At the end of the 18th century, water played a big role in the Industrial Revolution. Water powered the first machines in the clothes industry, such as Richard Arkwright’s spinning① machines. It also provided the first steam engines with steam. Thanks to rivers and oceans, businessmen could ship their goods overseas. The growing global trade created more jobs and provided more income for people. As a result, the cities that were close to water grew much larger.

结果
By 2008, over half of the world’s population lived in cities. Nearly all of these cities are on the coast or by rivers or lakes. This is because cities need water for people’s homes, industry, business, tourism② and leisure activities. Throughout history, water helped create and develop cities. It is now our duty to make sure we don’t waste water or pollute it.

What are the advantages of living in the cities near rivers, lakes or the sea?
1. Rivers and seas provide fish and other seafood, which are healthy and tasty.
2. Boats and ships can carry goods and people, making travel and trade easier.
3. Swimming, fishing, and boating are fun ways to relax and enjoy nature.

What are the disadvantages of living in the cities near rivers, lakes or the sea?
Water attracts mosquitoes and other bugs. Living near rivers or lakes means more bites or diseases like malaria.
Areas near the sea face hurricanes, tsunamis, or big waves. These can destroy buildings and put people in danger.
Water areas are often humid. This can make houses damp, cause mold, or make metal objects rust faster.

Very yellow urine means the body does not have enough water. The author includes this detail to help people easily know when they need to drink more water.
2. Why is the total amount of urine and sweat different from the amount of water we drink?
Because the urine and sweat totals add up to about 2 litres, which is the lowest amount we need. The difference is because the body also loses water through breathing and other functions.

The Importance of Water to the Human Body
Water is like fuel for the human body. Our bodies cannot work properly without water. In fact, about 60% of our body weight is water. Without enough water, people may feel tired, get headaches, or even face serious health problems.
However, many people have bad drinking habits. Some wait until they feel thirsty to drink water. Others replace water with sugary drinks like soda or juice. To stay healthy, we should develop good drinking habits. First, drink enough water every day—6-8 glasses. Second, drink small amounts of water regularly instead of waiting until you’re thirsty. Third, choose clean water instead of sweet drinks. Take a water bottle with you or set alarms. These can help you develop good habits.
In conclusion, water is important to life. Let’s value this “invisible hero (隐形英雄)” in our bodies by drinking wisely. Start today, and your body will thank you with better energy and health!
