This year I am living abroad in Germany and trying to learn as much German as possible. But one thing I didn’t realize was how many new words I would face every day.I see and hear new words everywhere:the notices in the train station;menus in restaurants;the local newspaper and of course from my German-speaking friends.New words are all around you when you are in a foreign country.
At first,a lot of German words I didn’t understand gave me a headache.I kept on looking up new words, but by the end of the day I had forgotten most of them already. It upset me.A month later,I went to a shop and bought a small notebook.I set myself the goal of writing five new words a day into my little blue notebook.Since then,in my bag,I have always carried an important thing—my little blue word notebook.
I don’t have any rules about which words I write down. Most days I write down words that I learn from my partners at work,or words that I have read.I have also learned the names of many fruits and vegetables from looking at their labels in the supermarket—a very unexpected way of learning words. And I have learned many words that I have heard on TV or on the radio. If I hear a word that I even don’t know how to spell,I write down how I think it is and look it up later.
My little blue word notebook is now like my closest friend. We are like Batman and Robin; we go everywhere together.Setting the small daily goal has made me feel much more in control of my language learning and I am already seeing an improvement.I will continue to use it for the rest of my stay in Germany and also when I return to university at home in September.

D.By selecting the hardest grammar rules.
26.Why did the writer compare her notebook to Batman and Robin
A.To show the notebook is as famous as superheroes.
B.To express her deep love and dependence on the notebook.

D.To prove that learning German is as exciting as superhero stories.
27.What is the best title for the passage

Ponds are a rich source of biodiversity, providing natural environments for many rare and endangered species, including plants, insects, birds and bats.Ponds show far greater variation than rivers and streams.Yet,for a century or so,ponds have been ignored by scientists.
Why have we overlooked such a significant part of the natural world A key reason appears to be the cognitive bias(认知偏见) where we assume that if something is small,it can’t be all that important.Rather than study ponds, biologists in the past typically headed for the largest lake or river they could find. Most of us also devalue ponds because we assume they are human-made habitats and don’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient origin.Ponds have clearly existed on Earth as long as there has been land and water and the geological record shows they have been a long-lasting presence.
Ignoring ponds within science has had a big impact on our ability to protect their wildlife. It has created a world view in which policy-makers can simply ignore the big networks of ponds that make up so much of the global water environment. In Europe, for example, the Water Framework Directive mostly excludes any bodies of water smaller than 50 hectares.
Fortunately,views are changing.Years before,the Ramsar Convention,an international agreement,introduced a resolution(决议) on small wetlands,including ponds,giving more recognition to them.And the European Union-funded PONDERFUL project is gathering data on Europe’s ponds.
However,if we want to make use of the biodiversity power that ponds offer, there remains much to do.In a world where fresh water faces big challenges, creating and protecting ponds provides a ray of hope: a piece of natural ecological engineering we can easily achieve to help support biodiversity.
28.What can be learned about ponds from paragraph 1
A.They are difficult to research.
B.They fail to get due attention.
C.They are too small to support wildlife.
D.They have greater importance than rivers.
29.What does the cognitive bias assume
A.Ponds are short-lived. B.Rivers are fully-developed.
C.Small things are unimportant. D.Natural habitats are unnoticed.
30.Why is the Water Framework Directive mentioned in paragraph 3
A.To solve a problem. B.To present a fact.
C.To prove a point. D.To make a comparison.
31.What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A.Exploring ponds has a long way to go.
B.Ecological diversity is easy to realize.
C.Fresh water supply can meet our needs.
D.Building ponds can promote economy.

It is thought that music can benefit kids’ growth.Techniques for integrating(使融入) music into math lessons range from clapping to pieces with different rhythms when learning numbers and fractions,to using math to design musical instruments.Previous research has shown that children who are better at music also do better at math. But whether teaching music to youngsters actually improves their math test scores has been less clear. To find out more,Turkish researcher Dr Ay a Akin carried out a study.
She first reviewed the results of 55 studies from around the world, involving almost 78,000 young people from kindergarteners to university students. Then she classified the types of musical intervention in education:standardized music interventions(typical music lessons,in which children sing and listen to,and compose music),instrumental musical interventions(lessons in which children learn how to play instruments, either individually or as part of a band) and music-math integrated interventions,in which music is integrated into math lessons. Finally, she compared students’ math test results before and after they took part in the interventions.
The result shows that the use of music, whether in separate lessons or as part of math classes, was connected with greater improvement in math over time.To be more specific, both subjects require abstract(抽象的) thought and quantitative reasoning. For example, geometry and music have much in common, such as the use of symmetry(对称).Arithmetic may lend itself particularly well to being taught through music because central concepts, such as fractions and ratios(比例),are also important to music.Integrated lessons are especially effective because they are more enjoyable than traditional math lessons and students can feel less nervous about math.
Dr Taylor Francis,an expert in education, said,“The study can give teachers a real insight into both math and music education. However, the study can be more thorough. It should include more factors such as students’ gender(性别),socio-economic status and the length of musical instruction in the study.”
32.What may be the topic of Dr Ay a Akin’s study
A.How music can be integrated into math education.
B.How math influences the design of musical instruments.
C.How music education can benefit children at an early stage.
D.How music influences students’ academic performance in math.
33.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The forms of major music lessons.
B.The significance of music lessons.
C.The process of Dr Ay a Akin’s study.
D.The differences of musical interventions.
34.Why are integrated lessons especially effective
A.They can ease students’ anxiety about math.
B.They can explain integrated math to students.
C.They can make abstract ideas easy to understand.
D.They can make students connect music to geometry.
35.What is Dr Taylor Francis’ attitude towards the study
A.Positive. B.Negative.
C.Objective. D.Unclear.

Tess was a precocious(早熟的) eight-year-old girl when she heard her parents talking about her little brother,Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money to cover the doctor’s bills.
Only a very costly surgery could save him now and it was looking like there was no one to loan them the money. She heard Daddy say to her tearful Mother with whispered desperation,“Only a miracle can save him now.”
Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar and poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Then she slipped out the back door with all her money and made her way 6 blocks to Rexall’s Drug Store.
She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment.Tess twisted her feet to make a noise.Nothing.She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster.
No good. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it! “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice.“I’m talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen in ages,” he said without waiting for a reply to his question.
“Well,I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone.“He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.” “I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist.“His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now.So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell miracles here, little girl.I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist answered impatiently.
