At 9:29 a.m. on May 24th, 2025, great news came from Mount Qomolangma: Chinese female
mountaineer (女性登山家 ) Sun Ning, a Henan-born artist and climber, reached the world's
highest peak from the north side. It was a time to remember and celebrate.
Sun Ning first dreamt of climbing Mount Qomolangma in her high school geography class
after seeing its picture. In 2012, during her trip, she stood with Mount Qomolangma behind her
and wrote on Weibo, "One day, I will reach the top, no matter how long it takes — five years, ten,
or even longer." That moment marked the beginning of her 13-year mountaineering journey.
In May 2019, Sun Ning made her first try, reaching the top of Mount Qomolangma from its
south. In 2021, she made her first try from its north, but she failed. In 2023, she successfully got to
the top again from the south. On May 24th, 2025, she finished the north-side climb, becoming the
first climber from Henan to get to the top of Mount Qomolangma from both the north and south
sides. With a total of three successful climbs, she set a new record in Henan's mountaineering
history.
As an artist, Sun Ning also created art on her journeys. In 2023, Sun Ning created artworks at
altitudes(海拔) of 8,000 metres and 6,200 metres while climbing. She said, "Mountains teach me
respect, and art allows me to express myself."
